Samsung Moment 2 with Sprint branding and TouchWiz 3.0 peeks out
The Samsung Moment is due to get Android 2.1 sometime in the near future, but it looks like it's also going to get a bit of a refresh -- check out this pic of a Sprint-branded Moment 2 that's said to have TouchWiz 3.0 on top of Android 2.1. Unfortunately, the same source says this thing doesn't have Sammy's new Super AMOLED screen, so we'd assume it doesn't have that new faster processor from the Galaxy S either -- all of which means the HTC EVO 4G is still really the Sprint device to wait for. But hey, maybe you love TouchWiz? Is that a thing? It's hard to say what the kids are into nowadays.

I thought when you make a sequel to a product, you improve the hardware. What's wrong, Samsung?
Meh. Had a Moment - it was complete and utter crap hardware and slugish implementation of Android. Looks like they added the search button. Why was that left out to start with? And maybe they've added an LED.....Samsung really needs to catch up with the times.
@fchipm
Crap hardware and sluggish, I think you just got a lemon Moment, because the Moment performs well in anything I have thrown at it. Hard not to like the phone, it is well built and smartly designed, great screen, decent specs. Calling it complete and utter crap is just silly, it is a well designed phone ,and like any phone, it has a couple flaws like the missing light for new messages. Ask Droid users about flaws with their device, it isn't perfect either even though everyone raves about it.
@All of you
Coincidentally, All of these 'spy'/'leaked' shots just happen to be slightly blurred whenever they're surface on the interwebs.
Come on, who're you fooling companies, just release the damn PR when the prototypes are ready.
@Dandmcd the only real complaint about the droid is the back battery cover falling off from time to time, other than that typing on the keyboard is easy after a few days, I've played with the moment in sprint when I went to look at the pre(before pre plus) and I just left with the impressions that it was cheap feeling and half done
@Dandmcd I also think the moment is a great phone. I have it now, and feel like I have the best phone Sprint offers, until that EVO 4G drops this summer.
@Rob Conway I liked the moment as well. I only returned it so I could use my upgrade credits to get something with a faster processor.
The one thing that took some getting used to (coming from a Touch Pro) is the fact that the Moment is much wider than I'm used to. it doesn't look like this newer version is any different.
@MetroKnight there's nothing fastter but a snapdragon. how does that work?
regarding moment, GREAT phone, once you use maintenance update to correct battery problem. only thing it needs is a fresh 2.1 update.
regarding this pic and story, I think it's bull
@fchipm i dont think that samsung even wants to be in the game of quality android phones i have a droid and a moment and the difference is obvious the moment feels like a toy and i think they are more focused on making a cheap phone
Keyboard layout still screwed up = immediate pass.
Why in the world do they continue to feel we need a dedicated number row on a horizontal QWERTY?
@whySoSerious Always loved the one on my Touch Pro...that was the best phone keyboard I ever had.
@whySoSerious it makes abbreviating "to", "too", "two" and "four" so much easier :D.
/s
@jerbear Ever used the Touch Pro2? No?
@juanvaldez I think I only wanted to make non number versions of words, eh, joke fail. four=for, and that "two" snuck in there when I was getting over-zealous.
It depends which Touch Pro 2 or the origina Touch Pro you use. The ATT variant does not have the numbers along the top. The HTC based model utilized in most markets does have the number across the top.
@whySoSerious
The Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 have 5 row keyboards, allowing them to dedicate one to numbers (or symbols in the AT&T variants)
@Peter F
That is a good point. To clarify, then, I'd have to say that a dedicated number row that causes you to FUBAR the bottom row of letters by interjecting the space bar into it is ridiculous.
So, 4 rows should be no dedicated number row. Five rows, go nuts.
@whySoSerious
I was one who was worried about the keyboard layout, but actually the keyboard is surpringly simple to use, the key placement is perfect in my mind. You have to try it before you complain about it, but I definitely type faster on this keyboard then any phone I have had previously, and find the keys easy to click and type without needing to look down at the keypad. Any keyboard that allows you to do that is a winner.
@whySoSerious switching from teh G1 to the Droid that was my biggest gripe. i loved my dedicated numbers. (esp when hammering out numbers and periods - IPs, dates, phone #s and whatnot)
@whySoSerious
Yea, that keyboard is definitely one of the reasons I never upgraded to the Moment, and I don't plan on upgrading to it either. I have a Rant, which has a pretty decent build quality, though the OS running on it sucks like no other. I'm definitely waiting for the HTC EVO.
