Palm Pre Plus launched on AT&T
The boardroom drama behind the HP acquisition wasn't the only Palm news today -- the company also launched the AT&T Palm Pre Plus. No surprises here -- it's going to $149, decidedly more than Verizon's $29 with free Mobile Hotspot service -- but hey, at least it's out there, and you get a free Touchstone in the deal, so that's nice.

Breaking News: WebOS up and running on PC hardware
http://www.precentral.net/webos-and-running-pc-hardware
@victorvelasco1
True! I say get rid of the Pixi altogether.
@DmitryNYC -- "True! I say get rid of the Pixi altogether."
Palm only makes 2 phones... you want them to get rid of one of them? :)
I remember when Palm ruled the corporate world with their various Treos. Palm is a shell of its former self... now just patent portfolio for HP.
@Beatnik For fucks sake, even on a beefy laptop it takes forever to boot. WebOS has a ways to go (as in optimization) before it'll ever be considered for mainstream. Just my $0.02.
@barkerja I'll take you to the candy shop I'll let you lick the lollipop - my 50 cents.
@Michael Scrip
Last i checked Apple only makes 1 Phone and they are dominating!
@manifest3r
Welcome to 2009, AT&T. Oh wai...
All I have to say is:
Sent from my Palm Pre Plus on AT&T, bitches
evo is overated
@account5 According to you, everything is overrated.
@DmitryNYC -- "Last i checked Apple only makes 1 Phone and they are dominating!"
Exactly. But that strategy clearly doesn't work for everyone....
Do you think it was a good idea for Palm to throw away their success with the Treo, and bet all the money on the Palm Pre exclusive to Sprint for the first year?
Funny you bring up Apple... Palm WAS competing with Apple... and Palm made bad decisions.
So bad... that they practically went bankrupt and had to get bought by a computer company.
@Michael Scrip
1st: You don't have to quote me every time you reply towards me...i see the @DmitryNYC...which means you're talking to me about what i said last.
2nd: Palm Treo was a success...until the iPhone and people realized how outdated the phone was.
3rd: I don't think i ever mentioned they weren't competing against Apple. And one of Palms mistakes was the Pixi, so get rid of it and release something better than the Pre. Just like Palms mistake in hiring a horrible company to produce their ads for the Pre...so what did they eventually do? Got rid of them...but sadly it was too late. Blackberry has many phone, one of which was a Blackberry Pearl, last i checked it's not on the market anymore! Reason: Not a great product, no need for it to exist.
AND FINALLY...i'll let the ranks on the posts speak for themselves.
BTW: I've been with palm all my life. I have a Treo 600 --> 650 --> 755p --> And now i have a Palm Pre. WebOS is probably the best OS for the mobile market out there. Reason palm needed to get bought out by a company was because of bad advertising, going exclusively with sprint, and releasing garbage like Pixi, rather then announcing a new WebOS phone revamped like Apple does with the iPhone every year.
@DmitryNYC
Good points... although the Pearl is coming back:

@Smart People Play Tuba I'm little late to reply but I'm with you, and loving my pre+ on at&t
@the bandit
And yet they aren't even a telecom or cell-phone company...seems they're doing something right to be in 3rd and rising. The argument here wasn't who's first, but why is apple making sales with 1 product and palm can't make sales with 2 products.
The fact that Palm & RIM have been in the industry for ages and are Cellphone companies and Apple to release a phone and do this much damage, with ONLY 1 PHONE on ONLY 1 CARRIER, while RIM & Palm were allover tells me that business wise, Apple is doing something right.
Palm was in the dust with their PalmOS...and it killed them bad. WebOS was supposed to revive them, but due to some bad moves by the company they went straight back to the gutter.
RIM was holding it's own strictly due to the Blackberry Services, had it not been for the Blackberry Services (Ping E-Mail, BBM, etc...) RIM OS is and has been just as outdated as PalmOS. The fact that RIM didn't decide to do anything about their outdated OS until now allowed Apple to come into the market and put itself as a leader in smartphone sales. All i'm saying is that if Apple got to expand to Verizon and other carriers, with 1 phone they would and possible could become extremely close to being #1 is sales of smartphones.
@the bandit
Oh let me add that Apple doubled in their smartphone sales since last year and are rising...they will most likely surpass RIM very shortly. And if apple expands to Verizon, they will become #2 only behind Symbian and RIM will become 3rd, and if RIM doesn't do something about releasing a NORMAL CAPACITIVE TOUCHSCREEN PHONE, Google's Android will also get the chance to catch up and surpass RIM. Touchscreen phones have become a norm and RIM seems to refuse to do anything about it. And the Storm is a disgrace to all touchscreen phones.
@manifest3r It's like the time when I bought a Daewoo...
@Smart People Play Tuba
So AT&T is good now? I see how it works. AT&T sucks when Apple uses them and people want Verizon but now that the Pre is on it, AT&T is awesome and Verizon is the expensive carrier? I imagine something must have changed overnight to upgrade their entire US network infrastructure for this to be the case. Way to go AT&T.
@TinWard
AT&T has always been good in my area. It depends on where you live. They didn't know jack sh17 about the Pre on Sunday (the guy helping me had never even HELD one, much less opened one, or installed a SIM; way to go on training your staff, AT&T) and it took a frickin HOUR-AND-A-HALF to get out the door with my Pre, but yes, the network here is fine.
Isn't verizon supposed to be the more expensive carrier?
