iPad Camera Kit ships with USB headset and keyboard support
Reports are coming in that the iPad Camera Connection Kit has finally shown up on a couple buyer doorsteps, and that the pair of white dongles may actually have been worth the wait. While one is a simple SD card adapter that adds one-touch image and video import (including RAW, complete with EXIF data) to the iPad, the second provides a USB port with some exciting new functionality. TUAW reports one reader could type on an iPad via USB keyboard, and those rumors about USB audio were true, too: TidBITS was actually able to make a Skype call after connecting a USB headset. Before you get too excited, however, please note that the USB and SD image transfers are one-way, and not all peripherals are supported -- for instance, TidBITS' iPad sneezed at an external hard drive. Also, according to the Apple Store, Camera Connection Kit shipments are still two to three weeks out, so don't be surprised if it still takes some time to get yours. For now you can make do with the video after the break.

Why is it worth the wait again?
@furquanatique
because after being voluntarily wallet raped, you get back some functionality of what should have been included in the box fro only an additional $99
@AppleDrank
Seems like the editors haven't used PC's much, because if such limited additional functionality makes it "worth the wait", then you'd expect them to go gaga on PC features. Sellouts.
@furquanatique
LOL! $29, i dont want to be sensationalist like Giz..
But seriously anyone see the fact that the man has a 16GB card that costs $20, but yet Apple charger an extra $100 for 8 GB upgrade!
Hmm...
@furquanatique it is not!
Apple is playing the "professional" card, yet most DSLR's use CF (especially older ones).
@furquanatique:
So you need an adapter for functionality that should have been built-in in the first place, and then that adapter doesn't even provide full functionality because it only works one way.
Apple, and the people that buy iPads, are really pissing me off. I like my Apple products, but the iPad is just a joke and people buying them are blindly getting raped.
And like someone else pointed out, it truly is a rip-off that Apple is charging $100 for 8gb. That 8GB costs them pennies to a dollar more, yet they charge $100. So sad.
@AppleDrank
The kit is actually only $29. That's still far too much, but not as bad as $99.
@Jordan
So sorry I (and 500k other people) pissed you off. The iPad does exactly what I want it to... sure, it could be better and do more, but nothing is perfection. It's completely worth the 500 bucks to me.
@furquanatique
Anyone see a pattern here?
in the early days when Apple introduced a NEW type or product, they usually include suck little things for free.. like the 1st gen iPhone the dock was free...
Now all of a sudden they are going 1 step ahead and NOT including anything free...
@LAY
Yeah, it's funny. The people without the Ipad have a problem, the person with the Ipad doesn't
Can you tell me why that is? Why do all these people who can't buy an Ipad have so many problems with the device?
Can't you round up all these little kids and take them to a PSP thread or something?
@suicidebob
Have you ever read the short story
"The Emperor's New Clothes"
i dont want an iPad unless I get it for $99 or free...
Add support for iphone/ipod touch, and combine the 2 adapters into one and you have a deal
@furquanatique Mommy wow! Im a real computer now!
@AppleDrank
Exactly. Apple couldn't care less about consumers like you.
Is that why you're so bitter?
@AppleDrank
Yeah, I don't want a porsche until I can get one for 5k or free.
@suicidebob
"Yeah, it's funny. The people without the Ipad have a problem, the person with the Ipad doesn't"
So the people with iPads whom speak of how ridiculous it is to pay this much just to put pictures on this...after being told how standard stuff like USB was a "geek" thing ... just totally dont exist? Not to mention the people complaining of the heat issues and wi-fi issues?
"Can you tell me why that is? Why do all these people who can't buy an Ipad have so many problems with the device?"
Classic swipe #5642: Claim all dissenting opinions of X device are just from people "who cant afford one". Imply that personal wealth is equal to intelligence.
@DTJ
I'd kind of expect my Porsche to come with a standard turbo activator and not have to buy a special adapter to make it work though.
I mean that is what I'm paying the extra money - quailty and ease of use, right?
@suicidebob
I've got an iPad and while neat, it does make my laptop seem like a super device. My daughter's laptop ($499 Win 7) can do a million things the iPad can't and is just about as easy to carry around and a LOT easier to do work on. Given the choice, I'll take the laptop with me.
the iPad will go on eBay soon. I've had it laying around here for weeks and we really can't find it's place in the long term.
@furquanatique
"If they make you pay more for some basic features that should have been from the start, THEY BLEW IT" and if you pay more then you BLOW THEM? JOBS?
