Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks'
Why, thanks Google! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company's official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that's Froyo for the inexperienced) will be "made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks," and it'll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the "next few weeks." That's music to our ears, and if you're unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here.

AWESOME
@wakeup
So will this thing be on the HTC evo4g?
^^,
@wakeup - Indeed! I'm glad Google hasn't forgotten about us.
@Technologeee
I just jizzed a little bit of Froyo
@Technologeee
That shall take a little longer, considering HTC is bound to transfer Sense on Froyo. Let's just hope it's not 6-months long though...
I like how Google announces and then releases their new version, unlike Apple which announces and then waits 6 months.
Love how the N1 gets first dibs on these updates and rightfully so since it is the G’s own branded bad boy. Now Google hurry up will ya. There are N1 rebel forces on the death star network in need of some brag’able anti fruit goodness. If I was the Google push-master what better way to soften an iPhone 4th gen launch than with a surgical 2.2 update to all AT&T N1 devices ;^)... After all many revolutions start from inside right?
@Technologeee : Yes, one way or the other it will be, stay strong my brother. :)
@Flanjygo Yeah, I'm not sure euro hero owners would agree. Do your homework a little more thoroughly before chatting butt.
@commenter7
You jizz frozen yogurt?! Darwin would be proud.
@Trick202
Take your own advice and do your homework.
Trick, Google doesn't have dibs on the Hero. That is all HTC; The Nexus One gets updates because it is google's own phone. It doesn't have to go through any corporation.

@Flanjygo
Where do you get 6 months?
@Flanjygo You mean like the OTA app pushing and music streaming Google announced... but may not even be out this year?
2.2 is great, but both companies work the PR machine to death.
I wish they would give an exact date. My N1 is craving some Froyo.
@plbelanger I'm in your same boat. A 'few weeks' doesnt give off that 'soon' vibe.
@plbelanger Seriously! A few weeks could be frikking 21 days! I can't wait that long goddammit! Seriously Google - expected better from ya'!
It's sadistic to expect people to wait so frikkin long after the advert without a specific date.
And I'll have to wait until Gingerbread is released to actually have it on my EVO...
@reallynotnick At least you don't have an X10. They have to wait till Q4 for 2.1
@plbelanger Your telling me! Did I ever pick the wrong phone :(
@plbelanger And knowing Sony and updates, it might actually be Q1 or Q2 of 2011.
This is worth an entire engadget blog post? Who doesn't know it's coming "soon"? Few weeks could mean anything.
@dii15 hopefully it means: More than one week but less than a month.
@dii15 I think its worth a post. A time frame coming from an official source.
That was quick... =D
Is there any change in multitouch on the nexus one?
@BigDog no indications to my knowledge, what were you hoping for?
@dii15 A better support for typing for mulitouch. Noticed that (specially going from my old iPhone 3gs/edge(i had both) to n1), that i have to release my finger from one letter to press the next, which is pretty darn slow :(
@BigDog that's a hardware issue. Just call HTC and they'll send you a new one.
@BigDog I just use Swype instead of the stock Android/HTC keyboard.
@BigDog
get Smart Keyboard app. it does exactly/more than what you want.
Can someone tell me how can I get the update to nexus one if I rooted mine with desire rom?
You gotta put the stock rom back on it. that way you'll get the ota. this thread will show you how

Nexus One Owners are smiling right now
@AlienSix Oh how I wish the N1 materialized for Verizon :/
@AlienSix Indeed I am :-)
Wait a tick... Yesterday, Adobe said N1 AND Droid in Jun... Now Google's saying it won't even be available to OEMs for a few weeks? Which is it?
@ircmaxell From what i understand, N1 is in direct control of Google, so we the n1 owners get the update automatically. The rest of the android phones, well, the OEM (stock) version of the android will go to the companies so they can add their "UI" to it.
@BigDog The Droid is stock Android (no customs)... You are correct that the N1 is controlled by Google, but check out this quote:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/196727/first_look_android_22_froyo_with_flash_player_101.html
"Announced this morning at Google I/O in San Francisco, the update will initially be available to Motorola Droid and Nexus One owners in June."
@ircmaxell
yeah but motorola is the one who has to distribute it, liability reasons i recon.
@ircmaxell
Well, last time I checked, June is only a couple weeks away.
SWEET !!!!!!!
This means by the time I get my EVO 4G and kick my iPhone and AT&T to the curve I will have this update.
Can't wait!!
As for apple and AT&T GOOD RIDDANCE!!
@Juggernaut408
It didn't say anything about the EVO. the EVO has Sense on it so you have to wait on HTC.
@Juggernaut408 good luck. Htc's track record with sense updates haven't been very good. I'd say EVO 4ggets this in q3 At best
@Juggernaut408 Youre getting your evo for Christmas? Nice one!
@Trick202 LOL +1 for being a smartasS and + another 1 for probably being right (although I shouldn't be giving a "+" anything for an update taking way to long for HTCs flagship devices)
@lazaro i guess im confused as to why you thought that Sense and 2.2 are related in terms of release... Google isnt going to wait for Sense UI to update to release Froyo, the EVO will have it the day it comes out... senseUI is a completely different entity
The fact that Nexus One is getting 2.2 so quickly is why plain vanilla Android is the way to go.
So HTC still hasn't even SEEN this to begin their Sense UI porting yet then? Why can't Google let it's partners in on this stuff WAY early?
@Tes
My guess is Google wants to make sure it actually works before letting other people build upon it. If it's already in shape for HTC now, they would've released it to the Nexus Ones already.
