Netflix coming to the iPhone and iPod touch
This one needs very little explication indeed. Netflix has just officially confirmed that its currently iPad-only app will be trickling down to the smaller iPhone OS devices. It's all very teasing and noncommittal as far as the timeframe goes, but who's not excited about getting the "dessert" to the iPad's main course?

A great streaming app... only slightly sullied by having to go through AT&T.
@rand0
"No person in their right mind would ever try and stream an entire movie via a phone carrier unless they're a ritard."
Good job.
The only area I find the iPhone lacking is in general reception. Hopefully, some years on it will be at a point where we can conveniently stream movies and such on the network. Looks like iPad development is spurring on iPhone development and vice versa, which is good to see.
@rand0 Why not? The iPlayer works great on my Android phone... Perfectly watchable over 3G.I maybe wouldn't want to watch a whole film, and I doubt the battery would last, but certainly something like a 20-30 minute episode of something.
@r34p3r uhhhh I have watches full length movies on YouTube streaming over 3G just fine....no stuttering or quality issues at all
This makes me super excited. Can't freaking wait to Instant Watch on my iPhone!
@ColinMansfield
Good God, one less notch on the Windows Phone 7 belt. Well, there's always Xbox Live, I guess.
@Peter Church very true. imho the main thing going for Windows Phone 7 is that they took "series" out of their name.
Gonna have to restart my membership.
@Nvtwist I was thinking the same thing.
@Nvtwist Same here
@Nvtwist Exactly why they should be doing this. I know a lot of iPhone users will sign up for Netflix just because of this
I wonder why Netflix didn't make an iPhone app earlier and my main conclusion is that Apple wasn't going to reject it until they were in a position of need with the iPad. But maybe I'm just an iHater, then again, I wanted this for my iPhone for years, so I'm probably more of a iGrudger.
@juanvaldez
you dont have an iphone
@juanvaldez if you claim to be an iHater, time for you to start using the exclude page buddy... =)
@juanvaldez .. Please. Apple doesn't need Netflix when they would be quite happy just to sell people content from their own store.
My guess is that it is a transcoding issue. They are probably pushing the same 720p stream they use for the web to the iPad. For the iPhone however they would need to use a lower resolution as it would probably drain the battery life of the weaker CPU in the 3G (not 3GS).
Of course real time transcoding or transcoding all their back catalogue are both involved projects.
@TheLondonExchange 1st Gen iPhone, used as an iPod touch these days.
Niiice!!! ... Queue the "What about EVO 4G???" comments ... NOW!!!
@Tuan X I agree, although of like to see an android 2.x apparently also in the works. I think if windows phone 7 is no longer exclusively getting the app, and iPhone OS is getting it, then why not make an android app? I understand coding for android is difficult, but if they stick with 2.x they should have an easier time. Plus its ANOTHER reason why google should fix android fragmentation. I think this iPhone/iPad news us good for everyone, atleast there's hope now.
It'll probably coincide with the next iPhone release.
@Tuan X
That would be pretty nice. I have an upgrade coming up on May 10th, just in time to pick up the new iPhone. (I still have my 8GB 3G from my contract over a year ago) Hopefully by then we will learn more about OS 4.0 from Apple and see how this will be integrated with that OS.
Hopefully this will encourage Netflix to get better movies to the instant watch list.
@pickleJar
That is the ultimate goal we wish to see achieved. However to be fair to Netflix, their recent selections *have* gotten better over the last few years. At the very least they are getting a lot more new releases, thanks to the Starz!Play service.
@r34p3r
Agreed... they are much better then they were a few months ago in fact. Boosting it up has been Xbox 360, PS3 and now the Wii.
BTW.. love the avatar!!! Fav. band of all time.
perfect excuse to get netflix wowzers!!?!
This is long overdue. I'd never use this over 3G though...just wifi.
But still not the UK, right? :(
Looks like I won't be putting my account on hiatus this summer.
Awesome!
I hope we don't need to upgrade to 3.2. I don't want to give up my jailbreak. I'll just wait for 3.2 jb
I hope it happens like tomorrow!
iPhoners weren't bandwidth hogs enough yet?
Hopefully an android client is coming soon.
HURRY UP !!
So I may stock with my iPhone after all....only time will tell tho....WinPho7 is still looking awfully good to me...
Please let it have closed captions!!!!
I agree with the "apple was crass" theory on why netflix wasn't on iphone sooner and I am typing this criticism on one. Buying apple gear doesn't mean you have to buy onto the cult momsense.
Netflix make much more sense for a device that is garanteed to be with you when you are bored and have nothing to do because you still have to carry a phone or pager.
Well just about positive this is meant for WiFi, especially how bad AT&T's coverage sux, seeing how almost everything in my house with an internet connection supports Netflix, I'll stick with my Android device and wait
Looks like I won't be renewing my membership until Netflix streams to Android.
Can has android now plz?
Jcreazy you are refusing to watch movies on your tv until netflix makes an android version? Makes no sense.... It seems a bit shortsighted to cancel your subscription just because another phone gets netflix:... For my part, I will be joining netflix because the added value of watching it on my iPhone finally put it over the edge.
@tosvus
Seems someone is jealous his phone is not getting this first.
My droid just died a little inside. He's pouting.
Great just bring it now whats the hold up!
Why not release this first on the iphone and ipodd touch than the ipad
there are more iphone users anyway.
@buri0819 I think the studios would shit their pants if suddenly the iPhone just got instant streaming out of the blue. They're probably upset about the iPad getting it on day one, and I wouldn't be surprised if they use mobile instant streaming as an excuse to not license content to Netflix. Unfortunately for the movie industry, this is pretty much the future. Don't like it? Invest in a few game studios then, since they're the only form of media that won't be railroaded thanks to them being a natively digital experience.
So pretty much ever object in my home can do(or soon will do) Netflix and psp has still never been mentioned, even in rumor? So sad :(
WHERE... IS... THE... ANDROID... VERSION?
Google would of instantly approves if Netflix would of made one for the Android and not having to go through loops. Me want's goods on me 3.7" screen. I've never watch movie for too long on my previous iPhone 3g due to it's small what am I looking at screen.
@cdf74dc9
Dude there's not that big a difference between a 3.7 inch screen and a 3.5 inch screen on the iphone.
I AM SO EXCITED. All caps were intended. :p
"very teasing" is a great way to describe this news...

I wonder if there will be a Dock that will allow output to a TV for this. we stream already on the Wii and having a dock in the Bedroom would be nice as we already have an iPod Touch. I'm not worried about HD quality video. (obvious with the Wii)
Awesome can't wait
