3D invisibility cloak fashioned out of metamaterials
Those HDTV manufacturers did tell us that 3D was going to be everywhere this year, didn't they? Keeping up with the times, scientists investigating potential methods for rendering physical objects invisible to the human eye have now moved to the full three-dimensional realm. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has developed a photonic metamaterial that can make things disappear when viewed from all angles, advancing from previous light refraction methods that only worked in 2D. It sounds similar to what Berkeley researchers developed not too long ago, and just like Berkeley's findings, this is a method that's still at a very early stage of development and can only cover one micrometer-tall bumps. Theoretically unlimited, the so-called carpet cloak could eventually be expanded to "hide a house," but then who's to say we'll even be living in houses by that time?

You can live where ever you want, I for one, will be living in the invisible house.
@JeezWhiz87
So if you don't throw stones when you live in a glass house. What happens when you live in a invisible one?
@25i
You sir/madame, get the FTW comment of the day award.
@PlatinumSkeet
You throw invisible stones
@25i
We have some crazy Jehovah's near us where they order the sunday paper and chase after the person who delivers it. Must be the only kick in life they get.
@PlatinumSkeet
When you live in an invisible one, you're homeless...
@25i LMAO. I lol'ed... if only because I USED to be one of those "Jehovah's" knocking on people's doors.
Then I went to college and realized I was part of a cult. Thank goodness for education!
@Gigaflop
Meh, college just brainwashes you into another type of cult. However, with college, you get to pick your cult and they call it your "Major."
@JeezWhiz87
isn't this why commenting was turned off? stay on topic
Exactly, Vladislav, where's my damn arcology?
So how long until they figure out how to make overshields?
@Freekyfrogy And of course Plasma Grenades
@Freekyfrogy
Ahh yes, MGS4 was the best...
I can hide a house today!
i want an invisible coffee cup
@mrqs really? i want a wand, or at least a flying broomstick
"The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has developed a photonic metamaterial that can make things disappear when viewed from all angles" =D
"very early stage of development and can only cover one micrometer-tall bumps." D=
I was hoping to get an invisibility cloak this Christmas like Harry!
exciting...I love this kind of news... but I like those news about an actual product or at least a prototype better :)
Cylons, Romulans, Klingons, Minbarians, Vorlons, Goa'ulds, Replicators and Wreiths wont stand a chance :)
@DamirSecki You forgot the Covenant in that ^^
@CraniusLupus haha, true, true... forgot Ewoks, the Zerg, and the Protoss too :)
but this won't be enough to fool a prior of the Ori, you have to go out of phase to do that.
@DirtySocks85 yeah... regular invisibility cloak wont do with the priors, for them we need to ascend... and for ORI we need to ascend and apply the invisibility cloak... so except for the ascension, we are on the right path :)
Will this help me steal things?
This will make hide and seek a sinch!
@snoxie
Until Johnny brings his dads thermal camera to the game. Then I'm done for!
could you imagine the funny pranks you could pull with this stuff?
i also like how the picture says in bold the word "SCIENCE" in the corner...lo
I think that Dr. Michio Kaku called this one on SciFi Science.
@Bizam
Easy job. Call everything and something will be true.
Is invisibility supposed to look like cheese-chainmail?
I need to hide my naked body from the public. I need to be invisible. Not a pretty sight.
@Tangerinescream
If you're inside, can you see out? That's the real question.
I want an invisible cloak for the girlfriend so I can get invisible BJ's!!!
like Esthar in ff8!
Might want to mention that it can't cloak objects from the visible light spectrum yet, needs much smaller rods that may or may not be possible to make.
Take that Google Street View!
Now all I need is a broomstick
There's a KPA patrol up ahead. Better switch to cloak mode.
@tonewheelmonster
lol, I automatically read that in Prophet's voice without noticing (I play too much Crysis :P)
Movie stars will soon all be wearing "fashionable" thermal cameras so they can spot all the invisible pervs and stalkers.
Early April's Fool do you think?
I can just imagine the demo.
"Look, it's invisible!"
"I don't see anything."
"Yeah, yeah. But there's a 1-micron bump there that you can't see."
"...I can't see *anything* that's only one micron."
"Er...did you bring a magnifying glass?"
A wonderful invention for us to use against the Snape's in our lives.
Now they just need to develop a way to 1) turn it on and off, 2) make certain that they can incorporate electronic stealth tech in conjunction with it and we will have cloaking devices! That Roddenberry was a genius man! He brought us velcro, modern cell phones, automatic doors, voice activated computer interfaces, plausible means of long distance space travel, and cloaking devices.
Oh boy! Womens locker room here I come!
List of stuff to do before I die:
Get one Deathly Hallow. CHECK.
Can you say sex in public?
Sweeeet!
still gotta keep the noise down though...
german engineering at its best
Hmm I did tip you guys about this yesterday :( what gives?
Good stuff though :)
Just don't wear one when you cross the road...
Bump!!! What was that dear??? Not sure honey... Never saw a thing...
FINALLY! This will restore the balance of power in the quadrant!