@I Fling Poo Yea in terms of your monthly bill (aka the part that really counts). They do buy one get one free all the time for there phones, which is smart because while you get a free smartphone your bill also increases a lot.
yeah there is a cost difference but here I sit 5 plus miles from even the nearest house on my verizon pre plus with zero problems.....try that on at&t
@medicmechanic I believe att and verizon have pretty much identical pricing. sprint and tmobile are cheaper, though. i recently worked for verizon and they have what's known as a 1 cent guarantee. basically, take the price of any att service, and verizon will be 1 cent cheaper. ex: data on att is $30, 29.99 on verizon.
@local44
I sit about 100 yards from Lake Michigan in BFE and get 2 bars on ATT and NOTHING on VZW...
This whole who has better coverage issue is all subjective.
This isn't iPhone news...
iPhone was so 2007.
Now its the android revolution! Then hopefully the reawakening of WebOS!
Gotta keep the competition going...
@Kamil R whats an iphone? Woooot android :)
2007: Phone Wars: The Phantom of the Apple
2010: Phone Wars: Attack of the Android
2013: Phone Wars: Revenge of WebOS
2016: Phone Wars: A New OS
2019: Phone Wars: The Apple Strikes Back
2022: Phone Wars: Return of the WindowsPhone
@manifest3r
OMG... I give you all my internets!
@Kamil R
RIM: iPhone was 2008 and we are two thousand so late...
APPLE: If they don't have an "i" they blew it.
ANDROID: May the Force be with you, because I now lead the Crew. With my Super Droid Powers, you will sweat six towels. So don't try to catch up, don't make go all Jedi. I will break both of you with my Froyo with Real YouTube!
@manifest3r
Someone should totally make a Star Wars, smartphone wars mashup. Apple/AT&T is obviously the Empire. Android represents the droids (Verizon even licensed the Droid trademark). We just have to find roles for RIM, WebOS, and WP7.
@manifest3r
Darth Steve's Assistant: At last we will reveal ourselves to Microsoft. At last we will have revenge.
Obi-Ballmer: I have to admit that without the Droids, it would have not been a victory.
YodGates: Victory? Victory you say? Master Obi-Ballmer, not victory. The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Begun the Phone War has.
PalmAnakin HPwalker: I'm going there to end this war. Wait for me until I return. Thing's will be different, I promise. Please wait for me.
@jakey.
Web OS = Jedi Scum
Windows Phone 7= Rebel Scum
RIM= Bantha Fodder
@manifest3r
Awesome. This is how things could turn out but tech history always tells us that there is a surprise player we have not even thought of yet. Who expected google to be making phones (G1, Nexus One), HP buying palm when most expected a HTC bid.
At this rate Nike will enter the OS Market as 'A New OS
Governor Applarkin: The Palm Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor AT&T has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Treos have been swept away.
Mark Hurd Solo (HP CEO) to Pluke HPwalker: Hokey religions and ancient keyboards are no match for a good OS at your side, kid.
Darth Jobs: I sense something; a presence I've not felt since...
PHlambacca: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh! (Millenium WebOS is born)
Darth Jobs: [interupting] Droids do not concern me, Admiral. I want that WebOS, not excuses.
Emperor: We have a new enemy, the young Rebel who destroyed the iDeathPhone. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of PalmAnakin HPwalker.
Darth Jobs: The force is with you, young HPwalker. but you are not a Jedwindows yet.
(HPalm, Microsoft merge to defeat the AT&T Empire)
YodGates: No more training do you require. Already know you, that which you need.
PHLuke: Then I am a Jedwindows.
Yoda: No. Not yet. One thing remains. Jobs. You must confront Jobs. Then, only then, a Jedwindows will you be. And confront him you will.
AT&T Emperor: [to PHLuke] Ah, yes. A Jedwindows weapon, much like your father's. By now you must know that your father can never be turned from the Dark Side. So will it be with you.
PHLuke: You've failed, Your Highness. I am a Jedwindows. Like my father before me, who use to have the Windows Force beating in his Treo Core.
@manifest3r
You sir, win all the internets.
@manifest3r
That was probably one of the best comments I've read on Engadget!
@manifest3r
Hopefully by 2022 cellular telephones will be a thing of the past. Our minds will all be wirelessly interconnected to the internet and facebook will know every intimate detail about everyone in the world. Facebook will feed all of our personal information to advertising partners, and ads for the Kin will be directly uploaded to our minds regardless of whether or not we fit the market for it.
@TikiTeko
lol
wow. You'd be better off dropping Att, paying the early termination fee then going with Verizon. I have an iphone and im thinking about it. Love the phone HATE the dropped calls. FIX IT!
Switch to T-Mobile?
lulz
@pvito
Have you ever thoughts that it might just be your iPhone?
@Drybones5 (Nexus Boy)
You mean my iphone in particular? Never though of it being a general iphone problem since the first 7 or so months of owning the phone I didn't drop that many calls at all. It's getting worse in my area (Boston, MA) Besides Att admits its their fault and is currently spending billions (according to them) on upgrading their network.
@pvito It can easily be your phone, me and a friend both got our iPhones at the same time and he drops calls at an alarming rate, while mine is pretty solid. It doesn't matter where we're at either. It might just be your phone
I remember when I wanted this for sprint...love the OS, too bad the hardware isn't there
@Want an upgrade
Yeah. webOS is definitely one of the best moible OSes, but the hardware just stinks.
@Want an upgrade I remember I bought it full price unsubsidized, thank GOD for that 30 day refund period. Also, I might've kept it if they used glass instead of polished plastic. Pres aren't made to last.
@Want an upgrade Yup I had a Pre on Sprint for about a month and a half, the OS is nice and intuitive but the Pre just sucks. I sold it on ebay and I'm waiting on the EVO. I'm really surprised Palm just stuck with their hardware even when its gotten such a beating in user reviews. Maybe more people love it but they just don't speak up.
