Apple sells over 300,000 iPad tablets on US launch day
We heard some pretty ridiculous estimates over the weekend, but these figures are straight out of Cupertino's mouth: over 300,000 iPads were sold on April 3rd. Specifically, that many were moved in the US as of midnight (PT, we're assuming) on Saturday, though this does include deliveries of pre-ordered units to customers, deliveries to channel partners (such as Best Buy) and sales at Apple Retail Stores. We should point out, though, that just because Best Buy purchased a bundle of 'em doesn't mean that end users have (yet), but still, this is a pretty impressive feat for something that not everyone was convinced that they "needed" in January. If you'll recall, Apple only sold 270,000 iPhones during its first 30 hours on the market, yet it moved over a million iPhone 3GS units during that handset's opening weekend. In related news, iPad users also downloaded over a million apps and over 250,000 ebooks from the iBookstore during launch day, with Steve Jobs himself noting that "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad." Now, let's see if these guys can keep pace through the first full week.

@jeff stamos
And some guys that aimed to profit reselling them.
In fact if you check ebay about 1% of all ipads sold are on sale now. And probably another 1% has been sold already.
Unfortunately for them it isnt selling well... the price they are getting is about same you pay with sales tax. There will probably be many ipads going cheaply in ebay in a day or 2, well by the friday latest.
@newone Odd, I can't see who you're replying to. *scratches head*
The real question is, were more iPads sold than other "must-have" marketing successes like Cabbage Patch dolls, Tamagotchi virtual pets, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmos, etc.
You just HAVE to have one, but you don't know why. =p
I LIKE!!! *borat voice*
@TruUnknowN
LoL!
That was 2 illustration changes ago!
@TruUnknowN I am hoping they end up fairly distanced from the iPhone counter parts. RTS/Board Games would be so fun on that screen. If this is the case id pay anywhere from free - $30.00 possibly more if the experiences were exceptionally better than similar on iphone.
Anyway here are the best ipad apps today: http://bit.ly/best-apps-for-the-ipad-opinions
@Peter Church
Considering the broohaa and media coverage it's pretty disappointing.
These are some pretty good numbers. Even for the developers.
Whatever happened to Jobs' opinion that people don't read books anymore.
@Proud Japanese
He ALWAYS says that before he puts said functionality in his devices.
See: http://www.engadget.com/2004/04/29/steve-jobs-says-it-again-no-video-ipod/
@SolidSnake
And that was 5 days before he released the iPod Video.
@Proud Japanese Well, that opinion came from where most of his opinions and remarks about things his company does not sell or participate in, come from: the anus.
That is interesting. Were they having some production problems that I didn't see? If they are including the ones that they sold to Best Buy I would have figured that the number would have been higher. I didn't see any stories of them being short on them anywhere, everyone I know that ordered or went to go buy one on release day got it.
@admlshake not at all. This was a fairly major holiday weekend and most of the stores were closed on Sunday. so 300k is pretty good for sales. now what will be interesting is how well the sales continue and if it hits 1 million before the 3g release date is announced. Plus what that opening sales is like. could be that a lot of folks are waiting for that set.
@Peter Church
"though this does include deliveries of pre-ordered units to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores. "
So they are counting ALL of the ones they sold from the past month + the ones (shipped), which I recall is used by you guys to denote unsold and not really in people's hands.
So after days and weeks of hype from EVERY media outlet, how many did the press actually sell?
@LAY
So a device that no one needed, according to the Apple Haters, sells 300,000 in the first day, which is more than the original iPhone, more than the original iPod (Apple only sold 300,000 iPods in the first YEAR), more than the Droid (which was marketed more heavily), more than the Nexus One, more than the Xbox 360, more than the PS3, more than any other gadget released in five years, except for maybe the Wii and the iPhone 3G and 3GS (which both had worldwide releases at half the price), and the Haters still say it's "disappointing."
Okay.
The funnier thing is that the Haters are setting themselves up to be mocked in the future. Why? Because you guys just set the bar for what you consider a "failure." You guys just gave us the ammunition to diss any gadget in the future that doesn't sell more than 300,000. That includes the HP Slate, Courier (coming 2012) or any Windows Phone or Android device. Thanks, guys.
@Peter Church
"Because you guys just set the bar for what you consider a 'failure.'"
Not really, since no other device will get the same media hype as this one. I think if the HP Slate sold 200,000 in the same time frame it would be a success because the HP Slate will not be on the cover of USA Today or whatever and won't get 3,000 articles per hour from Engadget and Gizmodo. HP will have to pay for its advertisements.
@sonicyoof
Well said. The media predicting the success of an Apple product is almost self fulfilling.
@LAY
Honestly do you just sit on engadget and troll Apple related threads? Dude, get a life.
@JamesR
Apple have a better marketing department than HP. If HP had as competent a marketing department they would have as many articles, and a company is only as good as it's weakest department. So, i am with @Peter Church, the bar has been set.
@Mtmrob Just like your spelling.
What you think the chances of going into a store today to get one is?
