Lenovo's eco-friendly ThinkPad L Series arrives cheaper and faster than expected
Lenovo may not have had its ThinkPad L Series laptops out in time for Earth Day, but the company's found an arguably even better incentive to help you help them save the environment: a nice fat upgrade and a small sale to commemorate their new availability. While we were originally told the $649 ThinkPad L412 would house a lowly Celeron P4500 inside its post-consumer-content housing, it appears Lenovo has decided against using that chip entirely -- cue applause -- in favor of the 2.13GHz Core i3-330. What's more, both the 14-inch L412 and 15.6-inch L512 also come with double the memory (2GB in total) and are presently on sale for just $599. Not bad for a slab of recycled plastic, sand and assorted metals, eh?

Day-um. Not bad. If only it had the new Lenovo keyboard you guys love.
@techee44
The classic ThinkPad keyboards are still better than any other laptop keyboard on the market.
@Prevacator
I respectfully disagree. I have a sony vaio e series, and I love the keyboard on it. in fact, it recently made a "best keyboards" list on cnet.
@techee44
that red thing in the middle of the keyboard seriously needs an amputation.
@McKirf That "red thing in the middle" is one of the main reasons I own a Thinkpad. If something needs an amputation, it's the touchpad.
@techee44
I think you are incorrect. I am yet to feel anything in my fingers as pleasurable as a thinkpad keyboard.
Wow, people are still diggint the red nipple? What's this, 1990s?
@cdf74dc9
If you've never used one you can't really comment on how outdated they are. They're incredibly comfortable with low space.
@cdf74dc9 They are way better than any touchpad I've ever used, except maybe the Macbook touchpads.
@cdf74dc9
And mice have been around since the 70's, so what's your point?? A good input device is still a good input device.
We would all be lucky if more laptop makers offered a eraser-pointer like Lenovo does.
@cdf74dc9
Let me guess, you hate the stylus too?
@Hazdaz Imitated, but never duplicated.
The Toshiba, Dell sticks were all horrible. I've tried them all and only the the Thinkpad's live up to the standards.
@And keyboards have been around since the 1890s. So, what's your point[er] (pun).
The Lenovo is a graet machine, and I am using one now. My previous laptop was a Lenovo, and lasted for many years.
Lenovo makes a terrific product.
@Hazdaz
The last part of your statement isn't completely true. HP for example offers an option for a trackpoint-like nipple on some of their machines, but it is simply garbage. The trackpoint is useful. But other makers offering them would only be good if they were as accurate as Lenovo's.
That is pretty awesome. They probably won't offer a sharper screen though, even if it's all I want and something I'd pay for. Shame.
Lenovo. I love yoouuu
Who gives a crap about eco-friendly? I'm so tired of this damn green fad. Just give me more power and better design for my money. I don't want to pay more because it saved a tree.
@rosebowl23
That's why there are about 20 different thinkpad models to choose from. It's good that they make something for everyone
@rosebowl23
Unless you have some other planet to go fly off to when this one is polluted beyond belief then I suggest you STFU.
ALL products should be using some amount of post-consumer waste at this point in time.
I just ordered a T410i last week. this L series is nice too though, for the price
@ruby
Good choice.
Lenovo is selling L series for a higher price just because they're eco-friendly?
These will be dirt-cheap on eBay in a few months, then...
@howeyman Starting at $599 is barely more. Traditionally the midrange Thinkpads start way higher.
I think it's more like splitting the T Series into a lower and upper half, picking up where the R Series left off.
Besides, nobody buys Thinkpads at MSRP anyways, look for Friends and Family EPP codes.
@howeyman
Are you comparing these to netbooks? When looking at competitors in the 14"-15" range with the i3-330, this looks reasonable. The HP G63t starts at $569 and the Dell Studio 15 with i3-330 starts at $649.
Mmmm I effing love lenovo products... i want
Wait a second... in the original press release, they said you'd have the choice of either Intel integrated graphics or ATI discrete graphics. Now if you go to the product page to customize the order, there's no option for graphics -- only integrated Intel. Sean, could you talk to somebody at Lenovo to clarify this?
I was given a Thinkpad T400s from my company. I was surprised. Thin, very light, solid, doesn't heat up like an oven after some work, great keyboard, battery lasts quite a lot. Best laptop I ever had.
@gilez Seconded. Still rocking my T-61 and it continues to be the best computer I have ever used.
Also I love the trackpoint. Use it for pointer, touchpad set for scrolling only and I never have to lift my hands from the keyboard. In terms of pure usability, nothing else compares.
