HTC HD2 launches on T-Mobile USA as Sprint EVO points, laughs
What a rough ride it's been for the US launch of the HD2. Now available on T-Mobile several months after making its European debut, it arrives less than 24 hours after the 4G Sprint EVO was announced for a summer release, and a week after we received confirmation that it won't be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 OS when devices start landing later in the year. So $199.99 plus a 2 year commitment for this Windows Mobile 6.5 device is just crazy talk. Our advice: wait a few months and snap up the glorious hardware for pennies and then install your favorite cooked ROM.

I'm still pleased for the Evo's daddy. Without the HD2 we may never have seen the win that is in the Evo.
@ChazClout
It also didnt help that T-Mo didnt advertise papa HD2 at all. Very well planned strategic timing on Sprints part.
@ChazClout
Still the HD2 is a killer phone, WinMO 6.5 is great for multitasking!
@beckhams777 Someone will eventually hack Android 2.1 on there. From there, it's a hop, skip, and a jump until the HD2 can be hacked into an EVO, sans 4G.
@ChazClout Do you think Sprint will give you a EVO for $200?
I think Android has much to offer but I need to be able to dial by my BT headset - Android still can't do this. WM still has better e-mail integration with MS Exchange. As fanatical as android fanboys are on this site, android still hasn't made as big a dent in the market as one would think and this may explain why android still hasn't gotten the incentive to fill the gaps in their OS.
However my comment doesn't mean that I think WM is all that perfect either. Even WM 6.5.5 hangs at time which then takes about 1.5 minutes to reboot on my old phone.
I'm hoping that by the time the EVO is launched on Sprint, that Android 2.3 is available and that the items I need are resolved, however WP7s will be out not that long after the EVO is released and the e-mail integrations is phenominal with WP7s. Multiple exchange accounts!!!
I still think that Evo have affected the papa HD2 sales 1 way or another.
@ChazClout
This is still a killer phone at a great price. As others have mentioned it will be a short time before Android is ported. Users will have a dual boot Android/WinMo device. And if history is any indication of the future loading W7 won't be a huge problem. I give the guys at XDA until Christmas before we see decent ports of W7.
do I think sprint will give me the evo for $200?
I sure as hell hope so. That being said,the phones components may very well cost over $200, and that's before overhead and r&d are accounted for. I am guessing $300.
what worries me is the plan pricing. I don't want to pay any more a month for 4g. Hopefully sprint does not raise the price and lets you use the phone on the everything data plan.
@MowDownJoe
I think you meant sans 4g, plus sans kickstand, sans 720p recording, sans front facing camera, sans 8mp camera and sans HDMI... what else am I missing?
@HerbieDerb went to pick up an hd2 today store had 20 and sold out and i asked and the rest of the t-mobile stores were also out so people are buying
Dear Engadget.
You just seem to LOVE windows phone 7 series. Thats ok, just bad taste but ok.
Just STOP bending reality. It does NOT market later this year. It is definitely the END of this year. That is a difference and probably a death sentence for WiMo7s.
The EVO for its part does launch later this year.
Even windows official website states: Coming Holidays 2010!
@iRACK
99% of the time "holidays" means September... That IS usually when ppl start their xmas shopping
@iRACK http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/lgs-first-windows-phone-7-handset-shipping-as-early-as-septembe/
@iRACK I am pretty sure no one is going to listen to someone who has iAnything as their name comment about a Microsoft product.
@Brent1700
I did not know that...
till it is quite late. Many new Android Phones will be out be September even.
And there will be a new iPhone as well....
But THX for correction.
@NYPunkGeek
That is a problem with posting on Engadget...
I get downranked just for may name.
I dont care I am tolerant. Just think WiMo7s is going to fail. Because it is 3 years late, limited in functionality and ugly as hell.
I do not force anyone to share my opinion. The idea of commenting a blog is to be able to share different opinions.
So if you do not listen in the first place because of my i in the Username that is immature.
@iRACK
true. msft is going to be facing steep competition but, even after the new iPhone comes out and whatever Google has planned for Android, they're still going to have time to go back and add/tweak features.
@iRACK
No, you get down ranked because your an idiot.
@iRACK It is not just that you have it as your name, but you sound like you are reading from the gospel of Jobs. It is fine to state an opinion, but stating things like "I think it will fail" and such just really sounds like trolling and not adding anything to a conversation.
@Psyg
Well well another immature baby. Welcome to your playground.
People lik you need the anonymity of the internet to bash on other people. In the real world you are probably a looser.
So and now back to topic. And sorry for getting personal.
@iRACK
Dont feed the trolls you guys. Its as simple as that.
@eminisp agreed, but i thought engadget was supposed to be getting better at eliminating trolls on their site? at least that's what i vaguely remember reading when their "revamped" site was launched. yet, there still seem to be just as many trolls as before. it would be magnificently wonderful if every sane person on engadget just agreed to downrank trolls and not feed them with pointless rebuttals. as barney frank said to that crazy person at the town hall meeting, "Trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a dining room table. I have no interest in doing it."
