HP's $950 TouchSmart tm2 surfaces at Amazon with Core i3-330M
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? Just a week after hearing that HP would soon be refreshing its TouchSmart tm2 convertible tablet with Core i3 and Core i5 options, in flies this: an Amazon product page confirming as much. The 12.1-inch, 4.72-pound TouchSmart tm2-2050us is currently in pre-order status, rocking a 2.13GHz Core i3-330M processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 640GB hard drive (5400RPM), Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), a WXGA LED-backlit display, Intel's integrated graphics set, Altec Lansing speakers, a 5-in-1 card reader and gigabit Ethernet. You'll also get a brushed aluminum finish, inbuilt webcam and fingerprint reader, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, a trio of USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI / VGA outputs, audio in / out and a battery good for around four hours of use. You can get in line now in exchange for $949.99, and if we were the betting type, we'd surmise that a Core i5 version was just around the bend.

Is it possible to change the HDD to a SSD easily without disassembling the whole laptop?
This convertible is almost perfect, but... why a standard voltage processor?
SU7300 was a great compromise between performance and battery life, so you could easily get an all-day computing experience.
Wait for the i3 ulv, or give me an i5-520UM, but not this, please...
ACTIVE DIGITIZER WITH PRESSURE SENSITIVITY FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turnballs, just grabbed a Tm2t a few weeks back. CPU power was actually my main concern too. Great laptop though, very cool and quiet. And frankly I was wrong about the processing power, the 1.6 core2 seems to handle everything fine and I haven't felt any app as being sluggish yet.
I'd be interested to know how hot/loud the core i5 versions will run, since they're the higher end M versions and not the ULV like the core 2 in mine. If that thing melts your desk then it's really not worth it, the TM2 really wasn't designed to handle hefty CPUs and has minimal cooling and vents, you can't even hear the fan unless you put your ear next to the exhaust. I'll definitely be looking for a review when the i5 version with an ATI card comes around, an eventual upgrade might be worth it.
The best news from this is really the fact that they're going to support the drivers for this thing for a long time, and since the hardware is almost identical to the older models it's good news for me. There are a few software issues they could iron out still.
"looking for responses from students"
how easy is it to rest your palm on the screen of the tm2 and take notes?
does the screen do a good job of only recognizing the pen and not your palm? Is it similar to the wacom bamboo pen n touch pad whereas if the pen is on the screen then the touch sensor is temporaily off?
@chnwa3 Ok, I'm not a student but as far as inking goes it's excellent. It's using a wacom digitizer which as soon as the pen comes near the screen it goes to pen mode without fail. I got the core 2 duo version about a month ago and I'm pretty impressed with how good MS One Note can recognize my scrawls. One things is that it's a little heavy, why can't someone bring out a Win 7 tablet which is < $1000 & < 3lbs tablet with active digitizer?
@chnwa3
Yes, the touch turns back on as soon as you move the pen off the screen. No problems at all with palm recognition: it's a wacom digitizer! You can take notes just like on a paper pad.
If you're a student, and not a gamer, consider sticking with the SU7300 configuration: it has all the processor power you'll need, with great battery life to forget about remaining charge during all your classes.
@dstar I feel the same way, its a hassle to carry all these textbooks(engineering major), as well as a 4.75lb laptop
@0110110101100100 Awesome, I asked that question b/c I recently purchased a bamboo wacom pen n touch and its simply amazing, I hope the tm2 core 2 duo's drop down in price to about $825, then I'll definetly buy it or wait n see the benchmarks for the core i3's to see how much it improved from the older models
@chnwa3
If you are able to get a Student discount off the HP site its about $850 or the old version was at least
@chnwa3 I've got a bamboo pen & touch as well and this thing is better at both since you're writing on the screen and also becuase it uses Win 7 native multitocuh which means any app that supports mutitotuch will work as opposed to the bamboo which uses it's own drivers and doesn't work with a bunch of apps.

