Sony makes some pretty resilient game consoles, and while you'll certainly hear about the occasional
glitch, they aren't exactly plagued with
RRoD. That said, there's always room for worry, and if you're willing to pay for peace of mind, Sony has a brand-new service agreement with your name on it. Dubbed the "PlayStation Protection Plan," it simply extends the full warranty on your PlayStation 3 or PSP for another year or two, and optionally covers your handheld's five-foot swan dive onto solid concrete for an additional fee. While replacement won't quite be no-questions-asked and the warranty explicitly fails to cover dead pixels, liquid damage and loss of data (among other things), we can still imagine some will pony up the $30 to $50 for extra insurance. Not us, though. Since you can only buy if you're still within the original warranty period, it won't help us replace our
backwards-compatible 60GB PS3... and honestly, we think we've had enough of Sony's
protection.
@AckbarsFist Funny
Does this cover feature loss as well?
That box is decidely apple-like, is it not?
Yup...boxes...Apple...check.
@onyajaws
white box = Apple???
that's next? Aluminum = Apple?
@kingofwale Does somebody really need to illustrate it for you, you ignorant tit?
You're trying too hard.
I see hating on Apple is still the hip thing to do here. That's why I don't come to Engadget often and I won't be coming back now. It's just ridiculous. Spec sheets still give you guys hard-ons. Goodbye.
Looks kind of like an Applecare box. Just sayin... :)
Wow, Monday must be a slow day for Engadget.
this justgives more money in sonys pockets
I allready got 3 years warranty from where I bought my PS3 for 20 euro more than original price.
Not surprised that they are doing this. When I buy Sony products I try to buy the first revision because in the later revisions they tend to use inferior components.
@bigcow05 From an insurance sales point of view what you just said makes no sense. Sony is offering this as a money maker as they are confident in the product they are now selling.
@kspraydad
What I had meant to say was that I was not surprised that the warranty extension was introduced now, four years after the release of the original PS3. From a money-making perspective, you are right, it makes no sense, but perhaps this action was a result of customer complaints rather than a purely profitable move. It's speculation on my part, but my previous experiences with Sony product "support" lead me to believe this.
looks similar to apple care protection plan :P even the picture too
Ye oldie PS1 & PS2 were indestructible (mine were anyway)... what happened...? I'm now on my 3rd Xbox360... and am just waiting for it to die.. pathetic! I expect it will give up the ghost around the time of the next gen-console launch... coincidence??!
I am seriously thinking of building my own gaming PC next time around, at least then you can fix and upgrade easily. I only want to play one game anyway: BF3, c'mon!
Sony just keeps making it harder and harder for me to defend their console. This is the dumbest thing EVER! Give me back my yellow dog please, because this warranty does not apply to the people who have the original and 2nd gen PS3's
I had 2 ps2s kill over, one after a year, another like a week after the 90 day warranty, true, that was a long time ago, but I gave up on Playstation then, I have had had 1 360 RROD, so xbox is still doing better in reliability, for me.
Pity mine already went YLOD last year, almost exactly 2 years after I bought it.
Not buying it. Playstations for me have all lasted a long time.
