Reports are coming in that the
iPad Camera Connection Kit has finally shown up on a couple buyer doorsteps, and that the pair of white dongles may actually have been
worth the wait. While one is a simple SD card adapter that adds one-touch image and video import (including RAW, complete with EXIF data) to the iPad, the second provides a USB port with some exciting new functionality.
TUAW reports one reader could type on an iPad via USB keyboard, and those
rumors about USB audio were true, too:
TidBITS was actually able to make a Skype call after connecting a USB headset. Before you get too excited, however, please note that the USB and SD image transfers are one-way, and not all peripherals are supported -- for instance,
TidBITS' iPad sneezed at an external hard drive. Also, according to the Apple Store, Camera Connection Kit shipments are still two to three weeks out, so don't be surprised if it still takes some time to get yours. For now you can make do with the video after the break.
@eka You are so smart then why do you even bother reading about it.
Why bother with these adapters anyway. There are plenty of other ways of getting photos on to your iPad... wirelessly via a computer of course.. ok, let's say you don't own a computer, or maybe you're on vacation, but my 16Gig card fills FAST when I'm on vacation and that's a LOT of space on my iPad.
Also, storing them on the iPad to empty your camera card isn't that great an idea. Unless you immediately upload them to web storage as well.
Hmmm... maybe the adapter IS a good idea after all! I'm on it.....
my goodness look at all these apple drones. stop being apologists and stop being butthurt at all the negative comments about your precious ipad. it definitely has its shortcomings and there is nobody to blame but apple. why are you guys defending them to the death? apple doesn't give a damn about you. stop acting like they love you or something. they don't love you, just your money.
@tegz "why are you guys defending them to the death? apple doesn't give a damn about you"
I am defending my choice. Not Apple. What are you defending? Look at your posts "apple sackriders", "sheep", "dumb company", "dumb design". These are your words - and this is called bashing. Not making a valid point about not liking Apple, but bashing.
And then you come with comments on another post like this:
"the winmo bashing on here is pathetic."
Lol.
@Atkins
He's just another troll. You can usually tell right away when they attempt to come off as unbiased, and are just offering their better informed, wiser opinion. It usually quickly devolves into personal attacks. Jealousy & envy are all they've got, so they resort to name calling. All the while not realizing they are far more pathetic & ignorant than the people they deride for being 'pathetic & ignorant' in their opinion.
@tegz
Right on man...It's like they were brainwashed into seeing it as "awesome" rather than what it really is...A rip off!!...One guy tried defending the Ipad by saying you can't read a netbook in landscape mode?? Are you serious? Thats the selling point that got you? $500 for something already inferior to a year old netbook...It just blows me mind man!! LOL
All you need now are usb port add ons, then some type of lap keyboard add on, and you almost have a notebook....
@Hydra no, you have a netbook.
I love how we're getting excited because an overpriced accessory for the iPad that gives functionality that should have came built into the unit from the beginning has some unannounced functionality that STILL should have been included with the damn thing to begin with.
I'm done with your fucking people. Seriously, I'm speechless. You epitomize all that I hate about Apple products. Not Engadget, since they're just reporting on it, but anybody who's trying to justify this or give Apple credit for it. You make absolutely no sense.
@kenny goo Why do you assume the iPad would be the same price if the SD slot was inside? Maybe the price would be $530? In this case isn't it a good idea to have it separately for those who don't need it?
@kenny goo
I couldn't agree more! I guess there's 500,000 suckers born every couple of months! LOL
@Atkins
Right, because the $500 asking price on a 16GB iPad is *totally* worth it. And I completely forgot how much an SD card slot costs. It's not like there's one on just about every digital camera, laptop, and netbook out there or anything.
@kenny goo yep and I totally want a stupid SD card adapter hanging off my iPad 24/7. You know what, I think you should go work for apple, you can tell them how to fit the SD card reader in there for them. Draw a few schematics or something, I'm sure they would love your help (sarcasm). Why the hell should I care about an SD card when I can sync wirelessly from my computer? Oh because it's SO DIFFICULT to go home and sync to my computer FIRST, OMG that takes way too much time. Fuck apple for wasting 10 minutes of my life.
@enjourni
In case you were wondering, you're one of the people I was referring to. The people who actually know a thing or two about computers, yet still find a way to defend Apple blatently ripping their consumers off. The people who make absolutely no sense and frustrate me to no end.
News flash: you're not the only fucking person in the world who wants a tablet, and if you have no use for an SD card reader you are by far in the minority. There are millions of SD card reading digital cameras out there. It would be great to pop one out out of your camera and view photos right then and their on your iPad, then be able to edit or send or post or do whatever you want with them.
Completely putting aside the fact that it's also a small, easily portable storage medium for just about anything that fits flush with and can stay inside of the unit. Cause ya know, an SD card doesn't have the potential to double the storage of the over priced and under speced iPad or anything. Jackass...
Hopefully we can opt for a jailbreak version and use the USB dongle for a camera :-)
can anyone see the design flaw here. So i am using the Ipad and and trying to attach my webcam but cant as the connector with the USB wire inside it is hitting against my crotch when i try to hold it in my hand! I think i can only put in flat on the table and use it! :P what a rip off!
