Samsung and Panasonic 3DTVs use same active shutter glasses tech, but are (mostly) incompatible
At a recent London shindig to promote its 3D television sets, Samsung revealed that the active shutter glasses used to view its glorious, mighty, breathtaking 3D content are based on the same technology as Panasonic's, only they're reversed. That is to say, using your Sammy 3D specs to view Panasonic's 3DTVs won't work -- unless you flip them upside down. You read that right, the two companies have opted for different implementations of the same technology, resulting in the farcical outcome that glasses will be interchangeable between their sets only if you're happy to wear them upside down. How that's gonna help the 3D takeup effort, we don't know, but Samsung R&D chief Simon Lee does see a light at the end of this dim, poorly focused tunnel, stating that manufacturers are likely to agree a common active shutter glasses standard "as early as next year." You might wanna look XpanD's way if you want universal compatibility before then, or away in disgust if you're already tired of all the absurdity surrounding 3D.

Wow. And I thought that three d was stupid at home anyway. Now if you have glasses for one tv you probably can't use them on anyother tv. That's classy.
If they want 3d to have any chance in succeeding they will have to have all glasses compatible. They'll also have to do/change alot of other things.
3D is a gimmick, plain and simple. It's the AV World's version of SEO.
I HATE 3D.
Garbage.
HD or lo-fi, color or black and white, CGI or no CGI... I can get behind any of these things as tools that can add to or enhance media. 3D does NOTHING for a film.
Avatar is still Avatar, whether in 3D or not. (And I still say the biggest shame is overlooking the true star of Avatar, which is the CGI and Cameron able to film actors LIVE in a CGI environment... this is what really made Avatar and what made the 3D well done in that film).
By the way, Avatar is not the new 'Star Wars' of this era, it's the new Jurassic Park. Think about it.
@Hate Everything
You sir, are a fool.
Saying 3D does not enhance media is like saying satellite is an inefficient delivery system.
It provides depth of field, and hence realism. If you do not think that is "enhancing" then I would suggest you are even more of a fool that I previously thought.
I am also doubting you have actually seen a recent movie in 3D (Say, Avatar) as you seem to think, without saying it, that it's about things popping out at you. It's not.
@FORDY Yea....depth of field and realism you can only get from being sloshed. Nice try fathead.
So why care about whether or not the compatibility for the glasses is there or not? What they need to care about is the incompatibility of the guys in suits with the guys that help pay for those suits. Dudes! Nobody asked for 3D other than your little minions in the offices you occupy. As a consumer, I could care less whether 3D survives or not (it won't, other than in the form it's lasted since its other pushes over the decades). What interests me is watching these companies spill all that money that they have into something very few people want, and even fewer asked for to begin with. So again, glasses compatibility or not; misinterpretation or all out ignorance to an incompatible market can only leave me waiting/waving goodbye to 3D and hello to my bombshell lady-friend whom I'm going to pay the extra $7.50 surcharge to go see 3D where it belongs and should stay. Hell I might even save that $15 and put it towards a few more drinks or beers as that will get me closer to laid than ....oooooooo aahhhhhh 3D.....
Last thoughts 3D: Dumb Derelict Doomed (perhaps that's a more accurate description of what you are getting.
It's only a matter of time before we get glasses-free 3d. Then all the early adopters will feel stupid
@mynameisjay
I spoke to engineers about this very topic. They said it will take a minimum of 15 years to accomplish hi-quality 3D without glasses. I feel like all of you posters use to bash blu-ray. Guess what you were wrong! I will now sit back and play the worlds smallest violin while you cry babies get tears in your beer. Run some dirt on your vaginas as get back in the game.
@ap99 I was offended until I read the last sentence. Good illustrative writing my friend!
Oh and isn't the Nintendo 3DS using glasses-free 3d? Right right it must be because it's from the year 2025.
I honestly can't see this 3d thing taking off. I was at best buy the other day and tried it. It really does not look that impressive. I don't even care for blueray but that seems to be more impressive than that 3d crap.
The glasses thing is just frustrating. The industry will be so much better once glasses-less 3D is perfected. There are already a few displays out there sporting it: http://thirdmagazine.com/2010/04/30/zecotek-3d-display-no-more-glasses/
I just tried the reverse, Panasonic glasses on a Samsung 3D TV. This does not work, the panasonic glasses do not lock onto the Samsung IR signal, and do not start shuttering.
