@BurtonBytes How on earth would Apple counter it? Android runs on multiple vendor handsets, they are always going to outsell Apple in terms of handsets and therefore there will be more apps, it's pretty easy maths really.
Having said that, what Apple has achieved in the time it has been in the smarthphone market is nothing short of astonishing.
When I talk about countering this, my thoughts turn to bringing more product differentiation, more reasons to buy an Apple branded device over an Android one.
I think put simply, Android is a threat to the current Apple iPhone and OS version. My hope is that Apple will move their OS and hardware significantly forward as to bring in more product innovation, features and usability. Apple's OS by my own admission, a iPhone user from launch, does now seem creaky. I'm running a 3G and my hope is that now my contract is up with O2, there will be a genuinely good reason to await the 3GS replacement in June/July.
@TheLondonExchange Giving the marketing effort (wherever a symbol of a mobile phone is required, iPhone is shown!) & the head-start in the capacitive touch screen arena, it is only natural iPhone's sales figure hasn't been touched yet. IMHO, overall, HTC EVO may be better than the current iPhone. However, I will wait for iPhone 4G (and maybe HTC's version of Windows Phone 7) before I buy myself a new phone - could be Android, WP7, Apple OS). If iPhone 4G is below 4", that option is out anyway.
@TheLondonExchange True, but they also had a pretty big headstart. As of late Android is right on the heels of Apple. They need to do something today and especially in June or I feel they are in big trouble. A big many of Android users are people that jumped the Apple ship (like myself. I had all 3 iPhones) I loved the iPhone and what it does it does great. I think a bunch of users as of late are either jumping from ATT/Apple or finally have the option to get great smartphones from better providers like Verizon and their Droid. What Droid has been able to do is pretty amazing especially with how much the iPhone has dominated the last three years. I jumped as a personal choice because I was so tired of Apple's control issues. All the apps that have been kicked out or rejected and also I felt as if the iPhone OS is very dated and Apple has gotten a little lazy with this past upgrade. There is not a big difference at all from the 3G to 3Gs and to be honest the 3G should of had the video camera capabilities all along. Anyways, this whole competition is only going to get better and better and we as the consumer are going to continue to get great smartphones with that next "killer" feature and a better and better price. Here's to Apple amazing me today and in June, but I am pretty sure I will continue to be a happy Android user. Bring the EVO to other networks HTC even if its only 3G. I would love that phone. To be honest I don't see Apple at their best even compairing to the EVO 4G.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Lets see if Apple can counter this later today.

All the android phones combined have not reached the level of the iPhone sales...
@wilvo Don't forget about the iPod touch and iPad.

And when Apple announces its got 200,000 apps, and with the iPad its only gonna get even more ...
Oh and they're dropping prices in iPhones (summer) and iPod touches (later this year) like they always do...
Uhm...We should be at 300,000 by the end of the year, easy.
Is that a counterpunch? Or is stepping on Android (free software)'s neck cheating?