@schmidt1985 I heard on the radio this morning that you can pretty much go to the store and buy one. They haven't been sold out.
@zakany
I told my self i wouldn't get one either the "magic" made me drunk reading about it all weekend.
@schmidt1985 Talked to a guy who stood in line Saturday to get one in NY, he mentioned the line wasn't bad and it took 7 mins from doors to open to walk out with the device, looks like they had more than enough to go around then, pretty sure you can grab one right now if you wanted to
@z0phi3l
I will be going on lunch have to sit and wait for the next 6 hours this could be tough.
ahh, but the thing is, iphones had a purpose when they were brought out, so they had a pretty steady pace, but this ipad.. no purpose. It only did that good because thats all the people who are going to buy it.
Now whats left are those who decide to change their minds after a jailbreak comes out, and those who do change their minds will be one of the last people who buy the ipad. It wont sell anymore unless the newer version comes out, which im pretty sure will be released earlier because this thing, again, has no purpose, and jobs knows that, thats why he left out some essential features, to only slowly keep adding them.
@uHorndog no purpose?! lol I wonder how many netbooks sold that many on launch day?! haha man, I bet total world sales of netbooks is only a tad higher than this.
The best is yet to come! The thing about the iPad is that the device really doesn't matter, its the content, and from what I have seen, developers who develop for any Apple device are 300,000 times better than on any other device.
These devices are not about chasing spec sheets, they are about experiences, something Apple has mastered and other manufacture have been struggling to understand for the last two decades.
I predict take up will increase across the devices as more people get to play with their friends devices.
@Stepup
Well said, well said.
@Stepup Roughly 33 Million netbooks were sold in 2009, or roughly 100,000 per day, every day.
@Stepup
"I bet total world sales of netbooks is only a tad higher than this."
And exactly how much would you bet on that? (I accept credit cards)
I wonder what the 3G iPad launch numbers will look like?
@jin and guice +130 bucks, +30 bucks a month for a device that AT&T isn't expecting big numbers on? Not meeting Wall Street estimates for the wifi version...it doesn't look big, but I do think hardcore believers (pre-orders included) wouldn't mind leaning in the 3G direction.
@juanvaldez I wouldn't put in the +30 since the 3g is optional and can be turned on and off as much as folks want since there's not contract. Those factors may make some folks get the 3g that wouldn't have otherwise.
@Charlik Well, there isn't much a point in getting it if you aren't going to use it with maybe a few exceptions: 1 - you want it for long trips, (vacations etc.) 2 - you have irregular consumption (such as multiple abodes/summers off/etc) 3 maybe others
I see the lack of a contract as something that Apple knew would keep their adoption down without a subsidy. People who want 1st Gen, if they enjoy their experience, might have an annual upgrade cycle which would mean you don't want them locked into a 2 year contract. It was just a good PR move in some ways. I still see 3G buyers using 4+ months of 3G unless they just find they don't use it enough to justify the price & @4 months we'd be adding $10/month on average.
I'm not an apple fan. But here comes the change, whether I like it or not.
@Oskiee
At least you can admit it lol
@Oskiee
Amen to that. I'm kind of relieved at that figure, ad it shows that there is some form of market for tablets. We might see some other models, and some positive changes for iPad 2.0.
@grandmainger Yes, I also like a market for tablets as I'm not against the product class. Also, the better iPad 2.0 is, the better the competition will have to be. That is good for people who are interested in this niche.
@Oskiee
Wait until later this week. It's been reported that Apple will now start its massive advertising blitz ($500million of ad dollars some say) on "pushing" the iPad into our heads. Change by sheer cash I say.
Impressive.
@Peter Church Actually, if the Apple Haters are wrong remains to be seen. Nobody said that Apple Fanbois wouldn't buy it. They said that regular people wouldn't. Now, 300k is impressive, but let's see how they last in the long run. Will it fall to virtually nothing after a month? Or will it plateau at a fair rate and keep selling strong? Or will it keep growing and sell better than a hotdog at a Yankees game...
So does that number include the 3g versions? I know I'm still waiting
@rdrunner No, it doesn't.
@Atkins
Source?
@daytripper "These sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores."
The sales include the deliveries of pre-ordered iPads. iPads 3G aren't delivered yet.
@LAY
We don't even know how many people pre-ordered the 3G version. I don't think my 3G iPad pre-order was counted in this total, so you're going to see another big number when the 3G iPad gets delivered later this month.
That's just 299,000 more than the joojoo
@frgadget
Didn't joojoo sell like 90?
@frgadget
THATS SO INSANE!
More like 299,910.
@frgadget
The Whoo Hoo?
@Kwame Nkrumah
I think JooJoo is definitely inferior to iPad (I may be wrong and my opinion is highly subjective). On the other hand, Notion Inc Adam is surely superior to iPad (except for the looks). But I doubt whether it will sell even a fraction of the number of iPads that will be sold. Marketing, brand name, play HUGE roles. People do not dare take risks on new products (many times they are justified too). Additionally, they hardly know about these new companies.
