Samsung's 1TB / 2TB external Story hard drive goes the USB 3.0 route
It was inevitable, really. Samsung's not-so-storied Story hard drive first took the leap to eSATA in November of last year, and for those always in need of the latest and / or greatest, now this very drive has made the logical leap to SuperSpeed. Introduced today as the fastest Story of all time, there's actually not much else that's changed besides the addition of a USB 3.0 socket -- the enclosure's the same, the capacity choices are the same (1TB or 2TB), and it's still unlikely to truly solve all of your problems in one fell swoop. That said, the removal of eSATA here may be a detractor for some, but we're told that the USB 2.0 + eSATA version will still be around in some parts of the globe. Check this one starting today for an undisclosed amount.
Update: The Samsung Story Station 3.0 comes in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capacities, with suggested retail pricing of $154.99, $194.99 and $269.99, respectively. Also, Storage Review has their review up now.

what the hell is that on/off switch situation... a scroll wheel?
@SteveyAyo It actually is a dimmer for the LED that illuminates the knob. Check the bottom right of the knob.
I have one of these (usb 2.0) and it doesn't fully dim (which sucks.)
@mados123 ahhh ok ... seems interesting but if it really doesnt fully dim why even put it on lol?
@SteveyAyo
I quite like the look of it. :)
Looks like a headphone amp.
usb 3.0: your cure for the slow file transfer blues
(see what i did there, how all 3.0 plugs are blue)
@Wildman
shutup
@Batman
Let's put a smile on that face.
@Wildman
It'll be a hot time in the old town tonight.
USB sucks. It is too fussy with drive letters and conflicts
that is REALLY ugly. but... I guess it doesn't matter because soon after purchase, it will be covered in my dust bunnies
@rekit
Looks like something from 1997.
@rekit The front and back pictures above really don't do it justice. It actually is a black, brushed aluminum casing (other than the front and back). The Story USB 2.0 units I have used in the past have been rock solid and always recommend them to my clients. Unlike the Maxtors and Seagates I have used.
Is there any company thats putting USB 3.0 in their computers yet. I know you can buy the Motherboard and build one with 3.0 but I haven't seen one major company like Dell, HP or Apple with the new USB.
@Jaylittles531
Do you know if the Envy line of laptops from HP come with USB 3.0?
At this point I'm thinking I'll wait another 1 or 2 years before I commit to buying a new laptop. I've got an HDX 18t from HP which I love to death for the most part and it has served me pretty damn well.
So I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon. But I'd like to have a timeline of whats coming up in the future that's for sure.
@TheLondonExchange
They do not. I want a Envy 17 when it comes out but I doubt it will have 3.0. I will probably wait too.
I thought at this point in time there's be a lot more USB 3.0 enabled storage devices and all new laptops would be coming out with USB 3.0 built in.
I've been holding off for some time, but I couldn't wait any longer and got a WD 2Tb external drive last week.
What's taking so long? Is it legal stuff?
It just seems that the tech has been done for a while, at least to an outside observer.
@blueskyv201
Intel is dicking around and won't be supporting USB 3.0 in their chipsets until the middle of next year.
Why? We have no clue. See this article: http://gizmodo.com/5396965/nvidia-confirms-intels-senseless-usb-30-delay-until-2011
@blueskyv201
Part of it is the chicken and egg problem.
Currently the hardware available to make USB 3.0 devices is lacking.
Hehe, fastest story ever...
2 port express card/34 cards are dirt cheap for getting USB3 onto laptops...let me guess....because Apple laptops don't have USB3 or express card now suddenly the mac faithful are going to find fault with it.
This is great and all. I'm all for progress. BUT, if they stick a shitty, slow drive in this thing, it will be a big "meh". And seeing how they seem to be shooting for a low price point, my guess is it will be mediocre. Still a good step forward, better than USB 2.0. A spindle drive will NEVER flood USB 3.0.
I've seen this exact case before being used by a DIY digital analogue sound converter....
That gigantic dimmer knob on the front is just plain stupid and poor design.
Holy cow, a 2TB external.. I am still weeping over Sony cancelling my favorite 1.44mb storage favorite.
Wow, this is actually really affordable.
Looks like a solid external HDD. I may get this.
