First 3G iPad sighted in the wild, Steve Wozniak plays it cool by riding a Segway (video)
Loyal reader Parth Dhebar is keeping us updated on happenings in the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store this morning, and earlier laptop signings from the Woz have escalated into an impromptu Segway demo courtesy of the eccentric Apple Inc founder. Where he got the personal transporter from, we don't know, why he's riding it around and doing his best Paul Blart impersonation is not important, what matters is that we've got video of Steve Wozniak on a Segway and it's right after the break. We're also told an iPad has emerged out of the ether for the Woz-man and his fellow early bird queuers to have a tantalizing play around with -- presumably thanks to Apple Store employees treating their patriarch like they should. The perks of being in the right place at the right time, eh?
[Thanks, Parth]
Update: That's a 3G iPad old Steve is playing around with! Look at the plastic up top. We'll do our usual digging to try and find out how that wily superhero managed to get his mitts on a device that's a good few weeks away from release.
Update 2: We've got video of the 3G iPad running Netflix. An Apple engineer apparently walked through the queue with it, it didn't come out of Steve's magical trenchcoat pocket.
Update 3: Interested in seeing Woz grab his iPad, sign a few hundred others, and then ride off into the sunset on his Segway? Gallery's just below.

@Darkroom The Segway is just ahead of its time. In the near future it will transport every obese American down to KFC, Wendy's, MacDonald, Burger King, plus every other grease serving food chain.
@Andr why just americans,just curious....rest of the developed world is skinny i guess
Isn't that a 3G version?
@Bolo
ya it is
@Bolo looks like it
@palindrome Isn't this supposed to be out "later this month"?
@Bolo
Woz is Apple's secret agent. The guy and his actions serve no other purpose than to be Job's long-lost opposite personality.
@Bolo Yes it is. No shocker. He founded the company and his (ex?) best friend is the CEO. I would be shocked if he didn't have one. This would be like being surprised to hear that Bill Gates has beta access to Windows 8 or something.
@Chroma hmm. When Woz showed up at the line there were 4 people in line. What are the chances that an hour later, after the event made the evening news, that the line grew by several hundred rabid Apple fans?
They weren't there to buy an iPad, they were there to shake hands with their (hero (well not just Apple fans; anybody who isn't a big fan of the Woz should turn in their nerd badge).
And of course, once they saw that he was so keen to buy one (of course he probably already had a dozen at his house), of course they lined up to buy too.
Great publicity stunt.
@Bolo You have to understand. Apple wants to sell as many WiFi versions to the fans, then they will realize how much better their iPad would be with 3G, so they buy another one!
Of course, Apple will add in the obvious missing features (well, the ones that don't threaten their iTunes sales) for another release in the not-to-distant future making yet another sale from early adopters.
The majority of the people will "wait and see"
Haha, gotta love the Woz!
Hey, how did he get a 3G iPad? I guess it's good to have old connections. I sure hope the the iPad revolutionizes print more than the Segway revolutionized transportation.
@MosesusedaniPad
he was called on it and just said "that's interesting" and played coy
@MosesusedaniPad
LOL epic realization -- the iPad is the next Segway...it's bound to phail imho.
Looks like a copulation ritual to me :-/
Hey he seems to have the 3G Version!!!!!
What the...
Why is he wearing a curtain ring as a necklace?
@palindrome
Del Griffifth, Shower Curtain Ring Salesman.
@Maeztro Those aren't two pillows!
Poor guy. Even being a founder isn't good enough to get unit weeks ago.
@PhaseDMA Dude, he's holding a 3G version. You really think he had to wait? He's probably got every single version plus the next gen. The guy still gets a paycheck from Apple. I'm sure he just happened to be in NYC.
@commonman He isn't in NY much less NYC.
chunky watch for a chunky man XD
@Scouse Pricey Yah I was wondering what watch the was, huge face on it.
@Argonaut It's his nixitube watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4R3hODnTGo&feature=player_embedded
@Argonaut I thought it was some sort of dimension warping device
Where are the thousands of people? The hype of this thing has dominated the blogs so there must be thousands of people in line. Where are they? Don't tell me all of this hype was falsely generated.
@sweet greggo
No. Actually, most of them pre-ordered. Staying in line is just for fun and publicity.
@sweet greggo Ehm, yeah. Because if you wan't somethings you have to stand in line in the morning before release, right? It's not like we something that enables us to order things from distance and perhaps even communicate with each other. And the world will probably end in an hour so if you haven't bought if before that you never will, right? Jeez..
@sweet greggo There isn't lines because the hasn't really been a commercial push. The iphone had tons of ads on tv, the ipad so far as I can tell hasn't really. I think Apple may be waiting till they have enough cool apps for it to really make a case for the thing. Don't be surprised if some sort of iphone+ipad deal comes along when the new iphone comes out either. Think a 3G combo plan for $45 a month or something along those lines. Especially if iphones hit Verizon later in the year. I'll likely wait a little while and see if by the summer we know anymore about the microsoft courier. The ipad is cool, but it feels like touch interface 1.0 done well. I think palm webos added a 1.1 with gestures outside the screen. Maybe MS will take it to 2.0 will some really innovative handwriting stuff. That or the thing is still 2 years away and will have little chance against iphone OS 5.0 and a newly refreshed and cheaper ipad.
@nickyP You maybe right, but I honestly don't remember a big iPhone presence on television before launch either.
I know a lot of people pre ordered this but I think the lack of people at the store says volumes.
@nickyP
congrats on thinking rational, everyone on these blogs is either one of the following:
OMG! I NEEEEED NOW!
or
OMG! THAT SUCKS!
glad to know that there are still some smart people in the wild
@sweet greggo
You realize this is nothing like the iPhone launch...in that you couldn't preorder iPhones?
They missed the perfect opportunity to Joust!
lamest thing i've ever seen...
@stueck
NUH UH YOU'RE THE LAMEST THING IVE EVER SEEN
I don't think it is, doesn't the 3G have a white plastic back instead ?
@xenon73
No, go to
http://www.apple.com/ipad/gallery/
Why would you get a 3g version. Couldnt you just use your phone as a 3g hotspot for free?
@Damonmt
Not until you jailbreak it.
@Damonmt Not if you have an iPhone. Without jailbreaking, you can't tether the iPhone to another computer, or transmit a wifi signal.
@Dreamwriter
What about with another phone that allows this. Wouldn't that be a whole lot cheaper. Or would it be the ipad that would block it?
@Rockchan There are people that haven't jailbroken their iPhones :-O
He got it early alright...a month early! That's the 3G version!
Apple's official court jester.
He's got connections no doubt. He's also had a Segway for a good many years. In fact he's got several, and is active in the Segwy Polo League. Interesting guy.
@zzzzz What god?
Ohhhh, so cute. I mean the man holding an iPad. Not the iPad.
Nice.
Looking at the aspect ratio on the camera it seems to be a Droid or Droid eris...irony....Never knew segways were so fast...
Well it's S, jobs mistake, he should sent 1 or 2 to the woz like 1 week ago. (with reset of these bloggers who have an iPad now to review it)
