Apple's 4th-generation iPhone revealed
Well, we told you so. The fourth-generation iPhone prototype that leaked its way out into the world over the weekend has found its way to Gizmodo, and they've examined it exhaustively enough to prove that it's the real thing. Not only does it show up in iTunes, Xcode, and System Profiler, but it has different product identifiers than the 3G or 3GS, and it's packed with Apple-labeled components inside. Unfortunately, they couldn't get it to boot out of recovery mode, but a number of new features and changes are evident just by holding it. Obviously, it's thinner than the 3GS, with smaller internal components and a larger battery inside the metal frame. There's also a front-facing camera, a larger and better camera with a flash on the back, a higher-res display that's slightly smaller than the current models, a second mic for noise cancellation, and that new back, which Giz seems a bit confused about but we're fairly sure is glass or ceramic. It's also three grams heavier than a 3GS, with a 16 percent larger battery and the same new MicroSIM slot used in the iPad.
We're also told the phone was found running iPhone OS 4.0 but that it was remotely killed before Giz could actually see it, and that they can't get it to boot because it requires a bespoke build of the OS. We're assuming Apple's hot on the trail of this thing, so hit the source link while you can and check a couple more pics after the break.

Man, I've beend dismissing these rumors and refrained from reading them, then bam read about its authenticity on CNN. Publicity stunt or not, if this is coming out this year, I am so getting it.
I can imagine other phones losing some sales right now over this... lol
@onlymyrailgun Be careful how much "authenticity" or "credibility" you ascribe to CNN or any other such site. They often go off of what they hear from sites they think are credible, so if for the sake of argument engadget is full of crap on something, CNN is likely to be as well, too.
@ScifiSurfer
Well, nobody knows at this point anyway... right?? lol
I went straight to Gizmodo to check up on their posts and here too to see what the fuss is all about. Anyway, I'm refreshing my phone in a few months, so those new features are welcome to see.
@onlymyrailgun loosing sales cause of a brick that looks like ass? Shure. It's the american mobile market.
As a very happy owner of a 3GS, I'm now supposed to get excited over a slightly different shape and a better battery? Yes, the front facing camera is great, and who can't be happy with a smaller form factor, but what happened to the excitement around the possibility of a capacitative rear casing for un-obstructed scrolling/gesture input? I really hope Apple is holding back some creative new additions for the official announcement.
How about a photo with the device switched on displaying the "connect to iTunes" message? :o)
Apple has now send a letter to Gizmodo stating they want their iPhone 4G back! wahahah
Well that pretty much confirms the phone is real as hell...

You dropped the ball big time on this one Engadget. I followed this unfold closely over the weekend and you first were on right track then completely discredited the outing. You even put an update on your post "Is this it" declaring this iPhone a japanese fake and saying "good thing we didn't pay 10K for a KIRF" then bluntly removed that post as if it never happened as soon as you learned the iPhone was real. Then tried to beat Giz to the punch by quickly crafting a "proof" via images that made not much sense. I didn't study journalism or anything but the way this was handled and reported was just extremely poor. I lost my trust in your judgment you know?
I have a feeling this is not the actual design of the new iPhone, maybe the inside is, but the outside is just to put everyone on the wrong track in case it is seen in public..., in this case the entire world ;-)
It'd be pretty funny if this was just a publicity stunt and when Jobs reveals the new iPhone it doesn't look like this one at all.
This is def a prototype... there is no way apple will include all these features in one release. I believe we are looking at 3 different releases here!!! the up-coming one will only include the flash, which will be required with all their apps, hence making all previous versions completely obsolete.
YES! this is LEGENDARY! :D
i've always wanted the iPhone to look like this (the curved back sucked!)
and now it does! :D
i can't wait to get my hands on this baby...*cackles maniacally and rubs palms together while lightning streaks overhead*

As you all have speculated, a guy at Apple got the boot.

