Samsung's AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010
If you want the dish on what's happening with mobile displays, Lee Woo-Jong, VP for marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, is as good a person to ask as any. The chap has been telling the Reuters Global Technology Summit that his company has finally gone into the black with its AMOLED production line, and that its research projects a 50 percent jump in smartphone shipments in 2010 relative to 2009. This is expected to boost demand, which is already exceeding supply, for high-quality displays. Samsung says shortages might be experienced all the way until next year, but has reiterated its belief that AMOLED is the future with a $2.15 billion investment into expanding its production lines, while also predicting a 30-fold growth in shipments of such displays by 2015. Every handset out there looking like the Wave? We could learn to live with that.

Does the phone give you a disease?
@ComeShot No, but the people can give IT disease(dust)
@ComeShot
probably not, but it does seem to be popular with ninjas.
@ComeShot Storm Shadow's twin daughters secretly work inside Samsung.
@ComeShot
AMOLEDs are made by ninjas?
Gooooooooo Team!
@n0ne Venture?
Though given the context Team Ninja seems much more appropriate. DOA Extreme AMOLED?
I thought it was all about SUPER ACTIVE MATRIX ORGANIC LIGHT EMMITING DIODES.
@tobsmonster2
Apparently those aren't profitable yet, hence, no Engadget article ;)
It looks like they are going to do the M.I.B. flash thing, but they're covering the wrong part of their face.
@Khalid Shahin
Thats because they are ninjas and are not susceptible to puny flash bangs and those are not M.I.B thingy. They are ninja ID cards to show their real face to known members of ninja clans. This way they can marry other fellow ninjas without removing their mask. Its tradition.
@Khalid Shahin
Mear mortals don't understand the Ninja way.
@Khalid Shahin
funny - seeing samsung displaying something and not having a super attractive models doing it. well, maybe they are models under the suit.
@bolezhinkov
just having a bad hair day.
Hopefully they will be Super AMOLED, because I can't stand my Zune HD outside...
@Vaio
where can i get anti-glare film from? I would love that for my zune hd. its not impossible to see in sunlight, but its an obvious difference.

@masta vaan
Agreed. AMOLED technology needs to address three major problems.
The biggest problem is outdoor viewing...Samsung claims to have solved that with "SuperAMOLED" but I am skeptical, although since I've never seen one of these displays in person, I can't give a final opinion on it. The second problem is cost, and the third problem is pixel burnout \ image burn. If they can solve these problems, more power to them. I think it will take at least 2 years for this tech. to fully mature though.
@DoctarPeppar SUPER AMOLED has 85% less reflectivity.... believe me, they've solved the problem already. I only hope the Q4 Gingerbreads get it. It's a dealbreaker to me. The display is one of the most imp components of a smartphone, and Super AMOLED isn't a small step like OLED-->AMOLED, but it's pretty significant.
@TareG
SuperAMOLED reflects sunlight much less than AMOLED they say. I believe them. But I never held an AMOLED device in my hands before, only LCD. Only if those two are equally bad under sunlight than I might be able to imagine how good SuperAMOLED might be.
@SeeKo I was at a Samsung Event last month, where Samsung Wave and Galaxy S were displayed - the Super AMOLED works fine in direct sunlight.
All they need to do is figure out how to make them viewable in sunlight and I'd be glad to have one in a phone. Till then I'll stick with the current displays.
@Minions
They did figure it out!
@Minions They already did. It's called Super-AMOLED.
@Minions Yeah, Super AMOLED is what you're looking for. It's in the Samsung Wave and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S.
@Minions please dont be fooled by pretty screens you wont be getting any updates on those phones period samsux dont care i bought a behold 2 with promises of a update to 2.1 by every reps, countless samsung promotion videos and just got news i get an update in july to 1.6 never again htc from now on
OLED SCREEN ON IPHONE PLEASE!
Well, I don't think it's gonna happen.
@iantolee
Maybe IPhone G5?
@iantolee They won't until they can do SUPER Amoled, or some other similar new tech. They won't use AMOLED because it's not good in sunlight.
@mianmian I don't think apple will invent AMOLED until at least G6
MORTAL KOMBAT!
@Teslanaut GET OVER HERE!
Screw Samsung for announcing they are not going to upgrade the behold 2 to a 2.1 OS. They need to treat their customers better.
@psychoace
Or customers need to learn not to buy anything from Samsung and LG.
@psychoace
You shouldn't blame Samsung. Blame the carriers. Samsung only makes phones that are customized for each carriers' preferences. The carriers are the ones who decides to upgrade your OS or not.
@ConceptVBS Wrong the carrier only distributes the update. The manufacture does all the developing and determines if the phone is worth the investment of the update. There is no reason the carrier would ever say no to an update unless they had to pay for it which why would they pay for it.
Anyway luckily I got this phone for free (won it). Now I can feel good about not putting any money in Samsung pocket.
Maybe now that the division has some money to play around with, Samsung can start making a TV screen or two.
@Dante of the Inferno
Samsung did announce that they will start producing 42 in OLED TV screens in the near future. Their 5.5 Generation plants are up and running and ready to start mass production.
@ConceptVBS yeah, past few days there were quite a few stories saying 2011.
So I guess you could say that AMOLED is finally going to see the light of day... ironic, no?
There's a new kid in town: OLET - Organic Light-Emitting Transistor
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/05/what-the-heck-is-olet-technology-and-will-it-replace-oleds.php
@kinster02
Or how about this one? ;-)
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/06/organic-light-emitting-transistors-might-make-us-forget-all-abou/
@Vaio пошёл на хуй
Sammy should just stick to making awesome displays for everyone else as a supplier and leave the phone making to the people that know how to do it :)
Samsung is wrong, AMOLED isnt the wave of the future. As with LED and OLED, someone will come along and add a few more characters to the acronym again.
ABCDEFGAMOLED!!! ZOMG!!!
Conjoin this with Gorilla Glass and i'm sold! I swear I treat my Droid like a red headed step child and the screen has not a scratch on it.
As a Nexus One user, I sure as hell AMOLED isn't the wave of the future. I'll take the somewhat washed out color on an iPhone 3GS- or hell, an iPAQ 3600!- to having a screen that's almost unusable outdoors. Even at the brightest setting I need to get a shadow cast over my N1's screen to be able to use it- and even then it's a pain.
@areichow
My FREE shiaty Samsung Impression with AMOLED shows just fine in sunlight
Rogue FTW.
I love my screen, its awesome watching movies. Youtube, sprint tv, espn, etc. The whole can't see in the sunlight is a lil rough but not a deal breaker for me(obvisously). I just cast a shadow or use voice commands. In never really outside during the day, I work nites, so it doesn't drive me bonkers like the other blind people who are complaining(I kid I kid).
To those who haven't seen one in action it is truly an awesome tech for mobile phones. Uses less energy and after seeing a few super amoled screens the future is promising.
