Sony selling 'PlayStation Protection Plan' warranty extension for PS3, PSP
Sony makes some pretty resilient game consoles, and while you'll certainly hear about the occasional glitch, they aren't exactly plagued with RRoD. That said, there's always room for worry, and if you're willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a brand-new service agreement with your name on it. Dubbed the "PlayStation Protection Plan," it simply extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two, and optionally covers your handheld's five-foot swan dive onto solid concrete for an additional fee. While replacement won't quite be no-questions-asked and the warranty explicitly fails to cover dead pixels, liquid damage and loss of data (among other things), we can still imagine some will pony up the $30 to $50 for extra insurance. Not us, though. Since you can only buy if you're still within the original warranty period, it won't help us replace our backwards-compatible 60GB PS3... and honestly, we think we've had enough of Sony's protection.

expensive!
@Coke You serious? It's a pretty good deal. It's even cheaper than Best Buys Protection plan.
@Coke expensive? slightly, but its better than the 155$ i just sent Sony to fix my 2 year old broken ps3.
@Coke
Sony, did your QA find something? Like maybe a 2010 bug or something? What are you hiding, huh?
@Coke $60 for 2 years > $150 for 90 days. Not expensive.
@shoxite
Yeah, but with BB's plan they give you a new unit on the spot. Until they change this I'll probably just stick with BB's coverage.
@Coke
Not that expensive, but I wish companies would stand by electronic products longer than a year or two. Can you imagine if an automotive company had a failure rate equivalent to the Xbox 360 and only covered it for 3 years? I wish electronic companies had recalls like they do in the automotive and baby stroller industry so my Xbox wouldn't be collecting dust like it is now.
@Stuey1214 How did your repair go? I have the YLOD on my 60 gig $600 paperweight. They want $200 total after shipping or $150 for a new unit but it won't do PS2. And for you others, my PSP had a dead pixel from day one also.
Our XBOX 360 is still going. I thought the Sony quality would last, but nope.
Pay thousands for a gaming system or hundreds for a car and you can bet that the reliability will correlate.
@Blazeddc
Did your Best Buy really give you a new one on the spot?
Cuz I used to work for Best Buy and my manager and several people at Geek Squad QUICKLY got rid of that illusion from the moment I first sold that Black Tie Protection to a customer telling them, "We will replace it with a new one right then and there"
Yeah I was yelled at for that...
@shoxite MS gives a 3 year warranty. free
@ericdj Sony quality is unmatched u just happened 2 be 1 of the unlucky ones 2 recieve a bad unit for that I am sry as far as owning an xcrack that is ur fault for sticking your self with a machine that still uses the standard DVD for video games no blu Ray pay for online and limited good 1st party exclusives and u also have 2 buy batteries for ur controller no wifi unless u want 2 spend $100 for get it and lest we not forget the infamous $100 60 gb hdd lmao that is totally ur fault
@onlysublime Because they got sued so many times for having s**ty hardware they should have had a recall for the original 360 cuz I've been through 4 of them
You know the problem with the PS3? The screw they put for the hard-drive is a super soft crappy screw that will get busted the minute you try to open it. Just search for the issue in google/youtube, a LOT of people having the screw busted when they try to replace/upgrade the hard-drive. I'm one of the victim, now the hard-drive is stuck for good.
The comments are going to get crazy. Imagine if Engadget also had a forum.
back on topic
Sounds okay to me.
it's not too bad, as long as they are willing to hand out free console replacement if they can't fix it.
@kingofwale
True. A while ago was contemplating which console to get now I know. PS3 here I come
Dead pixels are a major problem, I've had 3 PSP's and they ALL had dead pixel's immediately out of the box.
I had contacted them and they said it happens and it will go away. They still haven't.
These were PSP-100's.
Exactly.
@APV 1000's*
@APV
Dead pixels only seemed to be a problem on the 1000 series, but on the later series there are basically no such problems.
@APV I gotta ask, why did you keep buying them?
"and honestly, we think we've had enough of Sony's protection." ...ZZZZZing. Does that go double for Apple's?
It's 10% of the cost. Not to shabby. But I wouldn't buy it because they have a good reliability rate unlike the big M. One PS3 for 2 years. Xbox 360 since launch, and I've had 4 total so far.
@Jdubcsu YMMV...Since Nov 2007 I am now on my 3rd PS3 and they are babied. That's $400 extra (the cost in Canada after taxes is almost 200$ for a repair).
@kspraydad It could be because mine is not used as much as the 360 as it only gets used for Blue Ray and like 3 games. Online I only play on the 360 really. Might have something to do with it. Who knows. I guess people will all have different stories.
I don't need Sony's protection .... I'm snipped.
Thank you, I'll be coming here all week.
I think its seriously gay of Sony not to support the more feature packed and expensive PHAT PS3.
@IAMKITTY yep its very homosexual?
@Marius sorry for trying to keep it slightly PG for the younger viewers sir.
I am seriously considering this. I own a FF XIII limited edition PS3, and I would be heart-broken if/when it breaks.
I have had the drive on 2 PS3's crap out on me, and i know a handful of people with the same problem. i would not say it is "resilient" just "better than the Xbox"
PPP? Sounds awesome.
I guess Apple doesn't mind the name or box.....
Or you could get yourself an Amex card. They will double the manufacturer warranty on it at no extra charge.
@Waltah I love the insurance I have with my Platinum American Express card! They replaced my iPhone 3 times when i shattered the screen!
@Stevenk What the hell do you do with your phones...?
@ROFL
He didn't do anything. Shattering screens are a cool new 'feature' of iPhones.
@ROFL
I was wondering the same thing
This is a pretty good deal by Sony, some people here complain just to complain.
I can easily see the backwards compatible PS3 becoming a collectors must have of the gaming industry. Antiques Roadshow in the 25th Century is where you'll see it, I'd put money on it if I was a betting man, but I am not, so I'll just say "I bet you it will!"
Hilarious. They want me to pay them to stand behind their product. I'll pass.
''it won't help us replace our backwards-compatible 60GB PS3''
hu? they are acutally replacing my 80gb backward compatible right now.. i hat a Ylod last week and for 180bucks they repair or replace...
So, basically, they've run the figures and came to the conclusion that selling a warranty is worth the number of consoles that would theoretically fail.
Ergo, their offering should be a deterrent in itself: they are literally saying, 'Chances are, it won't fail."
@ch3burashka
basically, they are guessing MS has scared enough customers with the RROD that many people will buy into this
the box is really identical with Apple's, how about the services?
HAHAHAHAH Your game system needs Applecare?
Sony trips and falls on its face.
My 60 GB just died...=(
Will it protect me from a Firmware update crippling features I payed for?
I dont get it, I've been using Sonys "extended play" for as long as I can remember, I pay £4.99 a month and it covers it. I've had it replaced twice (both times BR laser failure on 60gb). They stopped new accounts because people were abusing it (taking out a policy when their ps3 dies). So is this only just happening in america when it's been happening for ages in the UK>
Always use protection.
