iPhone 4G: proof
Well what do you know about this? With all those rumors flying around that the iPhone 4G we'd spotted was no more than a Japanese knock-off of an Apple product, it was starting to look like this thing was too good to be true. That is until one of the Engadget editors spotted what seems to be solid proof that this is -- in fact -- the next iPhone. If you'll recall, the night before the iPad was revealed, we had leaked shots of the device from what appeared to be an Apple test lab. Upon further inspection of these pictures today, the aforementioned editor discovered that the new iPhone 4G we've just gotten photos of is actually sitting on the table beside the iPad prototype! Imagine how blown our minds were when we realized we have had a photo of the next iPhone for months! As you can see in the pic above, the left side of the new device is clearly visible on this table in the upper right hand corner, and since we believe that these photos come directly from an Apple testbed, it's hard to deny that the phone you've just seen is in fact the real deal. Not only that, but we suspect that the device on the tablet itself is also a version of the new phone (you can see what looks like aluminum along the bottom) which seems to be housed in some type of iPhone 3G-like case.
Additionally, a source -- who confirms this is the next Apple iPhone -- also tells us that the device apparently does have a higher res screen on-board, a front-facing camera, a higher resolution camera with flash, and takes MicroSIM cards (that's the little "button" around the side you see in the Twitpic which is floating around the internet). We're working on uncovering more info, but right now you can take a look at the proof above for yourself, and in the gallery below.
Note: The device we're talking about can be clearly seen in the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE PHOTO, you know, with the arrow pointing to it.
Update: A Mac Rumors forum member has just posted pictures from Chinese site WeiPhone of what appears to be the guts of this device. These images line up with what we know right now. We've added a gallery of the shots below.
Update 2: In response to commenters and tipsters questioning the differences between the Twitpic and WeiPhone pics and the "San Jose" photos; these are likely handmade demo units, therefore there will be minor differences between them such as the screws appearing and then not appearing. We believe the models which will roll off of the production lines in China will look like these devices, likely with some minor physical tweaks, but they will look like these phones. Other major design decisions are already set in stone, such as the rumored glass back, which is present on both of these devices (Daring Fireball's John Gruber mentions them here). Yes, there are very minor discrepancies between these photos, but you need to understand they are from a very small pool of hand-built tester units. It is incredibly likely that the next version of the iPhone will look like the photos you see in the gallery below, and we certainly wouldn't claim that if we didn't have good reason to believe it.
Update 3: Gruber has expanded on the info concerning a glass backing for these new devices, and he's dug up a 2006 Apple patent application on a ceramic enclosure for handheld devices which is also (ding ding ding), radio transparent.

Not very impressive device, not up to Apple's standards.
Most likely a simple prototype and nothing else in order to get the OS and the functionality right.
There is a lot of competition these days from Android, their device has to be better than the 3GS not worse.

