Microsoft takes a note from Palm in new Windows Phone 7 Series ad
We've held no punches in sharing our thoughts on Palm's recent ad campaigns, but the one spot that was actually not heinous has seemingly served as the basis for one of Microsoft's first-ever WP7S commercials. Debuting here at the tail-end of MIX, the ad spotlights Anna -- a fictitious gal we've certainly heard of before -- using her new smartphone to share photos with her dear lover Miles. It also features Luca, a kid with an undying love for playing Xbox LIVE titles, who seems to be caught somewhere in between the world of nature and nurture. At any rate, it's worth your while to give the new Microsoft commercial and the Palm ad which it has oh-so-much in common with right after the break.
Oh, and Palm -- we guess "Windows Phone 7 Series was your idea," right?
Update: Yes, that definitely looks like an HTC HD2 at the 0:43 mark, but you can rest assured WP7S won't ever come to that gem in native fashion.
[Thanks, Sean]

Does Luca live on the second floor?
SInce when has Hologram been included in Windows Mobile 7 Phones?
@Christian Martin
Huh?! Is that an HD2 he's holding at 46 seconds in the MS-vid???
@Christian Martin yeah just upstairs from you. Yes, I
think you've seen her before.
They should have an ad with a creepy woman saying "Bing Bing Bing" :)
@Edmunn It's the HUD option.
@M
It actually looks alot like the hd2.
@M No. 0:42.
* Hologram feature not available until Fall 2025. - Microsoft
I don't get it. What's so offensive about this ad?
I'm not sure whats going on with Engadget but they seem to be much jerkier towards everything lately. I really hope Engadget reels it in a bit because these nonsense articles feel very Gizmod-ish.
BTW. I own a Pre and once my contract is up I'll be glad to move to something new. Multitasking between 4 mediocre apps is not better than single tasking 2000 fantastic apps.
@M
It appears so, but it's hard to be sure, as it doesn't show the bottom, or the back.
@Christian Martin
They are just commenting on the rather obvious similarities to the Palm ad. Did you watch the ads? I think it's easy to see they both are a lot alike.
oops - my last comment was to Urkel.
@Edmunn
Gash... False advertising.
@Edmunn You know the masses are going to expect that hologram too.
@martinsikjaer
It actually looks like an HD2. why would they not show the buttoms? I think it is compatible, they just want to do a 3-buttom trend to be unique. that is my perspective of this situation.
@Duke no palm ads or weird/creepy
@Edmunn The hologram feature is one of the "delighters."
@Urkel You do NOT own a palm pre. I call BS. Nobody I know who owns one would ever consider anything else but WebOS. It's the best Phone OS out the still and will be for a while judging from what I have seen. And the Apps are now pretty darn good!
They should've worked in features that "no one uses" like C&P rather than useless characters to sell us on something that doesn't have said useless features.
@juanvaldez
Hey now, these are life maximizers you are referring to here. I am sure that if these phones have enough feature to work with their busy suburban lives, they will have enough features for you. Luckily, I am a life minimizer so I will need to look for a different phone that works with my lack of potential and motivation.
@juanvaldez
I really don't understand, the WP7S won't have real product release until end of year , and we don't know even if M$ will delay it. (delay is mother nature of m$ in history ).
Why , just wonder why there have TV Ad NOW ?
Why have Ad even not product for sale ?
Ya, maybe m$ just have to much money to burn.
Besides, it's quite easy to mock up concept video isn't it ?
@zetman
Its not a bad strategy really. This will the public ready for the release of MSP7S and caught up on its features by release. If they do start airing these commercials, its to build anticipation and to let users know its going to be the same Winmo6.5 as before. Because if they are just bombarded with commercials at launch, people will either get it or think its just another new release of Winmo6.5.xx or something and pass it off. This way, they are slowly painting a picture in the consumers mind about what this new phone is, what it can do, and what to expect.
@marcomera "lack of potential and motivation."
Lol, I know how you feel.
LOL... Luv it :)
@mrkalel /s?
@juanvaldez sorry meant I luv the Palm ad...
Take that iPad!!!
WinMo7 RRulezzzz!!!!
.
@WinRulez DON'T FEED THE TROLL!
Yeah! :P
M$ started out good with windows 7 phone with games and ui buth now it starting to show those faded colors. No multitaskig no copy n paste. I'm holding my money for that Sony playstaion phone.
@cell128
The fact you use the trolling M$ tells me you were never considering a W7 phone in the first place. Good work - you told everyone about your PS luv again...keep moving along.
Did anyone else see that HD2?
The iPadis a piece of crap compared to Microsoft Courrier.
Apple create a hardware that is truely between a smartphone and a computer, but didn't apply the same logic to the user interface which is an iPhone OS very only very few modifications.
Microsoft pushed the thinking beyond that regarding the UI, and Courrier is impressive. While it probably use the same core than Windows Phone 7 Series, its GUI has nothing to do with it !
I hope we will have a release date soon... End of 2010 ?
This commercial thing is funny :)
@smover I like how you have the authority to decide which device is best when you haven't even used either, and one hasn't even been officially announced :-/
@smover
Even though I like the Courier, this article has nothing at all to do with the Courier. So why are you bringing it up here?
@smover dude... wtf does this article have to do with anything you just said?
@smover I disagree, while Lebron James is def on pace to become one of the great all-around players of our generation, Kevin Durant is right behind him & as he leads the league in scoring as he shows he deserves to be...
wait... dammit smoover! You being off-topic is a viral infection and I just caught it! AHHH!!
@smover
Anyone else notice iPadis and Courrier? He can't even spell the product names. (I will allow the fact that the space bar wasn't used in the iPad spelling...) But really, Courier isn't a thing of the present, and iPad, doubt you have it. What reasoning skills are you using to make this decision? Also, what, praytell, does this have to do with the article, at all?
After the news that WP7 has a kind of multitasking..let it come...
So apparently Windows Phone 7 series is just for women and children? Seriously guys. What. The. Fuck. You finally have a great product, now advertise it to EVERYONE.
@AckbarsFist
Yeah, they forgot to include Eskimos and fat people and a few other groups.
@shishi Or a significant part of the population: MEN.
@AckbarsFist
Pretty sure there was a man in that happy little family.
@Abuzar1 There happened to be. The whole advert was done from the woman's standpoint though. Nothing's wrong with that, but as a first advertisement, show us the phone and how it's different, not make it a "me too" advert.
@Abuzar1
lol yeah, and I'm pretty sure he was using the phone as well.
@AckbarsFist
Microsoft is manly enough already, they now need to cater to the female and children audiences, like Apple.
@AckbarsFist Considering the Ad is titled "Meet Anna" I would assume we'll see two more ads, "Meet Luca" and "Meet Miles" showing the WP7 from their perspectives (gaming/music and business respectively) This one was the "social media" perspective
This makes sense, considering that statistically, mobile use of social media is higher with women than men.
I don't think Palm was the first to do that type of commercial, but eh, whatever.
Worth my while to give what? Might wanna finish that last sentence.
