Kyocera Zio M6000 joins burgeoning Android ranks with high-res affordability
You know your mobile OS is going places when people start resurrecting their smartphone divisions just to throw out their own spin on it. Kyocera's approach with the new Zio M6000 has been to marry an 800 x 480 display to some rather middle of the road components and to sell that package at a significantly lower price point (between $169 and $216 unsubsidized) than most Android-infused communicators on the market. You know, for the people that like to have a handsome high-res phone, but don't need it to have the firepower to run Quake. It's still not a terrible slouch, coming with a 600MHz MSM7227 CPU from Qualcomm, 512MB of onboard app memory, and 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Look out for its US arrival in the second quarter of this year.

This is actually a REALLY good looking phone. Especially for that price. Dare I say... I'm almost a little excited about this thing!
Which Android version will it run? I won't settle with anything less then 2.1 ;)
@dieterk
It'll run Android 341.26.01, which should be out by June 1st.
@dieterk From their press release, it is suposed to run 1.6. Which is lame (how f*cking hard is to actually support 2.1?)
It is also supposed to be a CDMA part, so it is a pity for us with GSM carriers.
@dieterk
Here is a hands on by mobileburn on youtube,

Kyocera make some pretty nice handsets here in Japan. Really famous Japanese company actually (for those who didnt know). They are actually a famous ceramics company making ceramic parts for IC's etc.
Anyway, this looks nice and im guessing that they will be releasing an android headset in Japan soon! REALLY HOPE SO!!!!
@T in Japan Don't forget Kyocera also makes the best knives in the world (made of ceramic actually).
They are also rather big in the printer/photocopier/office appliance market. Not in the US though...
I found a source also mentioning that it will support 30fps video record and playback. This is definitely going to be a nice bargain in the books.
How much RAM will it have? I am not talking about the 512MB apps memory but RAM!
For that much $$ if it's got a solid build and maybe a capacitive screen I'd get at least 1 for my mom and GF.
Now with aggressive marketing this could be one of those phones paving the way to Android ubiquity.
Kyocera?? It's like 2004 in my mouth...and everybody's calling!
This would be free on contract with a major carrier. Damn. I just want to play my music and vids, on a high res screen and enjoy the Google App Market for as little as possible.
But this is going to a pre paid carrier. Oh well.
Screen size?
Android version?
@Johnny Rockets
rumor has it it's 3.5" and it will feature Google goggles
It's amazing how google is subsidizing an entire industry with Android. Certainly the most disruptive product I've seen in a long time.
Now if google would start selling the nexus one unlocked at cost it would be the biggest game changer ever.
@Kunta Kinte
Blatantly obvious trolling. Downranked and reported. Hopefully banned for good.
@hated one
$49, used, on contract. A new 3G is $500 unsubsidized.
Sorry, but good try.
@hated one
Including a N1? =/
It runs Android
version 1.6
Seriously...too good to be true. This phone looks hot.
Actually got to play with one of these, a really nice feeling phone. Lightweight but sturdy, brilliant screen, and responsive enough performance. Screen is fairly large; I believe Android 2.1 but can't remember for sure.
All in all, a great entry for Kyocera into the Android game. Should open up the lower-end market for consumers if the price points mentioned in the article hold true.
Hey, I used to run Quake on a 486/66. Granted it was 320x200 not 800x400.
Is it just me or does this thing look way better than a lot of phones that cost at least twice as much......
Some of the bigger companies should be taking notes
@hated one
My wife owns an iPhone and I've used it al ot. All that amazes me about it is how little it actually can do.
The screen is 3.5" 800x400 pixel capacitive touch screen.
The specs for the phone are here: http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/m6000-phone/tech-specs.htm
If they sell the phone for under $220 unsubsidised when its released and they sell one they works in the UK; i'll be buying one.
So long as the phone feels fairly fast to use, i want one!
I'm liking it!
@hated one
No it was actually a pretty miserable try and really should be deleted from this thread due to ignorance, inaccuracy and general stupidity.
Alright so I just read it ships with 1.6 and is user upgradable to 2.1
@ComeShot Woot... funny, Kyocera is late joining the Android party yet they're probably one of the first to allow users to upgrade to 2.1 rather than making users wait for an update.
@NYNY
Huh? That's what everyone is doing. When they say userupgradeable, they don't mean just go out there and download 2.1 from Google. They mean wait for us to roll it out, which is what every one else has to wait for as well.
That's a hell of a price. I'd consider something like this, but I'm embarrassed to own a product by Kyocera, lol.
Come on Engagdet, would love to see an hands on video.
If I can get this phone for $150 or so I'd be all over it. I'd put it on my pageplus prepaid wireless account. Not all of us pay for expensive monthly contract phone bills.
I wanted an Android phone for using at wi-fi spots, etc but they were too expensive.
sweetness
I really like this phone...too bad I just ordered an N1, would totally give up the snapdragon for an extra 3 Benjamins in my pocket
This looks like something Vrigin Mobile will have, no joke.
This is actually the most interesting bit of cell news I've heard in a while.
Not another $500 phone I can have for $250 if I contract an over priced data plan for 2 years...
But a seemingly usable bit of kit for something more reasonable in price.
Wonder if it has gps for maps... and how it will handle skype over the wif-fi.