looks & feels like sony ericsson
@Bookmark I was thinking that, bit like a Sony Ericsson T610!
Anyone think this could be the phone that got lost by that FoxConn worker?
@ReeceAkhtar1 nah he was in china when he lost it.
I hope everyone knows, the glass back is also touch sensitive. The phone will be easier to use in one handed operation.
@Lubricant How do you know?
If it's the same size as the current iPhone, where's the big advantage?
Front facing camera? Phones have that since 3 years ago.
5 Mpix on the back? Many phones have that too
LED flash? Idem
480x320 screen? Come on, all phones have 800x480 now!
Do you really consider browsing pages, reading books on a 3.5" screen? Have you ever tried a 4.3"?
What's with all the white squares? If by the device is "clearly visible on this table in the upper right hand corner," you mean "it's blurry as fuck but we can tell it's an iPhone now that we have seen these other pics because at first glance we couldn't tell it apart really" then yes, you're right.
Seriously, if I hadn't seen the recent 4G pics I wouldn't have seen the upper right hand corner and made a big deal out of it at all. So I wouldn't say "clearly" because this is a poorly taken photo. Probably an iPhone was used. hahaha
But for real, I hope the 4G is at least on par with phones from 2009, because I'm tired of waiting for an iPhone and then being disappointed. I need one and have yet to find an excuse to get one, the 4G may change my mind finally.
Can a fluent Photoshop user please use their innate abilities and de-blur that photo?
I believe there's a function in Photoshop where you can trace the blur line and 're-stack' the image into a clearer/sharper image.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Perhaps someone has pointed this out, but the logo on the back of the device in the 7 in 1 picture is decidedly not an Apple logo.
I can hear it already.... "It's GORGEOUS.... AMAZING... BEYOOOTIFUL.... MAGICAL...."
Where's the SIM tray?
It seems gizmodo bit the bullet and bought it.
Looks pretty legit to me.
BREAKING: Gizmodo has broken its silence and it turns out that they were keeping mum intentionally. It seems they wanted to reveal this leak first but Engadget bested them and got the pics out first.
They have some videos too. Take a look. (Did they really pay the $10000 Josh was talking about?)
Now that tells us not to doubt Engadget again when they say they're so confident.
http://gizmodo.com/5520164/
Gizmodo just bought the prototype and showing it in highres and video.
Somebody getting sued here!
Just a thought - if the photo is indeed a shot of the 4th iPhone, isn't there a chance that the clamped down iPad is in fact some sort of 2nd generation test model? That might explain the apparent front-facing camera on it, and why it's still locked in that case.
The Engadget editors seem pretty confident that they have proof here - I'm guessing they have more information that they're not publishing to backup the claim (to protect their source).
@jonnyjedi
Dude! The secret is out. Gizmodo just showed it in painful detail. Unless Jobs kills the release of a new iphone this summer out of spite this is what we're getting.
IT'S JESUS
So... um... http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone
If you see buttons they blew it.
your photo galleries never ever work for me
@loriensleafs
Do you see the first photo, but then can't get any of the others to load? Same thing happens to me and I'm not sure why. Even using different browsers doesn't fix the problem.
Oh, BTW, kudos to Jobsy for sneaking something like this out just as Microsoft tries to introduce a new phone. Marketing win.
the phone is not even released and we get to see the internals... i wont be tuning in for the liveblog from the apple keynote this time...
Gizmo's got the video?!
And now everyone calling it Ugly is going to praise the minimal and beautiful design by Apple. Apple really has some magical aspirational value attached to its brand.
So if this is an iPhone 4G, where is the 4G coming from? AT&T does not currently have 4G and won't for some time. I am confused as to what benfit 4G capability on a phone where 4G is not present would be. Maybe if this were coming to Sprint and WiMax it would definitely compete with the EVO 4G.
@StivX
4G in this case is simply a reference to the generation of the phone hardware itself, not the networks it might support.
@Sonic Death Monkey
Exactly one of the reasons I posted this. It is misleading. There is no 4G capability for the iPhone. It is simply OS 4. However cool that is, it is not 4G and should not be touted as such when a real 4G (standard) exists.
well it's the next iphone.quite an achievement if I had to say.
Whilst this is most likely a RC, i'd be disappointed if the final products looks like this. i was certainly hoping for a larger screen. The look of the current 3g/3gs is good - light-years better than this. The form factor, with typical square edges feels less comfortable when inside the pocked than the tapered edges (even if the phone is slimmer) to me.
If this is the actual finished product, i will get the HTC Evo 4G for sure. It's a shame as i love the OS.
I love how all the APPLE boys were all saying "OMG ITS NOT REAL APPLE DOESN'T DESIGN STUFF LIKE THIS!".."APPLE WOULDN'T ADD A GLASS BACK TO A PHONE BECAUSE ITS NOT WHAT THEY DO!"...etc...etc....
Unless you work at apple OR are designing the next Apple product, you don't know jack.
With that being said, phone looks great IMO and i cant wait to see a spec sheet.
Probably WAY too far down for anyone to ever read this, but... did anyone else notice like 4-5 lines of text in that notification window on the iPhone in the foreground? The iPhone 3Gs screen res isn't anywhere near tight enough to display text that small.
New screen... check!
Apple succeeded -- in making their phone even more boring looking
Leave it to some field tester to get drunk at a bar and forget his (unreleased) iPhone 4g. It was camo’d to look like an iPhone 3Gs, but someone knew better… click here to check out its features, what’s new and what has changed… http://www.lionsdenu.com/the-new-iphone-was-found-lost-at-a-bar/
these blurry pics of an iphone in a case is your proof? Gonna have to do better than that!
"with Flash"?
Two chances there, mate.
Even better! My phone company has just confirmed that the new iPhone will be coming out! As we were near the end of our contracts, they said we were allowed to renew now and get the new phones within the next 4 / 5 months! (whilst having the next few months at no charge) :)
A full transcript of what happened to the employee who lost the prototype: http://blog.itag.com/264/the-iphone-4g-leaked-someones-in-big-trouble/
Well, as expected, Hitler's not happy about this...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Srrp48On9ZM
To me this seems like it could be a publicity stunt. http://blog.itag.com/266/iphonegate/
IPhone 4G to have 960x640 pixels on that tiny 3.5" screen? 360 pixels per inch? No other phone has more than 250 (makes no sense).
i like this version of iphone.

I have joined here like every other site i will be joining over the weekend. I can confirm even thou not many people know much about the new IPHONE 4G and what type of design apple have come up with. Everyone is just sitting waiting to see and just coming up with that many designs hopeing i think its the one they like to see on the market. Well the wait is over and it will be up for sale on MONDAY 7TH JUNE 2010. I can tell you that because I am in fact PROMTING THE IPHONE AS FROM THIS WEEKEND. I have been informed by my suppliers that they have the new APPLE IPHONE 4G 32GB UP FOR GRABS and I will be selling the product (taking orders) AS FROM THIS MONDAY. Suppliers names I can not supply but a price as now been confirmed and also accepted by me. some of the pics are not the same but we are still trying to confirm a couple of details. The only thing i can say at this time is watch the web and check emails. The emails going out could come under spam because of the quantity but if the suject spells out IPHONE 4G or similar look at it cause it is a promotion and possible 90% from me.
Just to clear things up its NOT a 4G phone
