Just a day before the
Pre Plus launches on AT&T, current Palm owners are experiencing all kinds of problems related to the App Store and their Palm Profiles. Reports indicate the problems started last night, since then users haven't been able to download new apps or update existing ones from the catalog, while those unlucky enough to have tried a reset have had trouble signing back into their Palm profile in the cloud, and have lost some information like call logs and had to resync their various accounts in webOS. The Palm Developer Website is also down, tossing a "back in a few hours" sign in the window and going out for a few afternoon mimosas. For now,
PreCentral posters recommend taking the device off of network time and resetting it to any day prior to today which will allow apps to install and update without issue. A post on the official Palm blog indicates things should be back to normal "soon" so AT&T customers can hopefully avoid any date/time trickery just to get their Foursquare checkins going.
Update: Palm says everything
should be back to normal. Phew. Thanks, Marcio!
[Thanks, William]
@Waltah
Awesome! TouchStone for 20 at TheShack? Good to know.
Is there any ways to unlock this AT&T Pre Plus to be able to use it in Canada with Rogers? I maybe want to get one but no carrier are talking about getting it so I don't have any choices than buy one from USA. :(
I
@willielewis2 I
@willielewis2 ??
@CrypticWritings I heart WebOS
@willielewis2 I didn't see that one
I originally loved my Pre but at this point I hate it. Wobbly hardware, volume button fell off, and after 1.4.1 the OS locks up at every juncture. I can't even use the mail app because it freezes before it even gets its GUI open.
Evo for me.
@Jordus We get it, you want to get an EVO, and to make you feel justified for getting one, you gotta put down the Pre as much as you can so that the collective geek society can pat you on the back with a decision well made, right?
There's no way the Pre locks up at every juncture unless you seriously have a lack of brains an somehow screwed up the easy to use Preware.
@Jordus
Sprint Pre I assume?
@AttractiveDoorHinge ummm ok...I never used preware or any homebrew stuff. Its a stock pre with OTA updates from day 1. 1.4.1 is extremely buggy (if you dont think so, just browse precentral.net). There is no excuse for performance/reliability isues on an OS thats been out for a year. They should be solved by now. If pressing an icon and assuming the app will open and work is "doing it wrong" then I don't know how anyones phone works.
Yes, Sprint Pre.
@Jordus
You just simply don't have enough ram.. unlike the Plus variants
tsk tsk
@BoyFabulous tsk tsk? Its MY fault that Palm released an under powered phone? wtf?
@Jordus
Who said it was your fault?
Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
@Jordus
hummm... Have my original Pre from launch day almost a year ago (with Sprint). My girl got one two days later. Neither of us have had a single problem. I like the phone and love WebOS. The EVO is tempting, I'll pry upgrade. But I have nothing negative to say about Palm. If they had an Evo like hardware with WebOS, Id be there in a sec.
Last straw for me with Palm. My Pixi doesn't even work right now. Waiting for Palm to hurry up and get back on the network. Can't wait to get me a new HTC Evo.
@anotherworld
Everybody keeps saying that. BIGGER SCREEN = BETTER.
huh.. and here I am thinking the screen size right now is what keeps the phone sexy and sleek.
FULL TOUCHSCREEN = BETTER
really? the physical qwerty keyboard is bombastic and plus, it's portrait keyboard unlike rest of the oh-so-common landscape keyboard. oh, and it's also functional and unique.
All you do is roll the date back to a day prior to today and everything works perfectly. This is a decent fix until they clean this up. Anything you do still uses today's date though, which is good.
I love how ANYTHING Palm related causes people to come out to throw dirt on a grave that doesn't exist.
That said, this shouldn't dissuade anyone who was planning on getting an AT&T Pre Plus from getting one. The app catalog will be fixed before the phone launches, and every rewiew I've read basically says it's the same Pre that's been out since January with less damage prone hardware.
Get the phone. You'll enjoy it, and WebOS style multitasking is everything you'd hope for and more. Combined with the ability for a GSM phone to use data while using the voice features, and you have a phone that actually makes me consider giving up my Sprint Pre for a phone on another network.
it is fixed now.
