Dell Inspiron Mini 10 shipping April 1st with integrated Clear WiMAX
Dell's vanilla Atom N450-based Mini 10 just started shipping a couple of months ago, and if you'll recall, we spotted one slip through the FCC's oh-so-vulnerable database with WiMAX built-in. Today at CTIA, Clearwire spilled the news that it'll be providing the service for a 4G-infused version of the netbook come April 1st. What's interesting is that Clearwire only mentions it being for sale "through select Clear retail locations, telesales and Clear.com," so it's still unknown if it'll be offered up through the Round Rock powerhouse itself (as the Studio 17, Studio XPS 1640 and Latitude E4300, etc. are). The machine will be sold for $249.99 after an instant rebate, though no specifics were mentioned concerning a per-month data plan price. If we were the betting type, we'd say it'll probably run you 40 bones for every 30 days based on existing rates.

Just what I always wanted, an annoying contract and a low spec laptop!
The EVO is the only 4G device i'll evoh want..
hey... get it?
@samin100 Come on. U could of done better then that. But yeah, the Evo 4G is absolutely frickin awesome. Now give me a less then $60 a month plan for it and a release date ASAP and I'll buy it. Though I wish it had WebOS and a Palm logo.
I'd be tempted if the hinge placement didn't make it look ugly.
@The Madman
I completely agree, is it just me, or is dell going completely crazy incorporating these "butts" on the ends of their laptops?
Love that green.
@SmilinGoat
I have that green on my Dell. It looks even better in real life.
Dell netbooks always make me happy, with all their colors. But somehow I just buy the black ones.
@samin100 Racist.
Hmmm, just a few day's ago I was playing around in the configuration for one of these and it's like a $60 option... So... Like hell you can only get it through "select Clear locations." You can get it now.
Looks good in Neon green if you can get used to it :)
It's pretty amazing how these companies have been able to fool people into paying for internet not just at home (~$30/mo), but on their phones (~$40/mo) and now on their laptops or other mobile devices (~$40/mo).
@Hazdaz I agree, carrying all three is ridiculous.
However, I have a pay-per-minute plan as I rarely chat on my cellphone, and so am using an ultra-tiny dumbphone w/ 2week battery charge and pre-paid plan (after $100 one-time fill up costs me $25 a year or so).
My options are to consolidate the phone w/ a dataplan into a smartphone, a mini-tablet, or a netbook+data and keep my dumbphone. Consolidated phone = most portable and dumbphone+netbook most functional, and mini-tablet a compromise between the two.
Options are nice. =)
April fools... oh, wait...
Shipping April 1st, eh? Hmm.
More 'fool' you if you snap one up?
What's the point of integrated WiMAX when you've got the Supersonic with mobile hotspot!
I hope Dell continues the tradition of making the most hackintosh friendly netbooks!
I am actually typing this on my mini 10 that I got yesterday. i ordered it with the Intel WiMAX card and it came with a Clear Wireless icon on the desktop, but no mention of clear was made during the ordering process. When I opened it, the first thing I did was turn on WiMAX, and lo and behold, I was able to connect to the Clear WiMAX network - no subscription required. In fact, I TRIED to subscribe by calling Clear, but they basically told me that if I didn't buy the modem from them, it wouldn't work, and refused to sign me up. So, for the time being, until Clear gets their act together, I have FREE WiMAX! I tested it at Speedtest.net, and I got pretty consistent 6.5-7mbps down, 3-6mbps up. So far I would say I am pretty happy with my netbook - and can't wait for the 2GB memory stick i ordered to come in.
PS - For those complaining about the "ugly" hinge design, it is like that for a reason. A friend of mine had the original mini 10, and the screen was heavier than the bottom half, so when opened, it would tend to make the whole machine tip over. The new design prevents this entirely.