@iRACK
What does "3 years late" mean? Is there some time limit for releasing phones I'm unaware of? Will everyone who is EVER going to own a phone have one by a certain date and at that date the winner gets to keep their life? What are they "late" to? Are you saying if a product is released in year X, not one should bother releasing anything after an arbitrary 2 year limit and just forget about it? Do you even know what you're talking about?
@ravissimo
+1
@iRACK
and you probably think you are not a looser because hey! you've got an iPhone!
@gapechorin
Yes and Apple is superior to everything; even human Life. And i define my capabilities over a technical gadget. And you are so smart to find all that out be reading my screen name. Sarcasm over.
You are a moron!
@Tes
You are right if you understood me wrong. Obviously there is no such rule that there should not be anything new coming after one pioneered.
My "late" was regarding to the fact that MSFT did react to late on the new smartphone business. They did not act aggressive enough to maintain their market share.
MSFT is a huge company with a huge user-base in software and it seems (i certainly do not know) like they did not "read" the market the right way.
So by "late" i meant their in my opinion late reaction on this new field of smartphone platforms and being the biggest software company in the world that is a huge mistake as far as iam concerned.
Their "start from scratch" with WiMo7s does look like a desperate thing to do. If it works my opinion was wrong. All i say is that it seems somewhat late. 3 Years to late.
@Thomas Ricker
"So $199.99 plus a 2 year commitment for this Windows Mobile 6.5 device is just crazy talk."
No thanks, I'll pay cash and save $20 per month for the next 2 years.
I'm disappointed that Engadget isn't trumpeting the first major carrier to stop screwing it's customers on subsidies, every chance you get.
@iRACK
you think windows phone 7 series is ugly so it will fail BUT you also thought that holiday season starts the end of december and then I see you have a teeny i before your name, how are we supposed to take anything you tell us seriously? your definetly not an analyst... and I will have buy a windows phone 7 series just to help it not fail so I can come back and bash your face with your iPhone 4gstevejobscockedition.
@LexSky
Well who is the fanboy now.
@iRACK
someone made a comment about immature babies, i can't remember who...
@iRACK You don't get downranked for your name, you get downranked for ranting your opinions how you think that a promising OS (that doesn't even see the light of day until Sept 10) is going to fail. Then you give no reasons why you believe this is going to happen just that it is late to the scene. That is why you are downranked.
@jon I completely agree!!. Thomas Ricker almost seemed like one of those 9-year old kids teasing another kid, because he's got last years version of a shoe! ..Thomas Ricker-"nanananana-boobooboobooboo!!! i got a better phone than you doodoodoodoo!!"
@jon
agreed. the winmo bashing on here is pathetic.
might end up with android on it before the evo 4g is released
@Rodney it wont happen htc alrdy confirmed that this is a windows 6.5 device only
@drksilenc
I think he means hacked with android put on it. If the EVO ROM is leaked, and all the internals are the same, then it shouldn't be to hard to do.
@Rodney: There's hints that people over at XDA are getting close to getting Android on the HD2, though the discussion was moved to IRC because of all the 'noise'...
If Sprint's not an option, a hacked HD2 is a good choice. Besides, unless you need specific apps on your phone, the HD2 with Sense UI does a hellalot out of the box. :)
Why do i have the feeling that Engadget was waiting till a non a phone better spec'd than the HD2 came out till they could trash winmo with little consequence? How long has the hd2 been out?
@Einlander
I was thinking the same. There are plenty of people out there who are very happy with their HD2 running 6.5. I think it is worth every penny. The fact that it is wm6.5 is irrelevant - I spend 99% of my time in Sense and 3rd party apps. The other 1% where I have to get into wm6.5 it is a bit ugly but perfectly functional. Things like USB and wifi tethering out of the box makes this phone perfact for a lot of people and not 'crazy talk'. I paid the equivalent in the UK of $700 for mine and wouldn't sell it for the same even if I could, because there is no phone that can currently match it.
@thunderbollock True indeed. Honestly there is no mobile phone OS as capable as Winmo and we all know its true. It aint pretty but it gets the job done.
@Einlander Thomas Ricker is a douche along with most of the other Engadget editors. You know they have been just waiting to get their fix on some Windows hate.
@Einlander
I think that's the point. If you buy the Tmobile HD2 right now, a better spec'd version will be out in just a few months. If the HD2 had been out for awhile it would really matter as much.
@Ardentra -AGREED!
I still take the HD2 over the EVO. Personally, i think CDMA is slowly dying technology compared to its GSM/3G brother.
4G/LTE on the other hand...
@Isoprey
What no one seems to be discussing is that you'll have to take the HD2 over the EVO if you want an actual phone to use. The HD2 is available today and the EVO is an undetermined number of months from your hands. Fail.
@Isoprey
What's funny is how WiMax is only available in what 4-6 cities? Meanwhile T-Mobile's HSDPA+ is capable of 7.2 Mbps downloads while WiMax is between 4-6 Mbps downloads.
Hope they resolve the ability to install apps onto SD cards. This is holding me back from considering either the HD2 or the EVO.
@Mark Legend
the new windows market place allows for sd card installs now
@Einlander
Thanks for that - lets hope it stays that way under 7!