@whySoSerious I think everyone continues to forget that there is STILL A TOUCH SCREEN KEYBOARD!, so stop bitching about the fucking layout you pansies, i may actually get this depending on price and launch date, if not then im getting an original moment.
HTC Nilay Touch 4G
TouchWizz -- ew.
TouchWiz FAIL!
Samsung Impression with Android? No thanks.
Oh I'll be waiting for the EVO 4G alright. You bet your ass I will.
@MegaJapan
I know the feeling brother, this phone cannot come soon enought.
@MegaJapan I have a feeling the EVO is going to be too big (and expensive) for me. I have another feeling that Sprint will be the carrier to inherit the iPhone 4G. With its announced 30-day guarantee, I think Sprint will be spitting out phone all over the place throughout the summer into the holiday season.
@MetroKnight
so wierd, I was just thinking that... I mean the only active 4g market right now is sprint... and there is confirmation that apple is developing a cdma iPhone... meanwhile Verizon has been bashing the iPhone and at&t with it's "droid does" and "There's a map for that" campaign... so with these facts in mind.. sprint does seem like the carrier of choice.
I will not be picking up an iphone none the less, only because I love my pre so much. The only viable choice worthy to replace my multitasking, home-brewing, super-nerd phone... would have to be the htc evo
I dont think this is the moment 2.. I think its more like the instinct s30 was to the instinct...
The one thing I heard recently, I can't remember where, maybe even an Engadget comment. Was that Bada apps would be usable and exclusive to Touchwizz. That said, I will probably get my hands on the Galaxy S and consider rooting it anyways and forget whatever that possibly eliminates from the exclusive catalog.
Touchwiz? Fail...x10...wonder if it has 2.1
wow, TouchWiz sucks. I am not sure why they would mess up Android with TouchWiz. What a terrible thing to do to a good smartphone OS.
ugh! horrible, horrible Touch Wiz.....why would they put it over a good smartphone OS?
1) Touchwiz sucks!!!
2) keyboard reminds of my old Helio, except larger.
3) as far as the screen size and processor speed, these will be reflected in the prices, not everyone can afford EVO
4) Hurry the F up Sprint!!! I need my Nexus One or EVO!!! 2 more months, then I will sign up with Tmo if you get them out by then!
I got the Moment, and well, this new one does nothing for me.
"all of which means the HTC EVO 4G is still really the Sprint device to wait for."
Not if you're a fan of the QWERTY, which I know that fact alone keeps a buddy of mine on an abysmal Touch Pro.
@Level 5 Why not get the original moment? I've used a htc 8125 and kaiser ii/tilt qwerty slider. The moment isn't any harder to type on regardless of how much people complain about the key layout. I went with a moment over a hero because of the qwerty and non htc skin job. I wasn't terribly impressed with touch flow on the fuze either.
is this going to include DTV?

TouchWiz is ewwwwww!!!
Small screen, slow hardware, shitty TouchWiz....
OMG QWERTY BUY BUY BUY!
Oh dear god can't TouchWiz die and never come back..
I might still have decent hardware. And the keyboard looks alil better than the original. Might turn out to be a good options for Andriod+hardware keyboard customers on Sprint.
Garbage.
Boo! They messed up the best things about the Moment, which are the AMOLED screen and the keyboard with offset keys. Now they're just in a regular grid like the awful Droid keyboard.
I got a Moment for my wife because I needed a new Android test phone and she likes it a lot, especially after she found the pink case for it.
This does NOT look like an improvement over the original Moment as far as looks go.
and PLEASE do NOT add touchwiz to this Samsung, its already taking long enough to upgrade the original moment w/ Stock Android, and the Behold II with Touchwiz.
Hey guys I have a question if anyone nice and intelligent wants to help me out. So I am planning on getting a Moment any day now but this makes me a little reluctant to buy it. From the looks of this (and other sources) there is nothing really worth waiting for except Android 2.1. But is the current Moment going to be upgraded or are they only going to release a new Moment with 2.1. Thanks a lot! Should I but one or not?
@ben1sandler (buy*)
@ben1sandler You get 30 days to try it then trade it in...
Why not try your moment for a few weeks, switch to a hero for a bit, and by then the moment 2 or the evo should be out
