JooJoo finally shipping?
Do our eyes deceive us? Can it be that JooJoo -- the CrunchPad that wasn't -- has progressed from pre-order status to shipping? Sure seems that way. Two days ahead of the revised March 25th launch date we see that the JooJoo is now taking proper orders for their Ion-based $499 Atom tablet with 12.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, in the US anyway. So, did anyone get a revised delivery status?

Slap W7 on this thing and you have a real slate PC.
@bjsguess
Except for that pesky 4GB internal drive...
@bjsguess Those fonts would be so freaking big.
@Michael Scrip
That's the great thing about a product with screws.
You open that sucker up and install a 64GB PCIe drive and it's still cheaper than an iPad with the same storage.
@Michael Scrip
Absolutely right on the OS storage space issue. Last specs I saw didn't suggest that memory cards were supported. Hopefully you could pop off the back and put in a different drive (as jon suggested) ... but that ups the cost another $100 or so.
The other big issue for me is TV out. If it can handle 1080p you should slap an HDMI port on it. Can't cost that much extra.
All in all I don't see this succeeding. With more convertible netbooks being released and Ion 2 in the works there are just better options. Especially considering that you get a real OS on those netbooks. I guess I'll still be waiting on the mythical HD touchscreen device running Windows for under $500.
@Atkins
Yeah, It'd be a real tragedy to miss out on that 90 day warranty.
What ever will I do after I've owned it for 4 months?
Also, companies besides Apple don't necessarily void your warranty for changing hardware.
@Atkins
Because there was a chance you were going to?
@bjsguess
Yeah... I don't see the JooJoo succeeding either. I mean... it's already had its fair share of problems since the beginning... the CrunchPad debacle, the pre-order PayPal mess... I really don't see this thing showing up on trucks at Best Buy or Wal-Mart.
They need to sell 60,000 of them to even get close to the $3,000,000 they've spent on the JooJoo already.
And sorry to bring up that other tablet... but I don't think Fusion Garage has the advertising budget that Apple has. Apple has already sold 200,000 iPads... and the thing isn't even out yet. I can't imagine the JooJoo sitting on a shelf next to an iPad at Best Buy.
Oh I think the JooJoo will be released, and they'll sell a couple thousand of them. Then Fusion Garage files for bankruptcy... and some other company buys their assets.
@Atkins They give a 90 day warranty because that is how long they estimate they are going to last before bankruptcy.
Probably by next month they are down to a 60 day warranty.
Now the device looks nice, but what is its actual value proposition? I don't see any of these slate devices making it big unless they can easily provide large amounts of tablet-oriented content (and experience) to the end user. And that requires an actual ecosystem already in place, and thus far only Apple has that one figured out.
Companies are putting these interesting machines, specs wise, but they expect the user to do all the building of the ecosystem for them. Who has time for that?
@Atkins
Check around, most products have a 90 day warranty.
@Michael Scrip I'm not going to put much weight into the business savvy of someone who sees 3M in development and then looks at the revenue, rather than a form of profit (manufacturing, operating, net...something, anything, I'll give you some benefit of the doubt if you choose one blindly), to recoup that.
Additionally, if they spent 3 million and then got an additional 10M less than 2 months ago...yeah, they'll be ok for quite some time, even if not turning to the black just yet. I couldn't verify anything to do with a 3M development budget, but it doesn't matter and I'll just take your word for it.
@motorolo - Actually, if they only expect to be alive for 3 months, they should offer a 3 year warantee :-P
@Atkins
All CE products in general, everything from microwaves to DVD players.
@juanvaldez
Multiple sources have reported that they initially raised $3 million.
I did not know about the recent $10 million though.
So what does that mean? Is that a lot of money for a product like this? I admit to knowing nothing about development...

@jon
Did you order one yet?
@jon
Good idea Jon, and if anything goes wrong, you can just mail your Joojoo to Chewie in Singapore.
What's the worst that could happen..?
Apple.com/ipad
@bjsguess Agree, but it'll be difficult for that to accomplish. You know? Policies... Although, we want to see this have some WP7 capability and yes, flash! Reactions: http://bit.ly/tablet-for-the-who-impressions
@Michael Scrip Ok, so I knew about having the 3 million, but having 3 million and spending 3 million are not the same thing.
@bjsguess Ugh, Atom processors are great but so sluggish running anything on top of the OS.
@pukerocket
Honestly, I'm waiting for an Arrandale ULV tablet.
Which was what I was hoping the iPad was going to be.
If these guys are still around in 6 months, and decent W7 touch screen drivers exist, then yeah, I'll probably pull the trigger. It's only $500.
@Atkins
I haven't seen anything about the Slate's warranty, and this isn't really competing with the iPad, no matter how much FG might want it to.
Like yourself, iPad people aren't going to buy this.
The people who will, aren't going to give a shit about the warranty.
@Atkins
"I think people care about the warranty especially when paying 500 and more dollars."
I know you do.
You also think that people care about picture quality when choosing a device, and you think the iPad will be more useful than something that can run Linux or Windows.
You're an Apple person, it's nothing to be ashamed of.
Just accept that you don't understand how Not-Apple people think.
@jon
First you need a PCIe slot. Good luck with that.
looks nice but id rather have a full os running in it...
It doesn't need a full OS but I still want more than this. I am personally leaning towards the Notion Ink Adam (Flash, 1080p support, hdmi out, camera and multitouch...)
M
@InternetExplorer HP is far from reputable! I speak from the experience of too many HP support issues. I also think you are inflating the features on HP's tablet as well. Besides, I prefer the larger screen of the Adam and yes a table with a camera is more useful than one without.