Well I can give my opinion and really not be biased...Although I have been a die hard PC/Windows User since my 486 I also love gadgets and I have an Ipod Touch and really like it...And I really do the the Iphone and it's functionality although I don't own one...I hate to say it but man what a joke the Ipad has become! I was interested in it quite a bit when I first heard about it(after all it is a gadget!) Seriously they are so tight that you don't get compatibility with Ipods or Iphones? No usb built in? And if you want only one usb you will have to pay for it? Oh and it only does 1 way transfers? If the battery goes bad you will have to pay another $99 on top of the $500 investment and they will send you a used one? Are you serious? What does it do that a netbook or even a macbook can't? After all the research I've done I can't figure out what the logical reasoning would be to buy one?(of course other than for status I guess) I feel sorry for anyone who ordered it and was really excited to get it just to find out it only does about a fifth of what any random netbook can do..Its so disappointing! Of course thats only my opinion!
@jeep447
Another person telling me how useless an iPad is. Keep convincing yourself. Do not buy an iPad. As for me, I laugh when you compare an iPad to a netbook. The screen on a netbook is a joke compared to an iPad. You know- LED backlighting. Also, reading ebooks on a netbook is possible, but compared to an iPad, the experience is pathetic.
@dio777
Well I can't blame ya....I'd be all huffy and stuff too if old Cupertino suckered me out of $500 plus tax! LOL I can see you in a corner with your Ipad and a snot bubble coming out of your nose trying to convince yourself it was worth it! Frankly I could care less if you hold your breath and stomp your feet...After all I am entitled to my opinion! And my opinion is based on facts...You're just a fanboy that got duped - Congratulations! Enjoy your fancy led screen though!
@jeep447
Your opinion is based on facts? LOL! Enjoy your netbook, don't squint too hard!
@dio777
You should maybe reach out to the other Ipad owners in your community..have meetings to talk about the screen in public places.. And I'd say you're right on with your instinct to wear that cardigan, throw caution to the wind ..It's very possible you could find a life long friend, or who knows maybe even a life partner out of it!
@jeep447
Cardigans? Life long friend? You got me, I have no idea what you are talking about. Just make sure you have all your software updated on your netbook and watch out for the malware. Keep your security patches up to date and go forward my friend. The future is yours. And if you ever decide to read a PDF or ebook on that groovy netbook, just be careful not to get a neck pinch turning your head to the side trying to read in portrait.
@dio777
Let's see....Have the unbelievable ability to read in lanscape.....or....be able to do everything you can't at half the price? Gee let me think on that one...But boy I sure would look cool with and Ipad while I'm reading in landscape on the super neato screen!! Man that's a toughy!! I see now how you ended up on the Ipad...I mean landscape!!! I can't believe I forgot you can turn it sideways!!! I mean sideways reading in 2010!! Who would of thunk it! WOW!!! LANDSCAPE MAN!!
I LOVE MY IPAD. I LOVE MY DROID. I LOVE MY PC, PS3, AND WII. I LOVE YOU ALL. SHOW ME SOME LOVE YOU PEOPLE WIH TOO MUCH TIME.
@jkwakopo i love your $.
This is potentially great. By giving it a USB adapter that takes more things than just a camera they have acknowledged the iPad as something more than just a big iPod.
But hey, this kit is not for emptying your DSLR flash memory filled with RAW images. Emptying one 32GB card is potentially gonna fill up most of the iPad, and a much better investment would be more flash cards to your camera.
But the option to import it, to have a quick look, sort out bad photos, send some work samples directly from the iPad is great!
I think one goal with iPad should be to make sure you can run it without a secondary computer, no syncing, no file managing from your computer to your iPad. To have your iPad as your main computer. I think it would make sense for a lot of people.
I think this USB connection thing in a way is a sign that Apple wants the iPad to be more independent, and that's great!
ahhh... finally !! an apple netbook for the price of 2 netbooks.
@phearme
Minus all the functionality of a netbook of course!
Sorry for the regular English
Google translator = (
The IPAD does not have these connection ports because of creative idea is a device for wireless data transfer:

Look, anyone with half a brain knows how Apple operates. You agree to it when you buy their crap, so dont complain now. You will be nickle and dimed to death a million ways post sale until apple tells you to buy the next ridiculous thing, and the 'upgrade' addon cycle starts anew.
@syph007
Still better and cheaper and more rewarding than going the Microsoft route.
@Joao Cagao
Cheaper??? Please explain how a $500 Pad that doesn't even have a usb port is cheaper than going with microsoft? Again my $250 little netbook can do thousands of things the Ipad can't... It's like when they took your money the brainwashed you into thinking its sooo much better than a computer! I love it!! It slays me!! Muhahahaha
@Joao Cagao errm ok you need to justify that....my 16.4" vaio with windows 7 x64 has core i5, express card/34, firewire 400, 3xUSB, eSATA, full 1080p, tons more software than mac has available, removable battery, doesn't overheat....and cost less than the equivalent macbook pro.
Should have had a USB port from the get go. oh well. i wouldn't ever buy anything Apple. and this is why. charging me extra and expecting me to be grateful for something that has come standard on computers for more than 10 years.
