Acer set to launch AMD-based Aspire One 521 netbook?
Acer hasn't gotten official with this one just yet, but Macles has turned up some pictures of an as yet unannounced Acer Aspire One 521 netbook, and some purported details on it. The biggest of those is that the netbook apparently packs a 1.2GHz AMD V105 processor -- which would be a first for the Aspire One line -- along with some ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics, and AMD's M880G chipset, among some other standard netbook fare. As you can see, it also sports a fairly eye-catching design, including a large, chrome-plated logo atop an nicely understated background on the lid, although things are decidedly closer to previous Aspire Ones once you pop it open. Unfortunately, the two big details not leaked are a price and release date -- here's hoping Acer can fill those in sooner rather than later.

More eye catching without the "fancy" designs.... Nice specs though.
Then it will suck because AMD is crap nowadays.
@CannedCorn Queequeg shall pierce thee with his harpoon.
@CannedCorn AMD is not crap. They used to suck, may be half a decade ago, but not anymore. Take a look at the Eee PC 1201T reviews out there, this one for example - http://gadgetmix.com/index/asus-eee-1201t-review/
..which is clearly more powerful than any Atom CPU out there. Do, your research next time. k?
@iluvms - their mobile CPUs suck, period. So what if it does have a little more processing power compared - the disproportional rise in energy demand (and thus, heat) makes this more than worthless.
Netbooks are ultraportable computers - if you cut their battery life in half by using an AMD processor, they simply become useless.
apple going to AMD , Acer going to AMD
what's going on? did AMD become magical to?
@sajd4000
Things changed when they merged with ATI. Now both ATI and AMD are doing some very interesting things.
@sajd4000
people are tired of intel GMA, and no one wants to pay the extra $$ for ION
This is a Netbook, so if it costs much more than $350 it's an automatic fail.
A $500 netbook is called a "laptop", and it better have more capabilities than what I am willing to live without in a netbook format.
@Hazdaz Some people are willing to spend over $800 for cellphone parts inside a big screen case, so clearly there is a market.
BIGGER PRODUCT MAKE AND MODEL ON EXTERIOR PLEASE! IT'S TOO SMALL TO READ.
pixe qi screen? atom MID?
when will acer release them?
This looks like it's got potential as a cheaper alternative to an ion netbook which are wayy too expensive for the advantage., also it's got guaranteed shit battery life
Finally here is an AMD K10 netbook. But where is the dual core version?!
AMD laptop chips suck. end of story.
@Streetfights
+1
AMD really needs to compete seriously with Intel, their laptop processors are still 65nm technology and still take up way too much power.
@Peytral AMD is launching 45nm dual/tri/quad cores on the Danube platform next month and they will be on 32nm early next year with Llano, the same time Intel launches Sandy Bridge. Plus this new AMD is a 45nm that goes against Atom. So they are not behind at all.
@Peytral AMD has had no problem holding its own in the low to midrange processor range. I've been very happy with the power/performance ratio of the dual-core low power AMD Neo in my Dell Zino HD.
@Streetfights And don't forget that low-midrange ATI GPUs mop the floor with their Intel and Nvidia equivalents.
@Ducman69
Oh ok. the Neo in your Zino HD is good, but the Zino HD is a...*drumroll please*...SFF desktop!
All I'm saying is that the AMD procs in laptops *right now* cannot compete with the Intels, mostly in terms of power efficiency, but in raw power at the top end as well. I love their desktop cpus and their great value, however I just wouldn't buy one in a laptop at this point in time. However, if sub-par battery life is your main prerogative, then by all means go for it. I'm not an AMD-hater, just a realist.
WTF happen to ultraportables ie netbook size with notebook internals how about a shift to those
Nice to see AMD gaining some ground...we need more competition in this market. That design on the cover looks pretty sick, too.
It's about time.
looks 100x better than my first gen A110
1.2Ghz?
Why is processor power decreasing?
Why are prices increasing?
Wait, somethings not right.
@JakeInDC
Actually, a 1.2GHz AMD K10-based CPU could be faster than the Atom at 1.66GHz.
Atom is an in-order, 2-issue design; K10 is 3-issue and out-of-order.
Not to mention that the GPU on this will mop the floor with Atom. Flash HD should run great, and you will probably even be able to play WoW or older games with lower detail settings. This is more comparable to an ION-based system than it is to a regular Intel-GPU netbook.
@JakeInDC
One day people will understand that Clock speed on different chips are not a direct measure of performance. Different architectures mean different performance per clock cycle.
good to see more variety in the netbook processor area. and to those who think amd suck u reaaly dont know what u are talking about
Amd not good for netbook/laptop = overheat !!!
If this is based on the K10 architecture, wouldn't this be more akin to a single core CULV processor from Intel than the Atom?
The V-series is K8 based, not K10 based. Think more along the lines of the Athlon Neo's we've been seeing for performance. The first gen Athlon 64's bottomed out at 1.8 GHz, so this is clocked 800MHz lower than the 2800+.
@nismotigerwvu AFAIK, V105 is based on K10 and has DDR3 mem controller.
Sorry typo, 600MHz slower. If someone can dig up a review on the 1.0 GHz Athlon 64 1500+, which apparently was only used in one model blade server, we can have a pretty idea of what this will be able to do.
Please put this in the Lenovo X100 chassis. Thx!
