HP TouchSmart tm2 getting Core i3 and i5 this summer?
This is just a rumor at this point, but it's definitely one we'd file in the believable column. According to NewGadgets.de, HP's planning to update its 12.1-inch tm2 convertible tablet with Core i3 and i5 processors in June. Considering we've heard that Intel will be releasing its Core i5 ULV processors around then, this certainly makes sense --- after all, we'd expect HP to swap out the current Core 2 Duo ULV processors for something more powerful, yet power efficient. Time will tell if the new chips make it into the multitouch laptop, but it's good to know that HP's still working on at least some sort of Windows 7 tablet.

I'd rather have a flat, scratch-resistant, smooth GLASS display that reflects like a mirror, than a wavy, soft plastic-like layer that most laptops use, giving a cheap quality feel to the screen.
I use a E295c convertible with a coated GLASS display. I've had no problem with it, and I'm using it right now next to a giant French window.
i love the tm2! if it comes with a better cpu, i'm all for it! tablets need power too! atom or arm processors don't cut it! even my ancient amd hp tablet had more power than the lame atom.
whenever people see what i can do with a convertible, they're amazed. the only thing that ms needs to work on for windows 7 is a true virtual keyboard designed for finger typing a la iPad. if they added that one feature, you would truly have the best of both worlds. that ancient virtual keyboard that was a remnant from the very first version of tabletpc doesn't cut it anymore. it doesn't even have all the keys!
@onlysublime
Um, this is currently a Core 2 Duo, which is a LONG way from an Atom processor.....
@jw518 I wasn't referring to the tm2 having an atom. i was referring to the ipad (arm cpu) and all the upcoming atom tablets. the atom is barely enough to drive a netbook, let alone a full-fledged pc.
idk how good my german is, but i believe an upgrade for the graphics card is also mentioned. from the current ATI Mobility Radeon 4550 to the Radeon 5450
i could be reading it wrong but i don't think
THIS is what I think of when I hear "tablet". All this hype lately about "tablet" devices seems kind of silly, because there have been tablets around the market like this for about10 years. I know. I have one that old.
God mother, this thing is ugly period. I would rather get Sony. I will never want to carry that thing around lol. And when did 12.1 inch become a net book? I have Sony vaio 12.1inch LAPTOP. Im also proud owner od an iPad. Besides, I learned my lesson back in 1995 when I bought Packard Bell (hp). Remember how bad they were? I promised myself I will never eveer get another hp. After 15 years, I haven't bought hp and I still consider them a trash. LOL. Don't buy hp. I have seen so many people regret .
@jkwakopo
What on earth are you talking about? Who said it was a netbook? When did Sony start selling a convertible tablet, let alone one with a digitizer? How are HP one of the largest computer manufacturers in the world if all their products are crap? And for the love of God, who in their right mind gave you access to the internet?
@jkwakopo
I hate to tell you this, but Packard Bell, and HP are not now, and have never been related.
Secondly, if you are worried about how your computer looks, rather than how it works, you really have some issues.
@jkwakopo man, if you confused Packard Bell with Hewlett Packard, maybe you shouldn't be using any computer.
@jkwakopo If you have a Sony laptop, wtf did you get an Ipad?!
I was considering the TM2, but after playing around with it at Fry's I decided to wait on a tablet PC. The glossy screen really turned me off. But now with the new processors, I may reconsider. Hopefully they replace the glossy with a matte screen.
@bladerunner0427 just get a photodon anti-glare screen protector, you lose a little touch but you get used to it and learn to use the fingerprint side of your finger instead of the tip of your finger.
@sirgrinalot I thought about using an anti-glare screen. I've read a few reviews about people using them. I'm gonna hold out and see what happens with the new processors.
That's my baby right there! (although mine has the 1.6GHz ULV CPU)
I would be all over this if not for the weight... I need to use it standing up but the weight will be tooo much for long periods of time.
Yo hp how a bout a tablet netbook please, no need fast CPU but nice touchscreen like tx2 is very welcome!
I want whatever version of Windows that is...
*jaw + floor
Color me impressed! Well done HP.
Honestly I see no need for this, I haven't found anything to max out my current models processor the su9600 @ 1.6ghz, no games come close to maxing it out, and folding@home only uses half of one of the cores.
My friend has the m11x and it gets 100 fps on the css video stress mine gets 99.67, he has an ssd and I don't so that may make the difference.
As for the 4550, I can play all my 100+ games on steam at very good frame rates except Farcry2. On MW2 I can play @ 1360x768 with all settings maxed getting 30+ fps very playable. That is above the monitors 1280x800 resolution. I am very pleased with gaming performance, it comes o so close to beating the m11x at it's own game.
The only reasons I would return mine and get this refresh is if the battery life were greater than the current model, which is unlikely due to the upgrades. And if it weighed a little less. Other than that I see no reason to get it.
Man..... once the get WebOS on this thing it's going to be spectacular. this would be what I would buy over an ipad any day and ESPECIALLY with WebOS.
Shiieeeeeeee! (Owner of current tm2)
I don't play games and the current model is actually surprisingly fast... But yeah, I bet that will boost up the sales.. This still is the best laptop for students, MBP's included...
Where's Engadget's review of tm2?
Apple will sell more iPads in its 1st year than all of the Tablet PCs sold since the first Tablet PC debuted in 2003.
@wshwe
That's nice for them.
The question is.....Has HP fixed the many design issues present in the TM2s predecessors...especially in heat dissipation and battery life.
As one of the many TX or TX2 purchasers whose machines eventually crapped out due to the NVidia chip warping the motherboard (and HP never offering a recall or a fix other than trying to charge me 400$).....I am wary of any HP products these days.
Especially since their laptops are ranked near the bottom in reliability.