Some users are repoting is fixed and I also checked and is fixed for me too
Thank you for posting this story Engadget! Can't let Palm fall behind on their Customer support for us people!!!
I bought Need For Speed last night from the App Catalog around midnight, it downloaded and installed ok, but then about an hour later, I tried to install this other app, and it said "Install Failed." I thought they were updating or doing whatever to their servers or something, so I waited until morning to try it again. I restarted my phone to see that I had been signed out of my Palm Profile, it then gave me an option to erase all my data or something else and restoring all backed up data, so of course, I chose the latter. I had to go through setup again, telling me my phone had been activated, I'm like, "You got to be kidding me?" Not even a week into buying my Palm Pre Plus for Verizon and this happens?
So, every app from the App catalog will not install, so all I have is the default apps that came with the phone when I got it, such as VZ Navigator and such.
As long as Palm is working their butt off to get this problem fixed, then I'm a satisfied customer.
And just so everyone knows, I did choose the Palm Pre over the new iPhone that will be coming out next month, and also over the HTC Droid Incredible. I find the WebOS to be one of my favorite mobile OS' of all time. I've had the iPhone before, and it's good.
The Pre's battery does suck, which is why I bought the Seidio 2600mAh extended battery for the Pre, instead of 5 hours of usage that i got before, I now get around 12 hours, and that is me surfing the web a lot, watching youtube videos, using the camera, texting, MMS, you name it.
@jzetz fine, is fixed now
My apps are successfully Installing now!!!!! Cheers to Palm for fixing this critical issue in less than 24 hours! Now that is customer service!!!!! +++
I am one happy Palm Pre Plus owner right now :)
@jzetz Thanks for reporting back. Sorry you had the problem. I commented early on that people were panicing about not being able to install or update apps and doing a full erase. That was before I found out about folks like you. So I apolpgize to those folks.
I LOVE my Pre. 7 months and no real hardware problems, just a cosmetic crack. No oreo at all, on my Sprint Pre.
@BoyFabulous
Agree. I like the compact, sleek design of the Pre as it is. If it were any bigger, it'd probably look stupid in my pocket (and prompt some of those ". . . or are you just glad to see me?" comments).
Also, the portrait slider is what really distinguishes the pre from the rest of the pack.
Let's watch, as this Palm aquisition drags HP down, too.
Sounds like AT&T infected Palm's app store.
Haha. I have an iPhone but was seriously considering getting these just to lower our bill. It seems like it doesn't matter anymore what you buy they either overpriced - locked down - or offer crappy bug ridden service/software. I am going back to smoke signals. Sure it sucked if you didn't have matches buy hey...
PS. Palm had the potential to be great but seem to be able to only hang on by a thread. Shame really. For some reason they remind me of Beos.
palm's dead anyway. that is why apple finally let AT&T carry it. But don't expect a good Android phone anytime soon from AT&T (the Nexus One was not "officially" supported by AT&T). The day you see a viable alternative to the iPhone on AT&T means that the iPhone is going to be available on a different carrier in the near future. The bullying and anti-competitive practices are just one of the reasons I will never buy an apple product again.
@unf8605
"i will never buy another apple product again" he says.
Wise Man :)
@unf8605 *gets on high horse*
Applez is teh eeeveeeellllzzz!!!!!
Wait... WebOS has a Wells Fargo mobile banking app? Where's the Android app????
Yep, everything is installing a-ok again.
as if we don't already have too few apps in the app catalog. now there's none. good job Palm.
Works now. O2 UK
This problem was fixed last night, less than 24hrs after it was discovered, with user community discovered workarounds within hours. Yet Engadget has not updated the article's title. Precentral.net was all over this. Granted, they focus on the Pre, but still it was addressed quickly and Palm should get some credit for that.
Also, why was there no article of the grass roots homebrew community raising $6000 to be shared amongst homebrew developers? Or the launching on AT&T?
@Lego123 Lego, sorry to say but this really is a form of spamming. Posting it on an article about WebOS makes it a little bit trollish as well. Just sayin'.
