Intel putting some ultra-thin laptop CPUs on hold to gauge demand?
Rumors of Intel delaying processors to avoid stepping on some of its other processors' toes? Stop us if you've heard this one before. This latest instance concerns some unspecified ultra-thin laptop CPUs that Intel has reportedly now put on hold until the third quarter of the year and, according to DigiTimes, a launch then will still depend on what demand looks like at that point. All of this is supposedly at least due in part to Acer's decision to shelve some of its ultra-thin laptops that would have used the processors, and instead focus on thin-and-light Calpella-based laptops. No word from Intel, of course, but past history suggests we could see some further back and forth before things finally shake out.

Meh.
Stop, already herd this one gods knows how many times!
Just let them out in the wild Intel!
......please?
asus, acer, toshiba, whoever out there, make more super skinny laptop at affordable prices already! if you cant make one, copy LG's x300 or sony X505 (that was 8 years ago)!
NOOO...I want Arrandale ULVs.
it doesnt matter the macboook air is THE thinnest laptop already so microsoft can keep their processors
@kakashi6992
Blah blah blah Apple blah blah
Seriously...who cares ?
PS: You do know Apple uses intel now too, or are you still stuck in the 90s ?
Microsoft makes processors?!

@kakashi6992 You Apple fans are so stupid. The Dell Adamo is the thinnest laptop at half the thickness of the Air. Also There are much lighter laptops from Dell, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba. Like I say Aluminum is for soda cans. Carbon fiber and magnesium alloy is for high end machines.
@Professor Hubert J Farnsworth Yes. Word Processors, to be exact.
I hope this isn't the i3 series laptops. We recently switched to Lenovo and decided to standardize on thier T510i Laptops, only to have our order cancelled. Can anyone confirm if this is the i3 Chips?
@vanhanz There are no i3 ulv's. These are:
Core i5: 520UM, 540UM
Core i7: 620UM, 640UM, 660UM
There should be plenty of demand I'd imagine. Netbook makers have expressed desires to migrate to 11.6 from 10", alienware will have to refresh the m11x, and the air and its counterparts (adamo etc.) will need updates as well.
My beautiful Asus UL30JT :(
Maybe I'll just get a UL30Vt-A1 after all.
Ok cool. So let's go ahead and complete that switch to ARM.
@Jacob Varghese
Like the two can even be compared, Intel mobile CPUs are ALOT more powerful than ARM for now at least.
I hope this isn't true! I want my Acer Timelinex series to come out already!
Aww! I'm torn between the battery life of CULV (especially Asus UL80Vt with switching gfx) and the fact that Core2 has retired and its Corei time now! I was hoping that a Corei ULV processor would come out by my deadline to buy a laptop, but all those dreams are washed away. Sigh. I guess I can always get something relevant next time (in 2-3 years :( ).
You know, if Intel advertised these CPUs as much as they are pushing the Core iX series, maybe there would be more demand. These are impressive little processors, and are as interesting tho the average joes as the i5/i3. One will most likely power my next notebook.
Specifically, that m11x is VERY tempting (~6-7 hours of battery!). Now just waiting for the kinks to work out.
Just means less competition for my tech budget. Might get that iPad after all. There's always next year for the UL30JT.
Intel has succeeded in getting me to NOT buy a new laptop. I'll just save some money and get by with a used ultra-light off of ebay to hold me over a couple of years.
Why would I knowingly by a new laptop with an older generation chip after the upgraded models have been announced but are being held up so that Intel can clear old inventory? I'm not going to reward intel for restricting my access to announced upgrades.
Automakes don't withhold new models- they just discount the old ones. Either give me a serious discount on a new UL30vt, let me buy the new model... or sit on your inventory... Either way I'm not paying full price for your older generation just because you want me to.
I hope it is something much faster but similar in size to their current pine nuts processor!
