The
Xperia X10, one of the big mindshare-grabbing devices of the smartphone world, made us wait a cool six months between its
November announcement and wide retail
availability in April. One of the secret hopes while all that waiting was going on was that perhaps SE would surprise us and
upgrade the dusty old Android 1.6 base installation to a fresh and creamy
Eclair (2.1) or even a frosty
Froyo (2.2) treat shortly after launch. Time to lay those dreams to rest, dear friends, as Sony Ericsson has come with an official schedule for upgrading the firmware on the Xperia X10 and its
X10 mini and X10 mini pro siblings, which places the Android 2.1 delivery in the fourth quarter of 2010 -- and knowing the company that probably means closer to Christmas than Halloween. All we can say is you'd better
really like that UX platform a great deal, because it'll be the only thing you'll be seeing for quite a while on Sony Ericsson's Googlephones.
Sony just doesn't seem very well-suited to compete in the fast-moving Android game.
The X10 will always be way behind
Today: Sony in "too little, too late" shocker
Q4? This isn't going to save SE's sorry *ss
How the hell X10 gets its own update. When I don't even have it?! Or not even on AT&T yet. This really pisses me off here. i'M GOING TO YELL AT at&t FOR NOT GETTING ANY GOOD ANDROIDS YET.
I actually have one of these and i love it, the majority of people out there have no idea what ANDROID is nevermind what release their handset has. I got rid of my iphone and got the x10 on the release date and i love it sure there are some things that could make it better but you could say that about every phone out there.
I wanted one of these when it was first announced.
Then I got over it.
Does Sony Erickson make any any CDMA phones? I would love to see a Sony Android phone on Verizon in the future but they seem to be only making GSM phones. :-(
EPIC FAIL. the end.
When I got my reply from SE about x10. Was old they would keep updating it. I'm a bit pissed with the lack of lastest os on it. And to be honest I think google should top feffing about and do a microsoft etc and demand no old versions on new high end (LOL) mobiles..
If sony did a new laptop it would have lastest os ( not meaning netbooks ) installed or no one woupd buy them.
Ok, just as with the HTC Hero, Sony Ericsson is making a BIG mistake with this one.
In today's world, you don't expect your phone to last for more that 1 to 1,5 years. The build quality isn't up to standards. Well, the internals might just work fine and dandy, but the exterior can't handle modern day usage and looks worn out after very little time. This equates to a "worn look" leaving the user feeling like ha has an "old phone".
SE has been down in the dumps for a LONG time when it comes to advanced mobile phones. Not since the P800 have they been up there and THAT wasn't even a good phone. SE needed to release this phone NOW to get back on top of things, get in the game. But they are releasing it with an old old version of Android. Basically, that's not cool.
Then saying they will release 2.1 in Q4? That's cazy, the X10 will BE AN OLD OLD PHONE.
The manufacturers has to
a) Either make a phone that can stand wear and tear or make exchangeable casing like Nokia did back in the days. Then release updates in the current tempo.
or
b) Ship updates faster, much much faster.
Releasing a phone today with such an old version of Android...is, stupid.
@Saint78 So cause I'm still running on Windows XP at home I'm old, I'm outdated?
I agree that SE has to speed up the updating but 6 mths for that update is not that long, look at Hero, still no update. The mainstream won't even understand what's under the hood when you buy a new phone today! The hardcore nerds out there might leave the X10 but I can assure you that they miss out out on a very nice piece of work.
@jdavidsson
If you are running XP at home today, you're not necessarily old, but yes you are outdated. I'm running Vista and I'm starting to get outdated.
When November comes, there will be a new version of Android, perhaps two new versions of android. There will be new phones as well from various manufacturers.
Specs for the X10 was released in June 2009. They were officially released in November 2009. It just went on sale. When November 2010 comes, it will be a year old (even more if you take into account the unofficial release of specs and pictures).
So November 2010, X10 will get Android 2.1, all other new phones will have Android 2.3 or something thereabout. So you will have an old phone with a old operating system.
Why? Because HTC want's to make a "better" phone than SE so they will release a new phone with Android 2.3 just to get a leg up on SE. Then SE has to release their own 2.3 phone and thus crapping on their own X10. HTC has done this with the Hero.
@Saint78 I have no problem understanding that SE is a bit late using 1.6 (still the changes they've made to 1.6 is good) and not getting 2.1 until november, however, I don't get the 'race' we're in. Sure the core in android is better optimized, there are more apps to use and so on but for the mainstream user it won't matter. That's my point! The Desire/Nexus One will be OLD as you say, in november when HTC or any other phone maker releases another phone, still they are great phones with everything inside to satisfy all the needs of a mainstream user.
Sure, I would have liked 2.1, but do I feel sad? No, why should I, we just have different views and I'm not that keen on the 2.2-race that we are experiencing. (Sry my bad written english I'm Swedish) =)
@jdavidsson
Well, the Nexus One was released early January 2010, so it's already 4 months old and still has the newest Android and always will have. When FroYo is released, you can update the Android and have a "current" phone, still keeping up with "The Race".
There is a lot of talk about fragmentation of Android versions and the downfall of Android because of it. The opposite is why iPhone has done so well in comparison, COMPLETE nazi control over everything from Jobs. It works, but it's not that sexy and it get's old fast.
Se hasn't done THAT much to Android, just those two "apps/widgets", nothing more. They should let people upgrade to stock Android 2.1 so it would be more current. But SE don't want that, because then there would be no reason to choose the X10 over Nexus One. That's why HTC builds Sense into their phones. To get people to buy their phone and keep somewhat control over the environment.
What we need is better support and updates from the manufacturers when they decide add their own stuff like Sense.
Why is it so difficult to port SE software to Android 2.1 from 1.6? I thought SE was a big company with smart people?
To Google: Make it easier to port sw from earlier Android versions
To Manufacturers : Intensify fw updates for your products
@Saint78 Fair, I agree in many ways. The big changes SE has made to this is a totally new software for the camera to be able to get somewhat good pictures in Android, the stock camera software is just rubbish. The BT stack has been rebuilt since the stack in 1.6 is very bad and a common problem in many versions. That's just a few of the changes made but I still agree that SE have to pick up the pace with updates, couldnt' agree more. Hopefully they take note of discussions like these.
@jdavidsson
I've had the T68i, T610, K700, K750, W810, K800 and the K810. Then SE started making crap phones, or rather they made the same old phones over and over again. They were not keeping up with the competition basically. It's going to take some persuasion for me to go over to SE again.
BTW: I did really like the X10, but because of Android 1.6 I bought the HTC Legend instead.
Give me a GREAT camera (I know SE can do this), newest Android and something ala HTC Sense and I'm there!
It is always a tradeoff : Should I costumize the phone that makes it really special or should I spend my effort into keeping up with the newest Android version?
SE chooses the first.
