WiMAX-enabled HTC Supersonic rumored to debut on Sprint at CTIA
There's hardly anything here that we didn't already know, but an unveiling date of "next week" sure catches our eye. A new report over at The Wall Street Journal confirms earlier details that were fed to us over Sprint's first-ever WiMAX smartphone, and now we're learning that the HTC Supersonic will be officially revealed to the world at CTIA next week. We've heard before that the carrier anticipates selling a 4G phone "this summer," but you can bet we'll be digging for a hard ship date and price tag when we hit the scene in Las Vegas in just five short days.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

couldn't have chose a better name
@trevr and is android giving it up for all the loyal sprint customers. i bow to those who stood next to sprint for so long, i couldn't of done it, but here's your reward.
@trevr My contract ends on the 31st of August :)
@trevr This is perfect for us Seattle-ites/Washingtonians. We lost Supersonics 2 years ago only to be replaced by the most Future proof phone in the near future.. Android=Constantly upgrading. 4G=Only getting bigger. Snapdragon=Best in Class. 4.3" HTC display... What more could You ask for?
Thank you Sprint I was honestly thinking of jumping to evil ATT for the nexus one.
@AlexSanchez
69.99 and a 2.1 hero lets me lets me enjoy it
IF they can get their fake 4G running in NYC... I might sign this.
@Dick Lynch All that stuff, but WebOS instead of Android. Just my personal preference.
@trevr "couldn't have chose a better name" Yes, love it! Updates: http://bit.ly/supersonic-phone-impressions
you mean DeadOS ?
@Jean Marc get tmobile untill then :)
arggh! Can't decide HD2 or wait for the supersonic!
@mofoj0e Wait.
@mofoj0e
Do you have wi max technology in your area ?
@mofoj0e Doesn't the HD2 have old WinMo 6.5? My advice is to wait for the Supersonic. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a device that is already outdated on release. Even if you don't live in a 4G area, you will still have the latest and greatest from HTC and Google.
@archtech
Why go with the Supersonic. Android is ported (or will be ported) to virtually all WinMo phones. With the HD2 you can choose which OS you want to run.
@mofoj0e
Neither, both networks suck.
Seriously, who is marketing these devices over there, HTC?
Ad guy: Here's what we're gonna do: Step 1: Release the best hardware ever, using the worst current OS, and do it on the current last place carrier. Step 2: Release the best hardware ever again, using the latest radio technology, install the hottest OS available, and do it on the current next-to-last place carrier. Step 3--
Manager: You're fired.
@mofoj0e
HD2 is the last great WinMo device before WP7 series come along. WP7 took everything that was great about WinMo and replaced it with everything that is terrible with Apple (and not just the recent apple, but the old apple without copy/paste).
If you really like Android, you can dual boot your HD2.
Buf if you want to spend your time waiting for one technology after another, that is your choice.
@steel don't be jealous ;)
@steel
Hmmm... Well looking at your avatar it's hard to tell if you are a little biased
@mofoj0e I know I'll get downmarked into oblivion but at the moment I'd like it if I could run WM 6.5.5 on it as it has features Android doesn't have yet. I'd probably switch back to Android by 2.5
@steel Sprint's network sucks? ... the stuff you are smoking must be great!
@steel
Well seeing as Sprint is the only 4G carrier in the US, who would you suggest they release it on?
@steel um worst carrior in what way umean top in every catagory? cause the latest cs surveys of the 4 top wireless companies has sprint in top followed closely by verizon and then at&t
it ranked 2g coverage 3g coverage cs and call quality so
@drksilenc
What latest surveys? Source? I'm interested in the results...
@mofoj0e
dell mini 5!
@mofoj0e
Now that there is a viable ROM that shares the same hardware as the HD2, you can probably boot this Android ROM onto the HD2, so if you can't wait, get the HD2 now and wait for the Supersonic's ROM to dual-boot. Plus, the HD2 looks physically more pleasing to me.