Whoops, How clumsy of me

Must of slipped out by accident

Oh no! Its broken, now i need a new tablet!
I would never buy HP again. I had a TX1000 and it was chock full of bloatware garbage. Then it overheated in less than 2 years.
Nice design, nice specs, nice price, I WANT IT.
I want to get one but the viewing angles really do need improvement. I get better viewing angles on my 6 year old Toshiba. If the screen gets even a minor update then I'll jump in line.
I wouldn't mind one of these, is it coming to the UK? £950 US would translate to a UK retail price of about £700 which isn't bad for the spec.
it will definitely come to Germany, so I guess it will be released in UK as well ...
I asked german hp support and they confirmed it for end of june.
do they make versions without all the silly bezel?
i really wish ibm would release an affordable non-netbook tablet instead of the $2k X201s
I got myself a TM2 some months ago. The main concern is that there is not enough software available to make it really shine!
For notes you can use Microsoft OneNote which works perfectly!. The "other" great application is ComicRack (for reading comics, etc) which now in version 0.9.122 supports a wide range of multitouch commands.
Beside that and some Microsoft Toys there is not much around to enjoy a multitouch tablet with Windows on it :/
Is it just me or the full description on amazon is still for the old tm2? it says 320gb HDD 7200RPM
I'm considering this now that the slate running Windows 7 is probably vaporware. Does anyone know is this will run Starcraft 2?
@slugabug
Not knowing the spec requirements for that game, it's hard to tell how good it will run. I got the tm2 with the 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo and ATI graphics option, and can run programs without any hiccup. I haven't tried gaming but reports say that it handles games fairly well. The new i3 option will make it faster, albeit at battery expense I presume.
@shishi
Yeah - I've also got the 1.6 GHz and ATI graphics - I've seen some videos of it playing mw2 on youtube wit no problems - and from experience I can say it is really fast on most programs. I'm still going to try to upgrade to the i3 version though - I just need more processing power for photoshop.
Btw if anybody gets this notebook and intends to "update" the drivers published by HP... DON'T. Here's what HP driver "updates" have done to me and many other users at TabletPCReview.com:
- BIOS upgrade messed up boot sequence and kept CPU fan running permanently. Rolling back didn't work and many notebooks had to be sent for repair.
- Touchpad "update" messed up the touchpad, stopped working afterwards.
- Sound driver caused problems.
- Fingerprint reader, same deal.
So, if you get a tm2 and it works, don't change anything, at least until others have tried it. Otherwise be prepared to spend endless nights chatting with John Smith (Raj), Peter Thompson (Pradip) and occasionally on the phone with Sarah (Archana).
anyone know a release date?
I was going to get this laptop next week before I went on my trip but if this is way better then should I wait? Is there any major difference besides speed? I'm only a student so I'll only be using it for school and stuff so is waiting for the newer one necessary? Or should I just go ahead and get the one that's already out?? Ahh help!

Single touch or multi-touch?
Touchpad looks like it has the same horrific central position (under your right palm when trying to type) as the Mini 311 (which was lovely, but is nearly unusable for typing because of that). Some symmetry obsessed industrial designer has been doing that to all consumer HPs. I have the 311, and tried other models in shops and they all fail for typing because the cursor keeps jumping around.
The HP 2740p weighs 1 pound less, has a correctly positioned touchpad, and a bunch of features useful for business folk. It looks like the tm2's pinstripe cousin.
The UL processor is not going to make an all-day experience. Remember, you are using an LCD through a touch-screen layer. Even with LED lighting that takes power especially if you want daylight use. Then there is the disk, the DRAM, etc.
The CPU is not the only thing drawing power.
The tm2 is already a great tablet, I've had one for 4 months now (SU9600 HD4550 6GB RAM) and it's just an awesome machine. I would agree that the screen is the weakest like in this device. The screen is a bit glossy and the viewing angles aren't the best however I've found that the HD 4550 dedicated GPU produces a better image than than the Intel IGP and I've never been in a situation where I couldn't compensate like positioning the machine properly or turning up the brightness though that does drain the battery.
The main issue is that better screen would drive up the cost and compete with HP business tablets.
I love this thing, I don hope that maybe HP can get a better screen in the unit on this refresh as I think I will pick one up and sell my current tm2 to on of my in-laws.
any news on the release date? my aunt is coming to my country from the US on july 8th, should I buy the older model or wait for this one?
WAIT! they downgraded the processor look:
Intel Core i3-330UM Processor (1.2GHz, 3MB L3 Cache); not 2,1GHz anymore =(
also Processor
Intel® Core™ i3-330UM Processor, 1.20GHz
is it really different from the core 2 duo? I
