It's like Dell's making up for lost time with smartphones: while "
Lightning" is the company's answer to Windows Phone extravagance, the Dell Thunder that's leaking out along side does up Android 2.1 with similar aplomb and a 4.1-inch WVGA OLED screen. There's a heavily custom Dell "Stage" UI on top, which seems much different (and classier) than what we've seen on the
Streak or
Aero. It apparently ties into Facebook and Twitter for social networking, and taps Swype for a touchscreen keyboard replacement, along with grabbing just a pinch of HTC's Sense good looks. Dell's document also claims this has Flash 10.1 for watching web videos, along with a mention of an "integrated web video Hulu app." We're not sure how that works, but hopefully it's everything we ever dreamed mobile Hulu could be. Under the hood we'd guess there's the same Snapdragon chip that's powering the Lightning, but we don't have specific specs. There is supposed to be an 8 megapixel camera, however, and the phone will be sold in AT&T and world-friendly HSDPA versions around Q4 of this year, with an LTE model to follow near the end of 2011. We can hardly wait.
"Thunder" and "Lightning" would make for an interesting side-by-side comparison of Windows Phone and Android, seeing how they are evenly matched hardware wise.
Wow im excited to see what the interface is like.
Probably wont exceed HTC Sense 2.1 but im still interested.
Also Killer Background; Im a sucker for anything blue!
Beautiful looking device - CHECK
4.1" screen - CHECK
OLED screen - CHECK
Android 2.1 - Check
Eat that iPhone 4G!
PS: I hope they do not dare to call it iPhone HD with a 3.5" screen XD.
@vcespon
Dell: FAIL
@jli5354 Have you heard about a company called Apple, that has been selling 1 - 2 million phones a month **without** physical keyboard?
Damn, Dell is just throwing one after another- carving out its smart phone- long awaited- niche. I guess it's good strategy; having many different styles for different tastes- but, personally, just waiting for that awesome Streak.
That and Microsoft Courier and I'm in productivity heaven.
Well, those and a Cintiq ;)
Now someone really needs to find a way to dual boot Android/WP7
Wow, I wonder how AT&T will find a way to screw up this impressive looking piece of android hardware?
* looks at my nexus one in shame *
OH DAMN
Now what do I do
EVO 4G VS DELL THUNDER ????
Engadget, I want a comparison. Dell really upped the ante on this one. Where have they been hiding their designers, these phones look awesome.
@Stone632 i want this too
@victorvelasco1
i do too, but have fun getting them...
Nice, but these Dell phones need some Verizon lovin'.
And, of course, all of these Dell revelations and the Droid Incredible have _nothing whatsoever_ to do with the _non-leak_ (promise!) of the new iPhone.
Right... Got it.
All leaks are welcome. If I know what devices will be on the market this year, I can plan better and decide which one to choose. I have been using a phone with a 3.8" screen for 2 years, no way I'm going to move to a smaller one.
The iPhone 4G leak, if this is the device they will show up this year, has helped me to save time and money. It's has the same hardware a a 2-year-old phone. They may try to convince fanboys that 960x640 on a 3.5" screen makes sense and i'ts better, but no one is making phones with so many pixels per inch, makes no sense. I'll always be able to read a book or browse a page better on a 4.1" or 4.3" screen.
That was no leak...
that was a Press Release.
Looks fantastic, but as others probably have said, no front camera?
@BoomHeadshot Streak still has one, so if the Android on iphone isn't out by then I'll just get a Streak5
I wonder if they stole that "Bokeh" wallpaper.
When can I have it?!
This looks like it has the same portrait slider as the the Lightning.
that UI looks looks wway better than anything i've seen so far. this is the best looking non-keyboard android phone i've seen.
FUCK Damn you AT&T for not even getting the X10. instead you get another DELL crappy phone. I'm getting really sick and tired of the way you keep getting phones that not even made by a phone company. I'M STILL WAITING FOR THE DESIRE OR X10. THIS IS STRIKE TWO. Strike Three I'm canceling my contract with you GUYS FOREVER. You're Pissing me off.
Bet I still won't be able to dial a call from my Bluetooth headset.
Impressive design! A bit thinner would have looked better.
Not to say that there aren't a few truly gorgeous boutique phones out there - usually in the $500+ price range - but in my experience, anything less than only looks gorgeous and glossy in virtual mockups, but once you get them in your hand and feel that marvelous fake-chrome weak plastic under your fingers it becomes clear why Apple is king or why podcasts were never called dellcasts or aerocasts, etc.
Its either this, or the lightning (essentially, its win7 mobile vs android)
This is just awesome. I look forward to owning a Dell again.
Mini 5 For the Win, Since Mini 5 have flash too I'm guessing hulu will be on there too
