@ChocNut Why the hell is it, that whenever some kind of product surfaces that Apple too happens to sell too, some people only can say "well, it's competition for Apple"?! It's not like they originally invented the type of product.
We're not talking laptops...we're NOT talking computers here.
We ARE talking TABLETS here (and phones too)
Dell has never exceeded in either category.
Try again Apple Haters.
Sorry but its the truth. Now as far as total revenue and money is concerned both companies are doing fine financially most likely. However I'm guessing that Apple is more profitable than Dell anyday of the week.
Wow. I really don't think he means competition as in "Dell to crush Apple and be #1" or any shit like that. I think he means "more competition to Apple so they can push something better and vice-versa."
What; the 2 companies can't fucking co-exist or something?
Sounds good to me; I know that on a daily basis I now use my Android phone a lot more than my pc. I'd be perfectly happy with a tablet pc with a keyboard dock, SD reader, and USB input.
@JXCGunrunna Well it's a pretty easy thing for Dell to do. What without all that pesky software to design and write. And not having to design it's own hardware. And then not having to worry about great customer service after the sale. All Dell has to do it throw a machine together and slap their name on it. Dell would be pissing in the wind if Apple and Google didn't show them which direction to face.
Looks like Microsoft missed the Tablet train too. Ironic since they were talking about the tablet vision for about a decade .. and have nothing worthwhile to show for it. I reckon sometime in 2011 they will start an internal project for Tablets with product release in 2015 .. containing the features of present day iPad (which by then will have video conferencing, Light Peak, and LTE support).
agreen, in fact i would like to see someone release a tablet like this that was running WinMo 7. Win 7 touch is just too clunky and when your using a slate your not going to need most of the features of the full windows anyway.
I'd pay $500 for it. it would work perfectly for the kitchen as a cookbook, then you could take it on trips with you and use it.
For real. Why is this impressive. Me and my nephew could get one built by next year. Big companies move so slowly. I think that's why Google is so impressive.
Dell and Apple are competitors in the same way that Chevy and Porsche are competitors. Sure, they sell the same stuff, but they are hardly competing for the same demographic.
Unfortunately, this only means that anyone who buys something from Apple is paying significantly more for the brand. Commentators here love to defend Apple's profit by claiming Apple has higher R&D Costs, etc..., etc... but the truth is - Apple makes the most profit.
As long as people flock to the name brand though, Apple is going to keep their margins sky high. Just keep that in mind when you buy your iPad knowing it's actual cost is far, far lower than what you pay for it.
@cherryboom And yes, Dell does make their own computers, but not the software. MS is never gonna stop making software, and they are never gonna stop thinking about cash-money; and the only way them to make a lot of cash-money (as well as get their OS out to everyone) is to license it to manufacturers that make the hardware for their software to run.
The definition of computer surely isn't "a machine that is built from a company that makes it's own hardware AND software." Your point is moot.
@KosherTelephone That would have been a jackpot! Eat and use it at the same time. lol! i'd like to see how this performs, apple's gonna run for its money! The more competiton the better
Seeing a huge underestimation of Dell's expertise and experience in both manufactoring and marketing of computers .Made evident by some of the remarks .While I'm not a huge "dell-fan " myself I do understand the company is quite good at what it does.
You don't become such a huge retailer if you're crap at it.Try it,you'll see.And no matter how cheap your product is,if it's crap you also won't become as big as Dell is now .
you must be bonkers dude. even with their numbers, they make comparatively peanuts compared to apple, and was eclipsed in market value by 2-4x already.
you cant put those two together. dell sucks. apple doesnt.
Apple is #1 for 9 years in a row for Customer service. For the sixth consecutive year, Apple ranked number one in BusinessWeek’s 50 Most Innovative Companies report
All of that and they employ Americans and pay them well.
Of course Apple is pricing their stuff so as to make a nice profit. They are a public company, so their primary obligation is to make a profit. You, like me and everyone else can simply vote with your wallet.
The real question is: Are their products so compelling to you that you are willing to pay their price? If yes, buy. If not, don't. For me personally, they often are. Your mileage may vary.
But don't lament about a public company actually making a profit. I think we've seen more than enough of those who don't, lately. If they are capable of making a product that's so interesting that people are actually queuing to be allowed to pay top dollar for it, then more power to them.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Good, the more competition Apple has the better.
@ChocNut
Lmao you really think it will stop the juggernaut?
I mean DELL is a big name granted but they aren't exactly on Apple's level.
I'm interested in what they bring but I doubt I'd buy another one of their products ever again.
Dell's gonna need a miracle
@TheLondonExchange
"I mean DELL is a big name granted but they aren't exactly on Apple's level."
o_0
@ChocNut
Too bad it's an android and not windows 7. might as well buy a phone because these are not tablets but giant phones.
@TheLondonExchange
Dell is way above Apple in computers shipped and is a bigger brand than apple when you are looking at the computer market.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2010/04/pc-shipments-surge-on-corporate-purchases/1
@TheLondonExchange
You don't have a clue do you?
@ChocNut
Yeah, that way Apple's victory will be even sweeter
@jdm28690 Exactly, for the 5" I am all thumbs up. For the 10" to be twice the size without any difference in performance... uhm, no.
I'd love a 10" netbook slate though running W7 with Dell's new touch-bar docked on the top.
@ChocNut Why the hell is it, that whenever some kind of product surfaces that Apple too happens to sell too, some people only can say "well, it's competition for Apple"?! It's not like they originally invented the type of product.
@jdm28690 They probably won't have a digitizer or pen support like the Slate, so I don't think Dell should bother with 7 on these 2 devices.
@ChocNut
I thought it said steak tablet.
@ChocNut