@LAY
People are still complaining about 3G issues with the Nexus One.
Move on with your life!
@AppleDrank Probably not getting the iPad then, maybe this version in a couple of years (for $99)
@MarkAnderson
You never bought a Porsche then Mark?
If you had you would know they would charge $1k-$4k for a custom / metallic colour.
You can easily spend $20K on upgrades for the standard model.
What was your point again?
@suicidebob
Well if they are, can we not assume, using your logic, that those are just people that cant afford one?
@AppleDrank
Don't be surprised if the next ipad os update takes out the extra usb functionality.
@LAY I don't think it's a personal swipe, I think this whole iPad thing is the same old gadget-blog-comment-nerd story. (that's not a swipe, either. If you're reading or writing here, you're a comment nerd. I accept it and so should you.)
The biggest negatives come from people who have never touched the device. The guy who says the HP slate sucks has probably never touched one. The guy who says the JooJoo sucks has defiantly never touched one. The guy trashing the iPad probably doesn’t' use one either.
For me, the iPad is not a computer. It's a tablet. That's a different animal. I don't want my tablet to run Windows or OSX. I don't want it to have a complex file system or run Photoshop and Vectorworks. I want my tablet to read the news, check wikipedia on the couch while I'm watching the History Channel, and do some light typing on the plane. And the iPad beats a laptop in every one of those activities. If you see no use for an iPad, don't buy one. It's a pretty easy solution.
Getting all worked up about a product you are never going to buy or use is a waste of everyone's time and energy. Move on.
If I don't like purple, I don't run up to every kid and tell him to throw out his box of Crayolas. I just don't use the purple one...
@d0mth0ma5
Actuall, mr nub. thats how I bought my iPhone..
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FA501LL/A
$149
as a matter of fact I bought 3 of them and 1 is still under Apple care... you just have to be patient and not a nub that will pay $499 for a piece of well designed crap.
@LAY
What are you on about?
Carry on being the people's champ, dude!
Go carry the torch for everyone who has a problem with their tech product!
@furquanatique
lol I think it just looks funny with that thing sticking out like that.
@Jordan I know its sad, but who is making millions of dollars because of it?
@abedinthehouse
That's what she said.
@DTJ Well worth $500 to do sod all? Man you've got too much money. No USB ports? WTF? Even my 2 year old garbage Samsung phone can cope with USB and you'd happily fork over a monkey so you can sit on your couch and browse the internet.... Hold on my daughter's netbook which cost $160 does that. And it only costs $20 for a 3g dongle to use mobile broadband. And its got 160gb hard drive. And a keyboard. And guess what it even manages to plug in to my 42 inch tv so you can forget the larger screen argument too. And I can use Skype. All for $180. And before you Apple fanboys (who really would buy a dog turd if it had an Apple logo on it and still claim it was as important as the second coming of Jesus Christ) complain about why would you want to be able to add things like cameras and external hard drives the answer is: because we want to. when I buy something I want to be able to what ever I want, including changing the OS if I chose. The day we learnt that Apple are such p***ies that they wont let you use someone else's software on their new phone showed how truly pathetic they are. I honestly believe they use subliminal messaging in their equipment somehow as I can't think of another reason why people a) defend Steve Mobs no matter what he says or does. B) Will buy anything and everything Apple makes regardless of how useful if might actually be. And c) will never ever say anything bad about them.
@suicidebob the people that didn't buy it find it to be flawed...and you spin it to that? nice. Keep the distortion field going strong...
@oliver0907
You have a daughter? I truly fear for her with that rage of yours.
@AppleDrank
You didn't pay 149$ of your iphone. You paid over 600$ for it.
I wonder if ipad will deteriorate iphone image, as it shows how bad value for money it is. As daft ipad is, it shows how how much worse the markup in iphones is, as it has more expensive hardware with about same price.
@furquanatique
SO let me get this straight. It's a crime for people to buy the iPad now?
It's pissing you guys off so much so the rest of us should just stop?
How freaking arrogant do you guys have to be?
Absolutely ridiculous.
@suicidebob
Nope. I can only afford a Boxster and I think the Jaguar XF is a better car for that kind of money so that's what I'm going for.
That aside, a custom paint job is an extra. A turbo activator is standard.
Next bad analogy pls.
@AppleDrank Why does Apple think EXTRA ACCESSORIES = good design?? lol
@DTJ I have 3 kids which means I can't justify buying anything from Apple. Name one thing any Apple product can do that another product from another company can't? And for less money.
