SNES Mario Kart power slides onto (non-jailbroken) iPad? (Update)
You're looking at Super Mario Kart, running on the Apple iPad, courtesy of emulation guru ZodTTD. When do you get to play it, faithful reader? Hard to tell. If, say, the iPad had already been jailbroken, all you'd need to do is wait for a suitably safe jailbreak method, download RockApp or Cydia, grab the snes4iphone emulator you see running above, and fire up the ROM. However, the intriguing thing about the above video is not that it's running an SNES game -- but that ZodTTD claims he compiled a special version of his snes4iphone emulator "specifically for non-jailbroken iDevices." Since Zod is almost certainly an official developer, it's possible he output the emulator as an .ipa file and is testing it on a fresh iPad using Apple developer tools, but if we're lucky, it could instead mean that someone has finally found a way to sideload apps onto a stock Apple device. Either way, peep multitouch karts sliding and shells flying on video, right after the break.
Update: ZodTTD tells us that while he does have access to the jailbreak, he did have to flex developer muscle (and official dev tools) to make snes4iphone work on a non-jailbroken iPad. He says:
Update: ZodTTD tells us that while he does have access to the jailbreak, he did have to flex developer muscle (and official dev tools) to make snes4iphone work on a non-jailbroken iPad. He says:
Zod says that after Apple officially releases iPhone OS 4.0 and the existing jailbreak is distributed freely, he plans to create new versions of his emulators that run at the iPad's 1024 x 768 native resolution and support touchscreen controls, hardware keyboards and even external controllers should they come.The build of snes4iphone running on my iPad as seen in the video was actually based on an AppStore app I submitted called "snesty". Apple quickly rejected it right after pulling the NES emulator. I combined snesty with some snes4iphone features such as using the private API called CoreSurface. I used Apple developer tools and self signed it.

I would not be surprised to see this for iPhone as well. Also, that guy is bad at driving.
@masse The app is snes4iphone, of course its for iPhone as well. He'll never release it on the app store though, it'd never get approved. This is just a proof-of-concept video to show that he can work on iPad optimisation even without a jailbreak.
@masse
oh zod, you so pro
@AlexSanchez
Buy a Wii & a Classic controller Nintendo points card or credit card= Completly legal emulation as you legaly purchased from the shop channel as opposed to an illeagle torrent.
All pure win tenfold.
@masse
Why would apple ban Snesty??? WHY f*cking company!!!
@masse He'd be better on a netbook.
@masse
it doesnt look right...
he could have at least scaled it down landscape wise, its just a *bit* too stretched
I feel like playing my old Nintendo games now...
@JamRoc18
N900 + wiimote + tv out = awesome snes/nes games to play :D
And all possible right now. does ipad tv out using dock work for videos/games etc?
@Forphucsake computer + emulator + USB SNES controller = the real deal. touchscreens do not replace buttons.
@kojo87 Yeah but thats only at home/carrying around laptop to do it.
At least with N900 you can go to anywhere that has a wiimote or 6-axis PS3 controller and play on any tv that accepts component in (AV). Has PSX emulator with same controls too, I'd like to see the ipad do that.
@Forphucsake
Love my n1 but sometimes when playing emulators I wish I gad Droid. Only time though really.
Small ITX PC with Ion hooked up to CRT TV (via S-Video) plus a USB-converted SNES pad is the REAL deal.
This way you get the TV experience and the correct, analog resolution.
Very nice, would look good on a screen of that size too.
Side loading apps would nearly get me to consider buying one :|
i'm sure apple will just have a new firmware which removes the function
@mrdavedave
iDevices have been consistently jailbroken for over 3 years now. If Apple was going to do a complete security overhaul to prevent hacking, it would probably happen in OS 4. OS 3 devices should be safe.
@tonicboy You just brought up a good point and a couple of questions from me to follow. What IF OS 4.0 does indeed render the iPad/Phone/Pod unhackable? Will the devices be in such high demand knowing that you are completely at the whim of Apple? Just wondering.
@Darkseider
Since when has ANYTHING been unhackable?
This just solidified my decision to get an iPad....it's magical
@Mr Good Kat - oh please. I doubt there's any platform out there that doesn't have a SNES emulator...
@Mr Good Kat
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why everybody likes Mario?
@Atkins Who doesn't like a fat plumber that gets high in shrooms, goes down pipes and chases after a woman only never to get her?
