We'd heard through the grapevine that the engineers at Round Rock were working on a
number of slates to fill the
Streak lineup, but man, we didn't see this coming... at least not yet. A couple of images along with an internal Dell announcement landed on our virtual doorstep this fine morning, and lo and behold, it looks as if a 7-inch and 10-inch Streak tablet is on the horizon. But that's not all -- we learned that the "
coming soon" we heard earlier regarding the
Aero's release date on AT&T really means "June." Later this "summer," said phone will be joined by the Streak 5 (yeah, that's the
Mini 5 we've had for months now) for those who prefer a more capable mobile. As for the 7-inch Streak? Look for it to launch (presumably with or without AT&T support) late in 2010, while a 10-inch flavor follows in "early 2011." Is
Sidetalkin' really about to return? We're ready --
so ready.
Update: Dell hit us up with a totally corporate line when we dug deeper for details:
"Dell continually develops and tests new products that extend the mobile experience. We have not made any product announcements and do not comment on speculation, rumor or unannounced products."
So insightful.
@Original Nosebleed
the dell logo isn't attractive(and looks a bit crap on the tablet) but if its good value then i'm sold
@jpm 9
Why is the bezel so huge? Cant they make it 1/3rd that size?
@JS
Then how are you going to hold it? Have you tried holding the iPad? Without the wide bezel you would drop in in 3 minutes.
@JS Do you want your thumbs to block the screen?
@jpm
Oh Yeah! Oh Yeah! lets get ready to rumbllllleeeee!!!
@JS
I guess you have just never held one?
IF YOU HAD, then you would know why it is like this.
@JS
You need some kind of bevel to hold on to without interfering with the screen.
@jpm
Perhaps Dell should invest in a logo that looks like a piece of fruit.
Is that what makes hardware "good" these days? The logo?
Since when did features and specs and compatibility (like printing!) stop selling hardware?
Ahh... since Crapple took over the minds of the youths of America
@iTards
Look, if you guys have no idea how to hold it then Apple should have made the screen bigger and then made the sides unresponsive to touch. When an iTard app is running that needs touch on the sides then just display black or a frame pattern on the sides (remember, that part of the screen would be unavailable anyway if there was a bezel).
Anyway, maybe I'll upload some pics of me holding an iPad ergonomically without the use of wide bezel area later today.
Bezels are an eyesore and a waste .. it makes the device big when the screen real estate is small. A 6 inch wide screen display with no bezel could fit in a pocket.
@JS Yes, prefacing your post with "iTards" enhances your argument and apparent maturity!
Can you show us some of these amazing bezel-less tablets, or are all tablet designers just not as smart as you?
@joe23521 I wish they would get rid of the bezel and include finger negating software. I want more real estate!
@JS
No matter what you say and what reasoning you offer, the fervent immature language you prefaced with has made your arguments a waste of e-space. You really shouldn't come out of the gates with such a piss poor approach.
@nguyendaniel here we go again
@JS
Looks are deceiving in pictures.
The iPad's bezel looks huge too... but in real life, it's only as wide as your thumb.
Hold up your thumb... that's how wide the bezel is. No big deal.
How does one hold a book? How does one hold an Iphone?
@Duke And yet iTard is so appropriate to the behavior of so many Apple users. We call it like we see it.
@espentan "How does one hold an Iphone? "
By the ends... Where there's a bezel.
LOL
@espentan .. the iPhone (NOT Iphone) fits in the palm of your hand so you can hold it easily by the edges. The iPad doesn't.
Five year old kids could understand the fundamentals behind all of this.
@taligent That's ridiculous. I don't hold my iPhone by its bezel. Its own weight keeps it on my hands, and I stick out a finger underneath to keep it sliding off. When I use it in landscape with both hands, I stick out a finger or two beneath it with both hands. Anyone who actually held their iPhone by its bezel wouldn't be able to use the fingers of that hand (or both hands) for interacting with the screen. I doubt I ever touch the thing's bezel at all.
Quit making up excuses for bad design. You sound like a knee-jerk Apple apologist to me.
@Dan12345 Oh, and as long as I'm venting, here's a Youtube video showing how people actually interact with the iPad. You'll see nobody, neither the person being interviewed, nor the people playing with the iPad in the background, are actually holding it by the bezel when they use it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otydDXGwv2g&feature=related
@Dan12345
i didnt make it very far through the video, maybe cos the first person holding it in the clip has his left thumb resting on the bezel, so the thing doesnt flop down onto the floor...
@nguyendaniel Actually, Dell is very serious about the production of their tablets (mini streak) that's why they're now creating this. Reactions--

Good, the more competition Apple has the better.
@ChocNut
Lmao you really think it will stop the juggernaut?