@oliver0907
"No USB? Really. The reason this isn't on is because Apple don't want people fucking around with the OS"
Every iPad comes with a USB--> dock connector cable. So your "explanation" for why it has no USB port is absurd. As mentioned, it's because they don't want to have to support every USB warming blanket or nerf rocket launcher on the market.
It's not a netbook, it's not meant to be a full computer, it does what most people spend 95% of their time on a computer doing, and it does it extremely well. If you think a netbook web browsing experience is equal to or better than an iPad, I'd like what you are smoking, please.
@TheLondonExchange
Nope, it's not a crime. Yes, it does bug us. As long as there are people who will apologize for every shortcoming of the iPad, there will be those of us who will call them out on it.
Frankly, it just makes you all that much easier to spot.
@nothingreal
I'm just going to start off with this:"What's next for you?.. off to the Ferrari message boards to call everyone an idiot because your own a Camry? ..Maybe a quick stop off at a Playstation forum to crash a Final Fantasy thread because you're an Xbox guy?"
ENGADGET ISN'T AN APPLE FORUM! It's a general gadget blog. When gadget lovers see a device that isn't up to par, and a large fan base that thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread and will loudly tell you again and again that it is despite all evidence, they tend to get a little annoyed.
@jimmylittle
"If I don't like purple, I don't run up to every kid and tell him to throw out his box of Crayolas. I just don't use the purple one..."
Let me translate that analogy. I agree with your sentiment that everyone should just use what he/she likes and not harp on others choices. However, that never seems to stop the Apple apologists from coming into other articles and shouting how a product will never measure up to Apple's equivalent.
Translation: "If I don't like the iPad, I don't run up to every guy and tell him to throw out all his Apple products. I just don't use the iPad..."
Nobody is doing this. Sentiment = correct. Analogy fail.
@cherryboom
LOL. There are few things funnier than a Applite volunteering to get violated like a faithful sheep. You're an idiot.
@furquanatique Simply because when it comes to usability the ipad leaves everything else in the dust. Of that is not something geeks or employees of companies that continue to produce products with great specs but poor usability will ever understand. Know why they say Apple has poor competitors? Because the competition has the typical simple minded geek mentality so pervasive on tech sites like this - I am refering to posters.
@Mike10010100 I love you and Lay. Great posts.
I'm sorry, as great as the iPad has turned out, it's still a first gen apple product. ANY technophile knows that it will come with half the specs of the 2nd or 3rd gen.
@furquanatique The Camera Connection Kit seems to work well and as expected. Apple needs to update its online documentation quickly, and better explain how to use or enable automatic iPhoto syncing via iTunes. For $29, the kit is quite a deal.
-- Oh appple, you could have just put this as an internal device on your magical iPad, why do it "each sold separately?" Ipad reactions.. http://j.mp/apple-tablet-experience
@AppleDrank Well first you can't add because last time I checked the difference between 16 and 32 was 16 and the difference between 32 and 64 is 32. So where did you get Apple charging $100 for 8gigs more? Last but not least the drives in ipads are flash so that's why it's in increments of 16, 32, 64. Do some reasearch.
@AppleDrank "Page not found" - lovely. I'll assume that it was meant to be a link to an older iPhone/refurb which you bought for $149 (slightly more than the $99). As for being a "nub" I've been around long enough, I'm just a bit more measured than you.
@cherryboom
when you find a use of a tablet PC for 12 straight hours (good luck holding it for that long btw :P) without going near a power supply ill be amazed, plus any real job you want to do theres no way you can do it as the Ipad doesnt have the capability.
you also seem to be confused, the ipad isnt a top quality product as it is, the fact you have to buy add ons for it to make it even similar to a basic netbook shows this.
@suicidebob
this isnt an apple site, this is a tech site, if there is a staggeringly inferior product, then people will point it out :)
Its not that i *cant* buy an ipad, but why the hell would i want to? i could buy a pretty good laptop with that money, something that can do the ipads job but MUCH better
@DTJ
steve jobs advertised it as the bridge between the iphone and a netbook, yet its not even similar to a low end netbook.
it genuinley is more and more like an iphone
actually, thats a lie, at least the iphone had a camera built in for christs sake! XD
@jimmylittle
Couldn't you just open up a netbook/laptop and get the same functionality? Or you're just too lazy to flip a lid and press down on keys?
