Adobe CEO: Flash coming to Android, WebOS and BlackBerry 'smartphones and tablets' in 2H 2010
This week Adobe released version 5 of its Creative Suite software compilation. CEO Shantanu Narayen has naturally hit the interview trail to promote his company's wares, but the biggest news from him is actually a delay of sorts. We'd previously heard that Android, WebOS and BlackBerry versions of Flash 10.1 would be available in the first half of 2010, but Adobe's chief now places delivery to those platforms in the second half of the year. At least consolation may be found in his teasing of new Flash-enabled tablets -- most likely to be running Android or Chrome OS -- which we're told to expect to see within the same time frame. As to the question of Apple's holdout from Flash nirvana, Narayen describes it as a business rather than technology decision, which "hurts consumers" and will ultimately be judged by people voting "for the experience that they want through their wallet." Can't really argue with that. Skip past the break for the full interview.
Update: The blog of Adobe's Lee Brimelow gives us a likely reason for the delay: Flash Player 10.1 for Android has just entered private beta, as has AIR 2.0, with public betas on the way. Devs can sign up to be notified about both right here.

85 million and counting iPhones and iPod touch, NO FLASH, NO PROBLEM.
450.000 iPads in just a couple of days, NO FLASH, NO PROBLEM.
ADOBE admitting lack of flash on Apple devices will hurt business.
What else do you need Adobe, to fix your crapware? Get off your lazy ass or face extinction, is that simple.
Oh and btw, iPhone 4.0 is coming. Just saying.
ClickToFlash!
Apparently it's not coming, sucks! Guess I'll have 2 buy a tablet instead, and a MiFi or root my Droid... what a joke!
Perhaps Apple is right in ignoring Flash for the iPhone/Touch/iPad platforms.
You come out with a new device or upgrade your OS... and then hope that Adobe will eventually get around to supporting it. Maybe this quarter, maybe next quarter, maybe next year. Who knows?
Especially since Adobe is famous for delaying upgrades and bug fixes until it's time for the next annual release of CS whatever, thus giving you a "reason" to upgrade.
Even then, sometimes they NEVER get around to fixing an issue...
Well my battery already last a day and a half from normal use. I only turn on the various radios when I need them. I'd rather have the option of flash than not have it. I can always plug in my phone or replace the battery... Don't worry about my battery. Give me flash. Give me everything!
Apple is attacking Adobe and their response is to delay flash release for other smartphones... oi. Can you add insult to your own injury? I almost pretty much hate Apple but they do some pretty cool stuff. I really like how they are actually get a reaction from the internet from their "no flash ever" push. Seems to me only thing HTML5 is missing is some DRM support and official video codec (I'm sure theres more than that.) Not that I like DRM but I want to watch shows on my computer and thats not going to happen unless big biz can protect their content. Flash need not be installed on my nexus one.
Bullsh*t what the apple fanboys say and here one reason:They won't know flash is causing crashes, they'll just know their device isn't working well.
Since many here do actually gets the points most are ignored and doesn't not actually make sense to some of the non-techies that tends to go with what apple says
Most say that Adobe was too lazy in fact and see it,but in another reality that's a lie and why:Most likely with a monopoly they tends to get things too late at the beginning since they know for a fact that it may not work auto. and good. It won't work fast.
Most want things to be done fast, but awhile those will be ignoring what people say that doesn't make sense is true no matter what people say
When you think about reality to it's truest form things that doesn't make is true evenly when scrambled up or scatter points that doesn't make sense, when you think about them a little and then connect them it actually make sense
So please do yourselves a favor and throw away the fanboyness and just watch from the sidelines and observe the obvious fact they you don't normally think about
To watch most videos on my phone. Hulu would be cool to have on my bus ride.
SCREW YOU ADOBE. You said it was going to be released for the palm phones last YEAR. Give us a solid date you doucher. Your just making yourself more of an idiot.
He's ugly.
This is a huge FAIL for Adobe, and a real strategic problem for Android. Flash on Android would have provided ammo against iPhone. With June approaching fast and new iPhones / OS4 certainly debuting then, Android is going to be left at a marketing disadvantage. Adobe needs new leadership immediately, starting with this useless CEO. They need to get rid of all the Indian nationals who have internally replaced a lot of the management and dev positions. It's created a real contentious atmosphere and pushed out a lot of their best talent. Adobe is obviously a ship drifting on the open sea right now, and Google has tied themselves to the wrong boat it seems.