Ha, in your face Toad.
Don't get me started on the ginormous controls covering the screen.
Another reason why nobody needs the iPad. I mean, have you -iPad buyers- found any useful use for the iPad (other than reading comics, I'll give it that)? Sitting at Starbucks or whatever, do you feel better browsing the incomplete web on your iPad, or would you rather do that with a Macbook which doesn't need to be held by both hands? At home, do you sit on the couch like Jobs, and watch your fav TV show with the iPad held in both hands, or would you rather do that on your Macbook? On the street -where a laptop isn't practical- is there anything you find easier to be done on the iPad, that you couldn't do on your iPhone?
I mean people are unanimously in agreement that iPhone apps look horrible when scaled up to the iPad's screen. This is a great example. This iPad craze is beyond control.
@TareG Hmmm... Didn't we talk about this already?
I am pretty sure iPad owners feel ok, doesn't seem to be your case though.
@TareG
iPad would be awesome for studying... taking the professor's powerpoints and bringing it with you everywhere knowing that it'll last for at least 10 hours or downloading an pdf textbook, using a pdf reader app to read it and not having to carry a 1,200 page biology textbook.
Seriously.. what's your gripe with the iPad? People bought it because they found use for it..
300k first day sales vs. 90 (oops 75) sales.. kinda says something about the product..
@ml2k1
Again, I said the best thing was that it acts as a e-reader (comics, studying, pdfs), but that's it.
@TareG
Why is it best it only does that? Is that cos the more you see one the more you want one?
Yes, the Ipad craze is beyond control. Your 6000 posts over the last week certainly prove that.
Haven't you got a job or something? Why are you so down?
@TareG
A slate would be great for travel. I travel a LOT and while the iPhone is really great for jumping on the web and finding some info, it's not really a pleasant web browsing experience (although far better than most phones). A netbook is nice for portability but not as portable as the iPad (every ounce counts when you're lugging your backpack everywhere) and always so underpowered. It's also much nicer for reading/browsing on the couch or in a cafe.
ZodTTD runs a repository on Cydia and has ported many a game to the iPhone/iPod Touch, and now, it appears, the iPad as well.
It's just running by using the Development Kit, he did the same with the PSX emulator showing a video of it running on a 3GS before it was jailbroken (and offered people who donated to try it by self-signing with his dev account to their UDIDs).
Those on screen controls are horrible.
y dnt they just use regular sized overlay buttons? y r they so frikkin big...?
Like for instance, here I quickly made something in photoshop of what it SHOULD look like -.-

@uHorndog
probably scaled up something he had for a smaller touch interface...
Just so everybody knows, ZodTTD is a very respected developer on the handheld emulator scene. He was one of the original developers of NES/SNES emus (among others) for Palm and the Zodiac. He has a long standing repository on Cydia.
"Since Zod is almost certainly a developer"..."...almost..."
Come on Sean Hollister, get your head in the game.
@Evan R
If you're gonna quote, at least quote the full sentence.
The iPad just justified its own existence.
NintenDon't but iPad does...
Actually, NintenDoes and iPad kinda does too.
Legend!
My n64 might come out today :)
Apps like this are why I think I will always prefer Android. iPhone users have to jailbreak/hack/do whatever is going on here to have games like this, but Android users can just download an app from the market. Apple will never be open to stuff like this, whereas the Android market always has and always will be.
@Steve B
Uhh, Android users can't even download 2.1 - a 3 month old update.
Some Android users can download some Android apps from the market. Isn't that a more accurate statement?
The N1 doesn't have Flash, why don't you install it?
@suicidebob
Any android user can download 2.1. Now whether they get that update from the carrier is another question. It's cute that you just tried to downplay his argument by proving it exactly.
@suicidebob Seeing that I was running 2.1 a full month before the OTA came out I would say you FAIL. Not to mention I can just download the SNES emulator from the Android market and play away. No need to hack, jailbreak,whatever. Oh and I have no fear of it being pulled either. kthxbye
@insky
You still have to root to install it.
No hacking?
my ass.....
@logicbombde No, you don't have to root an Android phone to install an emulator. Why would you even post something like that?
*Yawn*
Was playing it on my N1 yesterday...
@Bongo123 Mate you got it spot on there!!!
ah nothing better than playing your old pokemon games on your new apple device.
