Robovie R3 all set to assist, freak out elderly and handicapped shoppers this November (video)
The Robovie R3 is the latest in a distinguished line of humanoid bots developed for the purposes of research, discovery, and (a tiny bit of) geeky fun. Following its predecessor's footsteps -- the R2 secured employment as a guide to lost shoppers -- the R3 will be making its mall debut in November of this year, where it'll assist people by carrying their shopping, providing information about nearby products, and holding their hand as it guides them through the crowds. Intended as a way to get elderly and handicapped people back out into the community, this is part of a viability study for the robot's usefulness, and if it finds success maybe its anime eyes and dalek form factor will find their way outside Japan as well. Video of the R3 after the break.

This just shows the world is devoloping robots to take over human jobs and the next you know is terminator salvation for real!!!"
@Nickmate Have no fear, for I shall be devouring these androids to increase my power level.
@Perfect Cell While it's nice to see advancements in robotics being used to help others and it's nice to see that you still have those old cravings, I don't think Gero ever meant for you to be absorbing such grossly inferior technology. ;]
How can this thing in any way be better, cheaper, faster or more helpful than any ordinary employee in the market?
@SeeKo
Cuz this one doesn't need to be payed, given time off, or respected...
.
@SeeKo Because a robot won't get lazy or whine about a raise every 5 minutes. Also, this looks like robochild labor lol
@Bakerdk
Well, I believe that when I see the price tag on that thing and and the fee of the programmer who has to update these "cheap" helper's database every few days.
@Bakerdk
Oh, found it. $41,000. What a bargain. How many low wage workers can you replace with that?
@Bakerdk
"or respected..."
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAH...
@SeeKo
Well being an owner of a company I start to drool just thinking about it...For $41,000 it would replace about 3 or 4 of my low wage employees and then pay for itself just in the first year! The simple reason is because it won't take breaks, call in sick, talk on the phone, text it's friends, steal from me, require health insurance, try to get workmans comp, complain about the schedule or anything for that matter! and it could work 365/ 24/ 7!! Let's get these things evolving and quick like!!! I would gladly fire everyone and replace them with robots in a heartbeat!!! God I can't wait!!! Keep em comin!!!
@jeep447
I get what you are saying. Don't understand me wrong, I know the benefits of industrial robots. But I was referring to this one. It's supposed to help the elderly walk around in the shop and point out consumer goods.
It doesn't fill the shelves, clean the floors or bag your goods. It's simply wondering around looking for old, lost people. 24/7, 365 days a year.
I for one would like to be the first to welcome our new robot overlords ,i like to say can be useful them in catching humans for there slave labour camps,and preparing them for orderly extermination
It's ALIVE!!!
Wow, everybody and their mom is making robots. (I see a problem here)
Wow, i understood about 1/3 of that!
good, good! i need hard working robots for my sweatshop.
No need to call in Deckard, guys.
Just run up some stairs when they chase you.
"We don't know who struck first. We do know that we're the ones who destroyed the shopping malls. We thought that destroying their base of operations would give us the advantage but they adapted and learned"
That's a whole lot of tags on this story...
What's the buzz? Maybe the fly in the video @1:10-1:20 ;)
for those of u who do not speak japanese allow me to translate:
"i'm going to hang u from the tallest tree and burn u alive"
Intruder alert! Intruder alert! Chicken, fight like a robot!
I think they dosed the robot on the right with acid.
Hahaha, this is great :)
Make it say "Bidi, bidi, bidi, far out, Buck!"
Look - those little bots are escorting her to the meat grinder.
Oh, sure they're cute now, but movies such as the Matrix, Terminator, Star Trek Next Generation (with the Borg), and maybe even Robocop, have all foreshadowed that these machines will eventually turn on us.
Aaahhh! Kill it with fire!
If the can make this, why not make a Dalek.
(in a sweeter dalek gurgle) "As-sist— As-sist!
With a little - er sorry - a lot of luck robots will beat 3D at getting a market. Let's place our hopes in the awesomest of two futures.
That's not a robot. Phil Collins (RoboCollins) now that's a robot!!!