@ddddd
Or people who hate obnoxious ads and annoying intro pages. The internet really can suck without Flashblock and Adblock Plus.
Flash is equally as garbage on Windows 7 and Windows XP as anywhere else, all those talking about flash not being a problem on windows are in denial.
@Kwame Nkrumah Never had any issues with Flash on Windows, Mac or Linux. What's your problem?
how about a "FLASH PHONE O/S"?
i hate blue lego blocks -___-
Nexus one owner here, and I don't even care about flash, I just wish the fanboys on both sides would just shut the hell up about it already. If it lets me play Canabalt fine, thats great but somehow i doubt it will perform as expected. Aside from streaming video and some mostly crappy games what do people even want flash for? It seems like aside from those two cases its mostly used for awful restaurant menu pages and heavy photographer's slideshows.
@milkham Indeed. Apart from an annoying window saying you can't see certain content because the plugin is missing its usefulness - on a MOBILE device - is debatable.The only thing you really require media-plugins for is video and there's plenty of ways around that . It's an entirely different story for tablets though . Adobe is not only developing its new flash-version for smartphones but wil find the tablet-market far more important .It's also - in huge part- not a conflict about "what is the best standard " but rather about "who controls that standard " .
It is Utopian - and it will never happen- to think the entirety of internet will feature open source technology.Conflicts like these are about $$ gained from controlling codecs and the tools to deploy those codecs . That is why we will see a compromise-solution in the end .
I also think the entire "Flash drains your battery" argument is bogus because it isn't Flash doing that ,it is any rich media streaming . Look at 5 videos by means of Flash and then the same 5 with any other codec or plugin . You won't see any difference in battery-depletion.
The entire issue is about control over any future standard .
@rik66
No its not... Apple doesn't control HTML5. And it works, as opposed to the rickety Flash. Those two things make it kind of a no brainer.
Does Apple control iAd? Sure I guess, but you'll never have to see those if you don't click on them, so what's the problem? How could something thats ultimately going to bring average prices down a bad thing?
The first iPhone came out in 2007 without flash, Adobe should have seen the writing on the wall then.
So basically the brown man wants to destroy Android, BB and WebOS?
Somebody stop him!!!
@Wesscoast, basically you are a racist.
@incognito
LMAO!!!
Oversensitive much?
@ddddd
Can't help you I had a 1st gen iPhone at one time but AT&Ts was ultimately bad enough that I paid the ETF and grabbed a BB Tour which is actually just short of useless for web browsing (but is perfect for phone/email/messaging).
oh joy; yet another reason for Adobe to want to update itself all the damn time. seems like every five minutes.
Flash Beta is hitting Android in May, will require Fruyo i.e. It will be announced at the I/O.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/04/18/flash-beta-to-hit-android-devices-in-may-require-froyo-we-have-sign-up-links/
I saw some version of Quake running in html5 w/ no plugin. A webpage running Quake on it's own sounds like the future to me, but whatever, I won't waste my time bickering about it. Probably some aspect of it I don't understand (or care to)
The deal is this: Apple isn't supporting flash, therefore websites who have flash will be losing the opportunity to communicate with MILLIONS of people. If I had flash on a website, I would change it for that reason alone. Tech bullshit aside, why would any business savvy person want to miss out on that significant portion of internet traffic?
I do like Adobe's creative products very much, though, and think the gentleman handled himself well in the interview.
I have AdFree on my HTC Hero, which has flash player, blocking ads.
The vast majority of people crying "WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT FLASH ON A PHONE" are disgruntled iPhone users.
I can't wait to have flash on my droid. Hulu and non-youtube video ftw
Flash ?
old technology ?
They blew it
If flash drains battery.. let it be.. .. at least i will have to choice for using it or not!
I cant wait for flash, we like it or not many websites have some type of flash integrated to them.
I guess until the web moves to HTML5 and hopefully some standard is followed.

