I just toured the 'best' of the iphone apps and honestly half of them are apps that emulate what you can do in the browser with a changed interface. The other half of the apps are games that are probably decent but can't compare with the gaming experience on the DS(i).
The big secret is that "apps" really mean "games and a ton of web browsers that only work on a single website". :(
But take a look at the engadget app. It is 100% optimized for a 3.5" touchscreen device. It loads wayyy quicker than the full webpage, there is no scrolling from side to side to see text, etc.
Your telcos sucked. You could buy those 3$ a month apps for unlimited use for.... 3$.
There is no real competition for telcos in the states as each telco has different phones and system. The consumer can swap only every 2 years when their contract ends.
In 2-4 years when LTE might become the standard things might change, when you can swap service provoder without having to buy new phone. But Im guessing the telcos will fight tooth and nail, and try to fragent the market to suit the big players.
@New Reformation This is no hate. The 'best' rated apps there are not necessarily the best apps. Also you are missing something - there will be apps developed for the ipad, which will greatly surpass the current ones (just check iwork).
@New Reformation Well, maybe I don't want to keep accessing the web in order to use these features? Or spend an hour looking for a "web app" that does what I want it to do?
Besides, I don't agree with some of those "Staff Picks", "Highest Grossed", etc sections. Some of the best apps aren't even featured there. I use the "Also Bought" apps feature a lot.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Yes let us all bask in the glory of a jumbo iPhone that we're gonna have to pay extra for OS 5 and 6 when it comes out
@incognito53
People love paying for products that have less features
@r34p3r
EXACTLY!! Sell a product with less features and call it "user-friendly"
.. and double the screen size so you can double the app cost
@crawdad689
Jeez. Simmer down there, man.

@incognito53 People paying for a new OS?
Oh no! Sound the alarm.
@New Reformation
You're somewhat right.

Oh yeah, it's also free! :-)
@incognito53
Remember the days when you had to pay $3 a month subscription to play Tetris on your cell phone? Or $5 for a ring tone.
Guess you conveniently forgot about those days
@suicidebob -- "Remember the days when you had to pay $3 a month subscription to play Tetris on your cell phone? Or $5 for a ring tone."
Exactly. I love it when people slam the Apple App Store and say "we've had apps on cell phones for years"
Those apps sucked. Just for fun, I used to browse the "selection" of games and apps for my old flip-phone.
I repeat... they sucked.
@suicidebob
No? Possibly because I never had to even going back to 2004.

@incognito53 iPod touch has done that for years.
Why the heck was I downranked? I realize that there are some really cool/innovative apps, but the majority of them are as I described. Why the hate?

@jeff181995
Especially when people on other platforms don't? Yes, that's reason to sound the alarm.
