We don't yet have much insight into the performance of the
many laptops now being powered by
AMD's new mainstream CPUs, but we can say we're big fans of the prices they're ringing up. Starting at $549, Lenovo's rolling out the
Edge 14 and 15 with big A's latest Athlon II X2 P320, Turion II X2 P520 and Phenom II X3 P820 processors on June 22. They won't be available with discrete graphics options, but the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 IGP should at least go easy on the 4- and 6-cell battery options. Other than that the Edge is the same machine we have come to know and love over the past few months -- now let's just hope that AMD power lives up to its promise.
cool a WHOLE computer, for the price of 549. comes with more space, more processing power, can multitask, still portable, and a bigger screen.
its a bargain over the iPad!
... and here comes the flaming
@wako
Flame Flame!
Apple sucks blah blah blah
Windows ftw...
I think that covers it all =)
@(Unverified)
Yep, and honestly most intelligent people will buy the laptop over the ipad. But there's always a market for those who want something cool and gadgety - and that's why the ipad sold a million.
I think these thinkpads look pretty nice and offer awesome value for money.
No flaming required.
@hdawggy
actually, i use OSX :D
@higherdestiny
I 100% agree with you, just throw in a ATI 5470+ even for $100 more and it would still be great value.
@wako "A whole computer" thats the problem right there. People are not looking for a complete computer. I already have 2 of them i don't need yet another cheap laptop.
What people are looking at is the new paradigm shift in computing. Something new and innovative, NOT YET ANOTHER LAPTOP.
@wako How did the iPad come up? I don't remember the article mentioning it, but maybe I missed something.

@MySchizoBuddy
You might not want a "while computer".
But, if your dumb ass just bought an Ipad, you PAID for a WHOLE COMPUTER.
Anyone who is paying $500+ for an I-pad is an I-diot.
@rhcpsfan very observant, you are padawan.
you are absolutely correct, i pulled the iPad out of thin air! POOF!
@higherdestiny
it's the intelligent people who don't come here to post on engadget...and you'd have to be dumb to buy a pc, let alone a lenovo.
when will apple haters stop hating...it's like on the ford mustang forums they'd rather own a mustang than a ferarri.
@Vanilla Sperm
you talk of intelligence yet you lack any good arguments. well played sir!
@MySchizoBuddy
"...the new paradigm shift in computing. Something new and innovative..."
You know when you're completely and utterly brainwashed when the things you say mimic exactly the company and press releases rather than formed from your own thought processes.
Sounds like AMD is making a comeback in the laptop market. But why stop here? Lets bring back CYRIX!
@higherdestiny
I remember like 10 years ago CYRIX had a prototype for a cheap tablet. Maybe they'll come back with a vengeance and outsell the ipad.
@dardub AMD owns Cyrix's designs, the Atom completely destroyed them in the market.
And VIA owns the Cyrix trademark, and had their design team, but when they proved themselves incompetent compared to Centaur, who was designing the C3 (their "low-end" chip, which ultimately replaced the Cyrix III in VIA's product plannng,) they ditched all of it.
Cyrix is as good as dead.

HA i posted it first! tee hee
@hdawggy
... you beat me to it
Which pad is right for you?
dun dun dun
I love the Thinkpad line (dating back to my last laptop when it was an IBM Thinkpad), but the only things I absolutely hated about IBM and now even Lenovo, is that they are cheap buggers and they try to milk the unsuspecting customer extra $$$ for "basics" like a dual layer DVD burner (they'll ship you a CDRW/DVD player by default) and 2 gigs of RAM (if you're lucky). Why don't they just get with the times and by DEFAULT, ship you a DVDRW and 4 gigs of RAM? Then pound that down into a price range of $549.00+ and we'll start talking. The only things I really miss my current generation laptop had that I used to have with my Thinkpad were the built in LED light in the screen bezel and the keyboard...the number of times I need that built in light are many. All laptops should come with built in LED's...
@Chaosdivine
i agree, ThinkPads are outrageously overpriced for things that any other maker would consider as basic. However, you drop a ThinkPad, it will be scuffed and drop a HP or a Dell its in a million little pieces.
Does the Edge series have a battery pack that sits flush with the bottom of the laptop, or does it extend down a few intches? Thus eliminating the point of a 1" thick laptop all together..
Why not use the Radeon 4XXX IGP instead of the 3400?
@Brother Unit No 4 My guess is that they just dropped the new CPU into an existing design, using an older chipset.
Yay!
Love the Edge laptop design, these new models sound well rounded for the price, hopefully Best Buy will replace the current Intel Edge in-store with one of these.
So how do these compare to the Core i3?
So how do these compare to the Core i3 model?
SRSLY why even offer different size screens? They're all the same (low) resolution.
