@joe23521
I work in development...there is no reason alpha code cannot be seen by someone building another related component so that they can at least begin to develop their code. At no point doe this mean HTC or Motorola get any say in the underlying code, but they can at least stay ahead of the game.
@Tes There's no incentive for Google itself to let HTC or Motorola in on the action early. All they care about is getting as many people on the internet as possible. That'll happen whether or not HTC's phones are on 2.1 or 2.2.
See? this is why I wanted a N1 on Sprint..... ugh
That was fast but since this is the Google phone it was for sure to get the the Froyo treatment.
I want a Nexus One... But I have Obsolescence Fear. I was suckered into buying the Dev1 G1, which was dumped after 1.6.
@Critic2029
the nexus 1 is their flagship phone. i really doubt they'd drop that puppy anytime soon. its the phone they hand out to dev's as well.
@Critic2029
If you have obsolescence fear, you shouldn't be into gadgets.
@joe23521
I've got no problem buying something new every year or two, but they quit making updates to the G1 within 6 months.
@Critic2029
Your g1 has been brought to life with cyanogenmod...2.1 is a go...he's also already talked about 2.2 to the g1 with cm 6
@Critic2029 Consodering there are still Android phones released with less spec than the N1, I don't think it will be abandoned that quick. The G1 was, the G1. It has the lowest end reference hardware for android. N1 is a different beast.
@Critic2029 Thats why we root devices to keep them running on newer software ..
IMO the G1 is a legendary phone in the android community and the legend just keeps growing with each port of newer OS to it
well I can sense a lotta roms on the way after this. I woulda got an N1 but I wasn't doing T-Mobile or AT&T to get it.
Awesome! Can't wait for the update! I'm currently in the car with co-workers on our home from a week at a client and using PDANet through USB. Having the wi-fi option will be sick.
Sounds pretty sexy to me... especially while I type this on my N1
@MAPCINQ
I just approved of your comment and am currently typing this on my N1, too!
Lawlz
Awesome! Now all 80,000 N1 owners can rejoice while the 2 million Droid owners can wait about 4 months. Nice.
@V1cKdB Motorola and verizon are always a bad choice
@stabbytheicepic
Please elaborate. I don't understand rubbish.
@V1cKdB I read somewhere that besides the N1, the Droid would also be one of the first to receive the update. I think I read it on AndroidCentral.
EVO + Froyo are like Ronald and Nancy
Anjelica Huston & Jack Nicholson. To keep them apart would be a sin!
Evo should get Froyo right away if HTC knows what's good for them. Boyz & Girlz, Is it worth the risk of buying an Evo on June 4th?
Does anyone know if there is anywhere that lists possible bug fixes in android 2.2. Seems that any wi-fi bug fixes were completely skipped over on the 2.1 update. My motorola droid can't connect using wifi if WPA encryption is on, whereas no problems with anything else connecting to the motorola SBG900 cable modem / router. Contacted Motorola. They said the Motorola droid is incompatible with the Motorola SBG900 using WPA. Go figure!!! I was advised to drop my security down to WEP. Was hoping it was an android issue and it would have been something getting fixed in Android 2.2. Now I'm not so sure and looks like it'll never be fixed. Saw some were using WPA TKIP encryption on the router, rather than AES and it worked for them, so I guess I'll try that first before giving up entirely.
You know, some 50000 barrels of oil are spewing into the Gulf Of Mexico each day, and I do try to not worry too much about not being first in line for the next Android release.
is there a way too root droid incredible yet? i want wifi tethering now
Isn't it silly that instead of actually caring about user experience that a large number of people are only concerned about
1. Bragging rights
2. Being pawns for companies by siding with one or the other mindlessly without realising that instead of benefitting themselves, they are now volunteering to be salesmen for a company.
Stupid
@teab i feel like youre implying that the Android 2.2 user experience is somehow inferior to something and that people getting it are only doing it to be trendy... is that what youre saying?
If so i dont care Android > than everything available and its not trendy at all
Hoping it makes its way to Verizon before they kill my Eris. super happy with the recent 2.1 upgrade bit 2.2 looks even better
Wow. I have to say, i'm becoming very impressed with google at least from an android perspective. Now if they could just get more phone makers on board to just use the straight vanilla UI.
B-but I want it now!
What about the Hero from sprint I know they just released 2.1. I hope it come out for the hero, but if the past repetes then we will get it right before 2.3 comes out. Any info would be nice.
I don't think I believe them. If it was just Google, sure. But since they're supposedly shipping Flash support with this release, I'm betting they'll be sitting on their asses waiting for Adobe. The test phones reviewers have seen don't even have hardware acceleration for Flash in them yet, and as a result blow through batteries fast and get blazing hot. I assume they won't ship it in that state, and I'm guessing that means we'll all be yelling about how long Adobe is taking soon enough...
As expected. Thing is, anybody knows when Google is stopping the online sales of the N1?
What Google (and OEMs) should be doing is abstracting away the differences between hardware platforms so that the amount of code that has to be ported to get 2.x on a device is much smaller. For any phone without custom UIs like SENSE or BLUR, it should be possible to just port low level bits for the kernel and hardware and maybe a few things for the cellular radio and then layer an unchanged copy of the raw 2.x code on top of that.
My guess though is that the carriers are the ones responsible for the mess that Android is in (by delaying firmware updates for crap like "carrier acceptance testing")
Froyo on the HTC Hero soon! (In the coming weeks :-D)
HTC BUILDS the N1.... They already have the N1 with 2.2... HTC obviously already has 2.2... With that said, when I get my Evo, I will FLIP the F*CK out if ANY other phone outside of HTC's phones(especially the Moto Doid) get the update BEFORE the HTC phones.... THEY ALREADY HAVE 2.2!!! How the hell could the Moto Droid get 2.2 BEFORE HTC when they ALREADY have 2.2 in their hands and just have to throw sense in it?? I will seriously be pissed off.... I already am because I know that's EXACTLY what's going to happen...
@JerzyIroc
1. calm down
2. obviously thats going to happen because the evo runs sense. since this is a new android version htc will have to make changes to sense to make it work properly on 2.2
3. the n1 and droid will get it first because both run standard vanilla android, so there won't be any delay (besides verizon delaying it for you droid owners)
I'm curious to know if this 2.2 update will be available to Samsung Moment users at around the same time as everyone else?
i just got the motorola droid and i can't switch again because i already traded a dreadful blackberry tour for my droid. Please someone tell me that droid will get 2.2 Froyo because i just bought a Motorola Droid, Please.
@bf1sh24