I've had flash on my htc desire all this time and I'm glad I did. Yes, it is slow and often I just turn it off to avoid loading ads, but it works. This is 2010 and a lot of websites still rely on flash, so when I had to check so restaurant and boutique hotel websites that were flash only I was happy because otherwise I would have been shit out if luck. It doesn't hurt to have flash for those rate occasions when you absolutely need it. May be in a few years we wont need it as much as more websites will move to html5, however many will still use flash.especially the smaller ones.
yeah, you can say whatever you want about flash, html5, etc... the thing is I have already needed to look up something on flash websites only to find that the browser on my phone doesn't support flash. I agree 100% flash is badly designed, drains battery life, takes 100% cpu, but a whole lot of sites are built in flash. so until this changes (not in 2 days) flash on a phone can be usefull. and get serious : it's not because you ran flash like 5 minutes that your phone is goin battery-dead.
@ddddd "Thanks for all the sites that was made for the iPhone and now they are all broken."
That's what you get when devs are creating things for 1 particular company, device or program.
... and why is it so many people think that flash is just for vewing videos ? there was a time when flash was really hype and a lot of website used it. sure it's not the case anymore, but until these websites get updated, i can understand why 99% of browsers have flash.
... and finally it's clear that most flash websites will look damn ugly on small devices such as phones because they were not designed to be on small screens anyways. you'll have to zoom in / zoom out constantly.
@hated one
he blew it (with his iPad) ^_^
All those negative comments of people without imagination! imagine the possibilities! As a Flash developer you can do A LOT!!
I was a N800 user for a long time (I give it to a 4 years kid that use it more than me) and I create small applications for specific use, for learning stuff... for example, the 4 years kid was confused with some colors, so I develop a application that help him in that task... I develop a few applications so he can learn different things... like other languages, names of animals, plants, etc...
For iPhone users maybe this is not the big deal, but is just maybe because they can't have flash on their phones... but I don't see the problem! they can stream video anyway, and they kill their battery anyway, without flash...
Be more creative! use that brain you have! stop writing those comments...
I think the phone's browser should support Flash. That just makes sense. But if FLASH consumes too much of my phone's battery, I should be able to enable and disable it. I don't know if Android is planning for this when Flash comes to their handsets but it probably would be a good battery saving option.
It should NOT preemptively determine I shouldn't have the choice to view Flash content.
If I'm low on battery life, it doesn't make sense to use memory intensive applications that effectively kills my primary reason for having a cell phone, and that is to make important phone calls. Can't then complain when the phone shuts down due to low battery.
People can figure this usage stuff out for themselves or is that too much for them to do? I guess for those that cannot, get a Big Brother type handset that offers fewer choices and determines what media you can view.
hey Adobe now that your making all these apps for mobile how about a Flash Development App for Linux? I'd really like that because the only time I boot into windoze is when I use your programs.
@buzz86us If not for your Flash development program i'd have absolutely no need for windoze.
Seems some confusion about release dates. Serge Jespers, from Adobe clarifies that Flash Player 10.1 for Android will ship in H1 of 2010:
http://www.webkitchen.be/2010/04/19/flash-player-10-1-for-android-still-on-track-for-h1-release/
What the Adobe CEO was apparently refering to was that Android devices shipping with Flash pre-installed won't happen until H2 of 2010, since time is needed to get it ready.
Also note that the private beta for Flash Player 10.1 for Android has been happening for quite some time. Just look at all the videos out there with Flash 10.1 on Android devices. The videos are mainly from Adobe, but some Flash developers have also posted demo videos. It's the public beta of Flash Player 10.1 on Android that seems to be happening quite soon.
And what happened to Maemo/MeeGo support...?
Ok Palm and BB go ahead please stay away from my droid!
Droid users revolt!
Is like Apple vs Flash.
Hey guys, can you amend the article... turns out this is a misunderstanding, there's no slippage, and Android FP 10.1 will be available in H1 (http://www.webkitchen.be/2010/04/19/flash-player-10-1-for-android-still-on-track-for-h1-release/) Thanks.
Adobe had better get their shit together. Smartphones and dumbphones alike have become quite powerful and we have yet to see a good mobile version of Flash. I wonder if Macromedia was still involved would it have happened sooner?
Anyone remember back when AT&T and Apple were telling us that they delivered the "Full Web" unlike samart phones on those other cariers? Now we're down to, "you don't need youtube, there is an app for that, you don't need interactive webcontent, there's an app for that, you don't need porn, there's... oh, no wait, you don't need porn."
