It looks like AT&T will start taking delivery tomorrow of
Pre Plus units that are being specifically designated as high-security, SKU-less "practice devices" that are only to be used off the sales floor for training purposes, though when training is complete, they can be moved to a live store display. That certainly lends weight to a launch happening sooner rather than later, counter to
rumors earlier in the month that we might not see them on shelves until the peak of Summer. Of course, we don't know how long the training sessions are going to run -- our leak here gives no indication of that, nor of a retail release date -- but considering that we first saw this form factor back in January of '09, it's seriously in everyone's best interest to fast-track these. Our fingers are crossed.

i am on red alert for anything saying april 1st.
@skyblaze
but the more i think about it.. the more i really really wanna try webOS for some reason... its the only one i haven't really played with yet. will investigate further... see how i like it
@skyblaze Don't go to a Verizon store to test it; the reps will keep bothering you with a Droid in hand.
@skyblaze
i played with the Sprint Pre when it first came out (plus my friend has one) and was pretty impressed with webOS, wasn't impressed with the build quality of the phone itself though, but that's another story. it's very nice with all the animations and gestures and it was very snappy even when i had a bunch of tabs open. wasn't crazy about the platform being so closed like the iPhone but it seems like that is the way of the future now. definitely worth a test drive. i wanted to try the Verizon version but i'm so in love with my TP2 i don't feel there is even a need to look at another phone.
@weedalin extremely true, they must make more money for selling the droid than the pre or something. Plus employees are clueless about the actual device itself. They get confused demonstrating it.
YES YES YES!!!!!!!! Oh wait, it's not 2008 anymore? Nevermind...
@weedalin and the Sprint store will bother you with a Hero in hand! With mention of the EVO coming! Hey I'm on a Sprint pre, I love it!
@weedalin
In their defense, it's prob annoying to them when customers purchase the Pre and complain when they find out they can download every single app available in the time it takes to walk out to their car.
@weedalin
Just wait for Q4 or soon there after, the VZW reps will be doing the same to Android and Palm with iPhones in hand. All kidding aside, I do prefer Android over WebOS but thats a me thing, one thing is to give an opinion the other is to strong arm. If a customer feels comfortable with the Pre, fine and its not like its a bad decision.
@SoCoolCurt
Closed like the iPhone? What do you mean? Palm LOVES the homebrew community. So much that it earned a shoutout during Palm's CES presentation They are anything but closed.
@SoCoolCurt
Wait, are you saying webOS is not an open platform? That's crazy talk. You can install whatever you want on there, including homebrew apps, or even patching the built in apps! What's more open than that?
@shogunmaster Nope, 2008 is where you'll find the the iPhone UI. Oh..wait a second...
I spoke with one of the customer representative in AT&T, they said wait is only for 2 or 3 weeks from now :)
I was waiting from the day it launched on Sprint
I really want Palm to succeed.
@werty1432k Word.
@werty1432k
I really hope they do succeed, if they don't then we could loose the most unique(aside WP7S) out there. It would be a sad day should Palm goes down.
@WP7S yeah like seamless multitasking right?
@werty1432k
What they need to do is partner with HTC. If Google can make a partnership with Adobe, WebOS can appear on different hardware.
@WP7S you're right...i would never want to listen to pandora while sending a text message or web browsing or looking at my calendar for the day. something my blackberry has done for what seems like forever now these new phones with these awesome os's still can't get it right other than Palm
@theburn16 Thank you for telling that idiot what everyone else knows :)
@werty1432k oh snap! WP7S just done got told, son! I too have been put under the "My iPhone is played the f32k out, gimme WebOS" spell. I'm gonna get a Pre Plus when they come to AT&T and overclock that bitch like my Phenom II 555. Too bad I can't unlock cores too...
@WP7S And HomeBrew too? Gosh, I could have sworn Microsoft said there wouldn't be a native dev kit . . . I suppose Mozilla was just pulling a prank when they said they halted development for Fennec on WP7S.
@theburn16 Or something far more common for "casual" smartphone users. Open an app that pulls data. Now go into something else. Sinc that app was frozen, it won't have progressed loading any. THAT'S why I want multitasking.
Not to meantion it makes possible third party "core" apps. Like a messaging app, an email app, etc.
@werty1432k
same here! pls give me palm plus & +!