M
@InternetExplorer HP slate does have camera, do a quick search from a couple of days ago engadget said it themselves.. HP Slate at no more than $600? Sign me up!
@InternetExplorer Slate doesn't have (compared to notion ink adam):
-8 hours of HD video playback, 16 hours normal use, 160 hours with energy saving (backlight off) and all that with a THREE cell battery.
-Dual mode Pixel Qi screen and matte finish that doesn't make it a hell to read outside.
-SWIVEL camera (you can adjust the angle)
Tablets do need a camera imho, at least on the front. You can videocall, videochat, keep a vlog,... . With one on the back you could also do augmented reality. The idea that a camera is only used for taking pictures is so old-fashioned (yes, even on phones).
Multitouch capabilities of windows (7) are debatable: Most of the times it looks like they used some dirty hacks to get it working. Look at the unboxing of the villiv s10 or a demo where they zoom in and out on a picture in the pictureviewer to understand what I mean.
In B4 all the idiots who called this thing Vaporware show up and admit they were wrong.
Oh. Wait.
@jon Yes wait. The Courier is the hot vapourware around here.
@BergerFan
You should try that whole "understanding the comment, then replying" thing.
You know, give it a shot.
I'll wait for the ChristianChristian.
@mattlev15 haha
@InternetExplorer Ooh, hot! Some flaming going here...
@InternetExplorer Reputable company? What about the Joojoo?
@jon Yes, that is what everyone should do. Scrap their warranty.
Too bad it wont reach asian shores :(
@Driftmachine how is that? Designed in Singapore (by Jaren Goh), funded in India, manufactured in ? (Taiwan?) this thing will be in Asia very soon :)
@takemori Additionally, the "We are only accepting orders in the U.S. at the moment." made me optimistic and curious at the same time.
I'm very interested in seeing the video reviews for this and the ipad........
@jon Oops, it has a 90 days warranty? I'll never buy that.
$499 is TOO much to spend on this useless tablet.
@mtnDewFTW
You should tell that to Apple.
@InternetExplorer Well, first of all, I'm not even saying that the iPad is better than this tablet, I'm just saying this is pretty useless and does basically stuff that any phone these days can. but it's a lot bigger and heavier.
And what can this do exactly what the iPad can't? Because last time I checked it doesn't have a kick ass display and doesn't come loaded with more than 140,000 apps right out of the box, ready to download. Oh and also, can it do word processing? And actually hook up to a keyboard to type. Yeah.. get your facts straight before you start talking shit, k little boy? :)
@Atkins
It does Flash. That's how.
Wow! Yeah dude, Flash is totally worth $400.
Because all the sites totally aren't switching to HTML5 for the iPad.
Yup! Have fun with your flash :)
@mtnDewFTW
"Oh and also, can it do word processing?"
Ever heard of google docs? How about Office Web Apps?
"And actually hook up to a keyboard to type."
This thing has USB, so yeah.
"I'm just saying this is pretty useless and does basically stuff that any phone these days can. but it's a lot bigger and heavier."
Which is different than the iPad how?
"And what can this do exactly what the iPad can't?"
Run a real OS, run Flash, display HD content. Take your pick.
"Because last time I checked it doesn't have a kick ass display..."
Last time I checked the iPad still used LCD, hardly something to crow about.
"...doesn't come loaded with more than 140,000 apps right out of the box, ready to download"
So which is it, out of the box, or ready to download?
"Yeah.. get your facts straight before you start talking shit, k little boy? :)"
In this case you're just as dumb as he is.
@Atkins
"How is a browser based OS a real OS?"
It's Linux based. Also, the x86 CPU can run Windows, or even OS X if you wanted.
"And yes, an IPS screen is better." Than what? the $15 LCDs they use in netbooks. There's something to be proud of.
"Also how are you going to use your web apps when you don't have access to the net?"
If I'm not mistaken Docs has an offline mode.
If not, again Linux based, I'm sure such functionality can be added.
We've already established that Joe Consumer isn't going to buy this.
It will be sold to the same people who buy WinMo and Android.
People who know what they're doing.
@Atkins
There's plenty of Android / Windows tablets he could have bought if he really wanted the. He didn't buy and, and he ain't buying this.
Anyway, nothing's changed with the JooJoo; they're taking orders. They probably need to pay back their overdraft
@Atkins
Based on our past conversations, I know English isn't your native language, so I'll try to be a little more clear.
This is Linux with a browser shell. It's still Linux underneath, and has Linux's capabilities.
Try adding OS X functionality to iPOS. It's not going to happen.
As for the battery life, for all you know this thing is so poorly coded that battery life would improve under windows.
"IPS screen is better than many things out there, and people would appreciate it on a media device (photos, movies etc.)"
The same people who buy a $3500 LCD instead of a $2500 Plasma, sorry to break it to you, but picture quality isn't a decision modifier for most consumers.
I think most of Google's services have an offline mode.
I don't get that, why would you install Android on an Atom device?
Atom's only benefit is the ability to run x86 code. If you want Android, buy one of the ARM tablets, they'll be more powerful and have better battery life.
The Slate is absolutely more useful, but I don't want a 7" screen, 11.6" is my ideal.
As for the iPad, we'll have to agree to disagree, but as I've said, iPad people wouldn't buy this and JooJoo people wouldn't buy an iPad.
@pukerocket
I've been looking for a tablet for as long as they've been making them.
I pace while I work and holding a notebook in one hand and typing with the other is a pain.
I want an Arrandale ULV CPU; an 11-12" screen; an accurate, responsive touch panel(don't care what tech); a 1.8" or 2.5" drive(don't care what, I'll replace it with an Intel drive anyway); and 8-10 hours using wifi. I'm willing to pay around $1000 for this tablet, and I'm hopeful I'll see one this year.