@N900
HP Slate will support pens via digitizer. At least that's the word Gottabemobile.com got from HP. We still don't know the extent of that support.
@ChocNut Apple has no competition. They have a monopoly over brainwashing people with innovative technologies like the iAd service.

If you compare company value AAPL > GOOG + DELL.
@ChocNut

@Xega
For real. Why is this impressive. Me and my nephew could get one built by next year. Big companies move so slowly. I think that's why Google is so impressive.
@Motlee Yeah like Apple makes it's hardware in-house completely.. And they had to build on top of an existing OS to get a decent one..
@andthemaniam in the business world, dell are huge...and apple is next to nothing
@ChocNut
Dell and Apple are competitors in the same way that Chevy and Porsche are competitors. Sure, they sell the same stuff, but they are hardly competing for the same demographic.
@TheLondonExchange You completely guessed correctly. Apple makes the largest profit out of any computer maker.

@JXCGunrunna GM sells more cars than Porsche.
@TheLondonExchange
Wasn't Dell the number selling PC manufacturer for half of the last decade?
I feel like some mom and pop custom computer shop (Alienware? ;) ) sells more computers than the iMac!
@TheLondonExchange
Top PC Manufacturers in the world
1. HP
2.dell
3.sony vaio
4.apple
So yes Apple is not on Dell's level they are two places below.
@JXCGunrunna http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2010/industries/8/index.html says Apple made 4x more profit than Dell. You were saying?
@JS What the hell are you talking about? There have been MS tablet pc's for over ten years now.
@cherryboom if MS cancelled their Windows license to them.
Lolwut?
@fourthletter
That's ridiculous logic. Selling more units doesn't make you better. Who sells more, Chevy, or Bentley? Honda, or Jaguar?
No one here believes that Dell produces a higher quality product than Apple, or HP, or Lenovo, they're just the cheapest, so they move more units.

@PastorTom
Nope. It's more like Honda versus Porsche.
Although I really doubt you fully understand either comparison.
@N900
I think apples domination of the mp3 market has led the ignorant to believe that in all areas of technology, there can only be one.
and if theres another. they're copying the one.
@KosherTelephone
That would have been a jackpot! Eat and use it at the same time. lol! i'd like to see how this performs, apple's gonna run for its money! The more competiton the better
@fourthletter Shouldn't Acer be in there ?
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/acer_takes_no_2_spot_worldwide_pc_business
Certainly above Apple if not Dell...
@Anatidae
Yeah it costs about $260 to build an iPad labor and all.
@Cats
I can make more of a profit with a lemonade stand outside my house but does that put me on the same level as Welch's?
@TheLondonExchange I'm pretty sure Dell sells just a FEW more computers than Apple does.
Seeing a huge underestimation of Dell's expertise and experience in both manufactoring and marketing of computers .Made evident by some of the remarks .While I'm not a huge "dell-fan " myself I do understand the company is quite good at what it does.

@N900 Dell doesn't make their own computers, they use parts from different manufacturers... so does Apple, lol...
@PastorTom Then why is it when it comes to iPhones or iPads, all the fanboys talk about sales figures?
@andthemaniam
Check the market cap figure, smart guy. The two companies are worlds apart.
@Cats That's accumulated sales including phones and mobile players. Dell sells more computers than Apple by a huge margin.
@JXCGunrunna