I mean DELL is a big name granted but they aren't exactly on Apple's level.
I'm interested in what they bring but I doubt I'd buy another one of their products ever again.
Dell's gonna need a miracle
@TheLondonExchange
"I mean DELL is a big name granted but they aren't exactly on Apple's level."
o_0
@ChocNut
Too bad it's an android and not windows 7. might as well buy a phone because these are not tablets but giant phones.
@TheLondonExchange
Dell is way above Apple in computers shipped and is a bigger brand than apple when you are looking at the computer market.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2010/04/pc-shipments-surge-on-corporate-purchases/1
@TheLondonExchange
You don't have a clue do you?
@ChocNut
Yeah, that way Apple's victory will be even sweeter
@jdm28690 Exactly, for the 5" I am all thumbs up. For the 10" to be twice the size without any difference in performance... uhm, no.
I'd love a 10" netbook slate though running W7 with Dell's new touch-bar docked on the top.
@ChocNut Why the hell is it, that whenever some kind of product surfaces that Apple too happens to sell too, some people only can say "well, it's competition for Apple"?! It's not like they originally invented the type of product.
@jdm28690 They probably won't have a digitizer or pen support like the Slate, so I don't think Dell should bother with 7 on these 2 devices.
@ChocNut
I thought it said steak tablet.
@ChocNut
We're not talking laptops...we're NOT talking computers here.
We ARE talking TABLETS here (and phones too)
Dell has never exceeded in either category.
Try again Apple Haters.
Sorry but its the truth. Now as far as total revenue and money is concerned both companies are doing fine financially most likely. However I'm guessing that Apple is more profitable than Dell anyday of the week.
@N900
HP Slate will support pens via digitizer. At least that's the word Gottabemobile.com got from HP. We still don't know the extent of that support.
@ChocNut Apple has no competition. They have a monopoly over brainwashing people with innovative technologies like the iAd service.
/s
Wow. I really don't think he means competition as in "Dell to crush Apple and be #1" or any shit like that. I think he means "more competition to Apple so they can push something better and vice-versa."
What; the 2 companies can't fucking co-exist or something?
@jdm28690
Sounds good to me; I know that on a daily basis I now use my Android phone a lot more than my pc. I'd be perfectly happy with a tablet pc with a keyboard dock, SD reader, and USB input.
@JXCGunrunna Well it's a pretty easy thing for Dell to do.
What without all that pesky software to design and write. And not having to design it's own hardware. And then not having to worry about great customer service after the sale.
All Dell has to do it throw a machine together and slap their name on it.
Dell would be pissing in the wind if Apple and Google didn't show them which direction to face.
@ChocNut
Looks like Microsoft missed the Tablet train too. Ironic since they were talking about the tablet vision for about a decade .. and have nothing worthwhile to show for it. I reckon sometime in 2011 they will start an internal project for Tablets with product release in 2015 .. containing the features of present day iPad (which by then will have video conferencing, Light Peak, and LTE support).
@JXCGunrunna
If you compare company value AAPL > GOOG + DELL.
@ChocNut
agreen, in fact i would like to see someone release a tablet like this that was running WinMo 7. Win 7 touch is just too clunky and when your using a slate your not going to need most of the features of the full windows anyway.
I'd pay $500 for it. it would work perfectly for the kitchen as a cookbook, then you could take it on trips with you and use it.
@Xega
For real. Why is this impressive. Me and my nephew could get one built by next year. Big companies move so slowly. I think that's why Google is so impressive.
@Motlee Yeah like Apple makes it's hardware in-house completely.. And they had to build on top of an existing OS to get a decent one..
@andthemaniam in the business world, dell are huge...and apple is next to nothing
@ChocNut
Dell and Apple are competitors in the same way that Chevy and Porsche are competitors. Sure, they sell the same stuff, but they are hardly competing for the same demographic.
@TheLondonExchange You completely guessed correctly. Apple makes the largest profit out of any computer maker.
http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-revenue-vs-operating-profit-share-of-top-pc-vendors-2010-3
Unfortunately, this only means that anyone who buys something from Apple is paying significantly more for the brand. Commentators here love to defend Apple's profit by claiming Apple has higher R&D Costs, etc..., etc... but the truth is - Apple makes the most profit.
As long as people flock to the name brand though, Apple is going to keep their margins sky high. Just keep that in mind when you buy your iPad knowing it's actual cost is far, far lower than what you pay for it.
@JXCGunrunna GM sells more cars than Porsche.
@TheLondonExchange
Wasn't Dell the number selling PC manufacturer for half of the last decade?
I feel like some mom and pop custom computer shop (Alienware? ;) ) sells more computers than the iMac!