@mofoj0e
I'm getting both.
@mofoj0e HD2? you mean you really want an obsolete OS that will never see another new app developed for it?.. you're sure about that?
It would be nice to have this since I live in one of their 4G markets.
Sprint, please release this sooner rather than later.
@Ryanrkm
Agreed. Been waiting for this phone forever. Please Sprint release this ASAP!
@Ryanrkm
2010 cities:
New York, Boston, Denver, San Francisco, Houston, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Washington, D.C.
@krische
Pretty nice to be living in Denver, cell provider with Sprint and upgrade in October...
HTC Hero was my intro into Android (if you don't count my old HTC Vogue)...things just keep getting better!
@krische I find it comical that Baltimore got WiMax before Kansas City, which is the metropolitan area where Sprint's HQ is.
@ljm I have an upgrade coming in October too. So torn, HAve a Palm Pre, love the interface, but....god I saw the samsung Moment and it was pretty...
and now an Android 4G phone? *bites nails* I am hoping they have a Palm Pre 2 with 4G soon....I love WebOS
Yummy =D
an unveiling date of next week would be SUPER
@senormatt
'unveil' and release are very different... hopefully April at the latest, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was May or June
If you're a sprint user...THIS IS THE DROID YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!!
Disclaimer
4G is not available in all areas in the U.S..so don't act too surprised when you find out that 4G is only available in select Major U.S cities
@Android4Eva
To be honest, I don't even care all that much about the 4g (though it'd be wicked nice to have). I just want the damn phone. Now.
@Android4Eva its good to live in MD so ready for a 4g phone
@Android4Eva
FYI, thought you'd like to know. Clear is agressivelly rolling out their service. There was quite a delay in the end of '08 & the first 3 quarters of '09- hopefully properly testing coverage & making sure it was solid before going live. Chicago was about 6-8 months behind what was orig talked about, but now it seems they're rolling full steam & since Google & a couple other bigtime co's own a minority stake in Clear I'm sure it'll do well or I at least feel more assured. Here are two quotes from 2 sites cites talking coverage & by the end of th year will cover 80+ markets & will cover more people than I think most people realize. (120+/- mil.)
In our recent earnings call we talked about our plan to build our network to reach 120 million POPs by end of 2010. We also announced that we'll have launched commercially in most major U.S. cities by the end of the year including New York, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Kansas City and Washington, DC. The big picture is that we'll soon have a network that stretches from coast to cast and covers the major cities.
Clearwire currently covers 34 million points of presence (POP) as of last quarter. It's also commercially available in 28 different U.S. cities including Seattle, Honolulu and Maui. Network World also discussed Clearwire's plans for the duration of the year which is said to include launching CLEAR WiMAX service commercially in several more major cities by the end of the year including New York, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Kansas City and Washington, DC.
@Android4Eva
*I repeat for some uncontrollable reason.
THIS IS THE DROID WE'RE LOOKING FOR.
@Jean Marc Harford County is awesome...i hope they install wimax at the walmarts like they mentioned earlier, because im surrounded by walmarts
wimx in nyc
this is my passport out of at+t iphone hell. I dont care about 4g at the moment, its all about the large screen/android/lower fee thing for me and I am sure for others too.
@OneOfOne
HELL YES!
Price guesses? Monthlies for sprint are currently WAY below verizon/att -- do you think sprint jacks up the cost for 4G? Or data-caps the usability right out of it?
@Smkmn13
I am hoping they price this like they do with the Overdrive. My buddy has one (3G + 4G) and the monthly price is exactly the same as if it was 3G only. Please please please..... I still don't have Clear at home, but do at work.
It is great news that Sprint will actually have a high end PDA phone. I'm not a fan of android yet as it has a number of kludges including poor e-mail integration with Exchange but that doesn't mean I'm not thrilled that Sprint might actually have a high end pda phone.
I'd still love to get an HD2, but Sprint doesn't carry it.