Someone is going to get their ass fired for this. And plus HOW THE HELL WE KNOW IF IT'S REAL. It's fake only dumb ass people will leak fake pictures just to make themselves famous and greedy APPLE more Famous.
A 27-year-old Apple software engineer has been outed as the unfortunate employee of the notoriously secretive company who left behind an iPhone prototype in a California beer garden.
When do we see this many comments about a post?
It seems it is always about Apple. If we don't want Palm to fail and we like the HTC Evo better ,why don't we get comments like this about Palm, HTC or Blackberry or something Instead of the iphone. I mean ya the iPhone is a good phone but whoa 23 pages of comments?
IT'S IPHONEGATE
The only thing that this whole 'iPhone-drama' did for me, is that I am thinking of MAYBE waiting before I buy my HTC Desire.
But what are the chances that the 4th Generation iPhone has this:
-(SUPER)AMOLED display, WVGA resolution or higher
-1GHz processor
-NEW USER INTERFACE
-5MP Camera, with flash
What, around 20%?
Sure, the resoltion bump is pretty sure, but AMOLED is not. 1GHz processor 50/50. They don't want the next iPhone to be as powerfull as the iPad probably.
5MP Camera with Flash could happen.
But in the end, the chance of a new user interface? Very small.. and I don't want to end up with that boring looking 'menu'. (aka a couple of pages with square icons)
Android FTW
@zI INFINITY Iz
Why no edit button on Engadget? -.-
I forgot to say: if they put a picture of Steve Jobs on the back of the new iPhone, I buy it without thinking :D
Some how I don't belive this is the consumer design. Maybe the new functioning is correct with front facing camera and flash but not the design. Who knows, I love anticipation though.
What happened was the designer was alound to take it home for testing but he decided to go to a bar instead.....
He left the phone on a chair and someone picked it up and asked if any one had lost i Iphone3GS no one answers so he kept it!
3hours later the designer came running into the bar looking for the phone he knew if he'd lost it he was screwed but he had lost it......
The man who found the iphoneHD/4G started selling it on ebay and the highest bidder was £5000 from the site called Gizmodo!
Gizmodo released the pictures which were REAL BELIEVE IT OR NOT and now Apple are DEAMDING THAT THERE IPHONE IS RETURNED IMMEDIALTY
Im so ashamed to be a Apple user right now! Arent they stupid???
I am waiting for all the apple fanboys to do a complete 180 on this thing. The first half of comments were them hating on it for being terrible, and now they are bending over backwards to say how awesome it is.
lawl.
It seems like apple wants there phone back

and

this does not impress me!
Haha id love to be at the phone designing meeting." Ok so as you know we've been using the same design for 3 years now. Each year the phone looks the same but gets a little thinner and rounded. So this year we keep the thin idea but instead of rounding the phone to fit comfortably in your hand we make it rectangular and have Sharp corners. Ohh yea but the phone still looks the same as past generations." Were they drunk? I'm an Android user so I don't care but this phone is UGLY
Why would I care about this when the EVO 4G is coming out in June?
Verizon????
This is a viral leak. OS 4.0 isn't that great of a difference. This is the year of the appearance upgrade and I must say that looking at it I am more inclined to get it than I was before.
obviously Apple needed to get some attention on the new iPhone before it's official launch... maybe they thought there was too much attention on other smart phones :D
4G looks good tough ;)
Anyone read the sun? Publicity stunt.
I know that not one will read this. but i just want to say what a bunch fo f*cktards all the people were that were suck jackasses when this leaked and swore it was fake. i legitimately despise you for trolling a blog to make yourself feel better.
If the display is going to be slightly smaller!
Im not buying it !! good thing I dont have to wait anymore!
now I can go for a Desire.....
Apple's new iPhone 4 is the biggest update of company yet for the handset and it will have you drooling. It is an snazzily slim phone. It has dual cameras, huge operating system update and video chat, among other things. Gadgets and Gizmos : http://www.gizmos360.com/