@weedalin Palm has a unique opportunity to turn the pre into a homebrew superdevice. It has hardware buttons, a decently powerful processor, and a great homebrew community. It may very well save palm
I'd like to be wrong about the Pre, just like 30 Rock in its first season, when despite my approval I still it expected its demise.
But i don't think i am.
@To Hell Shit, are you saying that Palm is going to start pandering and dumb itself down to cater to the lowest common denominator? I guess it worked for 30 Rock...
:-( . . . i played with it today . . . i was a little disappointed . . . still feels cheap . . . and iunno i need to play more but webos just seems so weird to me . . .
@rokorre WebOS seems weird to you? Weird as in you can do so much at the same time?
@rokorre
Weird? the most advance mobile OS currently in the market seems weird to you?
Although i do admit that Palm's weakness all alone has been their hardware and that even surprised me with their solid hardware like the Treo Pro and the previous Treos... I do hope the are given a chance at regaining their stand in the market.
@kentuckywildcats86 hey now im not trying to bash it . . . im just not used to it . . . it does use gestures im not used to yet . . .
@rokorre It only takes a little while to get used to WebOS. After that, everything ELSE will seem foreign. iPhone users like to talk about their "experience" with their phone but it just doesn't hold a candle to the experience you get navigating around a Pre. After a while the gestures become so natural you'll wonder why all phones aren't made the same.
Too late! I just bought a nexus one. Sorry palm, I hope to see you in a few years still..
WebOS is cool indeed but the Pre is just built cheap. I have one client who went through two already because the slider breaks. The phone is like a Fisher Price "My First Phone" Also the screen resolution is horrible. Hopefully Palm will release a new generation with a better build quality, bigger screen, and at least WVGA resolution. For now the Pre is FOF
Just my thoughts...
@Churma So the same EXACT screen resolution (with less pixel density) is forgivable on the iPhone but the resolution with more pixel density isn't?
There are so many things wrong with that sentiment, I don't know where to start.
@weedalin
Do you realize the Pre is not WVGA? I did not state iPhone anywhere in my comments.
@Churma This may be the first time I've seen someone complain about the resolution. I suppose you could pack more pixels in the Pre's smallish screen but I think you'd be sacrificing refresh rates over looks. 480x320 isn't bad for a screen that size. Sure, I'd like it to be a higher resolution and perhaps the next generation Pre will be. For now it's fine.
Im pissed, deciding that my iphone wasn't ideal for me (hence my user name when i had it :-)) I looked all around att and decided to down grade to a Samsung Impression. But NOW att comes out with the pre...:-(((((((
What GSM frequency do these phones run on?
Quad band GSM and dual band UMTS 850/1900 so att 3g only
There's such a thing as "tommorrow ".....
Can this version be overclocked?
@draftdubya
all pre's can be
Lookin forward to finally gettin some WebOs love.
What drives me nuts about this site is that the Top News bar is full of iPad fluff while this equally dull piece of news can't possible make the headline.
Yet, if AT&T were getting iPads tomorrow, well, it would be plastered all over Engadget like a beacon.
@Anatidae
Because this isn't news yet. When hard facts are given, then it will hit that bar up top. Right now, this is hear-say and speculation.
@BigJayDogg3 Even it is speculation about Ipad it will be big news...
but palm they think it is not a news. Lets hope Palm get nice success out of this move to AT&T
I hope they take it as seriously as it deserves which is VERY. Sounded like the training push at Verizon was low which contributed to slower sales.
The device is spectacular and really should be selling like gang busters.
Maybe now Luke Wilson will actually have a decent phone for his commercials.
Well you can probably bet that they won't be testing the WiFi Hotspot tethering option since they still failed to bring tethering to the iPhone.
Web OS is great, the PRE hardware is questionable at best. I wish palm the best of luck but the story here should be how other carriers are offering the phone on much cheaper monthly rates. AT&T is almost double the monthly cost of Sprint for the same (similar) devices. Sprint's PRE is more limited than the "plus's" that are out there but would you really pay twice as much per year for an extra 8gb of storage space? News would be AT&T rolling out some new bundled voice, text and data rates. In my area AT&T's service is spotty, VZW is pretty good and Sprint is close behind them.. It's a no brainer. Sorry big blue I think you jumped on this bandwagon after it rode into the sunset.
