MacBook Air feeling the wind of change?
A tipster who apparently correctly predicted the recent MacBook Pro refresh has alerted Australian Macworld to a new SKU making its way through Apple's systems down under. According to said "well-placed" source, the MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA code string identifies an incoming batch of all-new MacBook Air laptops. This makes all the sense in the world given the recent hubbub about Intel offering ULV versions of its 32nm Core 2010 processors and the Air's overdue need for an upgrade, but there is the proviso that this could also be referring to shipments of new 27-inch LCDs, to match the ones found on the latest iMac generation. Either way, we're looking at some unannounced hardware rapidly making its way to Australia. Hey, doesn't Apple make a habit of announcing new goodies on Tuesdays?

I think eventually, Apple will be able to fit the horsepower of a MacBook Pro into a MacBook Air form factor and that the two lines will merge.
Glass trackpad FTW, but that probably won't happen. It seems as if all updates pertaining to the MBA will be about the interior.
Completely superficial but all I actually want Is the black screen rim and the Glass no button trackpad. Standard spec upgrades with that and u've got me sold :P
It's such a pretty machine…
Wait, is this coming to Australia before the U.S.?
Noticed that the 30" CD shipping time went from 24 hours to 5-7 days. Wonder if we might see a refresh on it as well. Hopefully a price drop to go with it.
My mom has a really nice macbook. It is my hope that when she writes her will, I become... the next...macbook heir.
@slikdealor
MacBook Heir, for the orphans among us.
I'm surprised people actually buy that thing. I don't care who you are, it's the most overpriced device on the market.
@Plazmic Flame What about the Dell XT?
@Atkins the Dell XT is in a completely different class. Not even comparable.
@Plazmic Flame
You may not like the price but it's price competitive for ultra-thin portables using decent hardware. (CD2, 9400GM) Usually they're in the $1500-$2k price range.
@Plazmic Flame At a Best Buy they had the air on display next to a Dell Adamo. It was like comparing a BMW 3 series to a Hyundai Genesis from a build and style perspective. The Apple was simple better styled, design and had this understated elegance about it. The Dell just looked bling. There was far more interest by the public in the air. Interesting this was done to promote the Dell!
Someone who buys Hyundai will never buy a BMW, you get more horse power, features and space in Hyundai Genesis than a 3 series... but I doubt BMW is selling to Hyundai market. Apple = BMW, Dell = Hyundai... Hyundai sells more cars.
@therodt Not important. We are talking about overpriced hardware.
I have never really understood the point of the MacBook air. All the other apple products I like, but this i just don't get. Is it cheaper than a normal MacBook? I know it's thinner, but is it actually any smaller? If it's yes then I guess it's apples version of a netbook, if not I really don't get it.
Maybe it's bought by those that love the design, and want something that thin.
@sl86 Its a niche product at best and a look at me device at worst. Its just thin and light. It looks nice but that is it. Almost pure form over genuine function.
I think it's for all the idiots that fell in love with the motorola RAZR. I would buy the MacBook/MacBook pro over it any day. I think they look far better anyway.
@sl86
It's thinner and lighter (about half the weight of the MacBook Pro 13) Ultra-thin laptops are definitely a niche market
@sl86 I'd buy it over a MacBook Pro. MacBook Pros are just way too big and clunky, and the OS sucks. This thing would have girls throwing their panties at me even more than usual.
Besides higher specs and better connectivity options, I'm really in need of an internal 3G modem. Seems like this would be a super obvious feature seeing that the exec. facet of the market probably all need that at this point and can dish out the eXtra cash.
If that doesn't come, I'll go for the super-lite Vaio (Xseries?) that has all the above. Or maybe ICD's Vega later in the year and forget about keyboards and computing on the road all together.
they have 900gb 1.5 in hd'z so its up to apple... they usually use old hardware anyways
I Wouldn't mind an updated macbook air...maybe if they actually made it a faster machine and a lower price...oh wait, it's apple...nvm.
I can't say I understand the appeal of these ultra lightweight notebooks. They're extremely underpowered, easily breakable, and prohibitively expensive. Just makes no sense to me.
People usually measure Apple product cycles,
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Air
And this product is about 100 days past its expected refresh time.
With WWDC in a couple weeks (not a place to discuss hardware spec bumps)...i'm not sure when they're gonna 'talk' about it. Just do a spec bump already, or announce there's a major new direction for this product
I might be able to use this computer for the same purposes as a $599 PC. $1499 NO SSD? WTF!?
finally
Anyone know what happened in the end? I don't see any new goodness.
BTW, Engadget, your search sucks. I typed in "Apple" and this article didn't show up. I have to click on "tags" for it to work.
All I want is only ONE additional USB port. Oh, Apple, please update my beloved.
