FastMac U-Socket delayed due to safety redesign, now going for $20
And here you were thinking this thing had vanished into the never-ending Lairs of Vaporwareville. Lucky for you, the gents and gals over at FastMac have been hard at work caving to the also never-ending list of demands from the UL and various other safety agencies. That means that the utterly brilliant U-Socket is indeed still on track for mass production, but it'll be slightly redesigned and stacked with a few bonus features by the time it hits the market. According to an update sent out to loyal pre-orderers (which can be seen in full after the break), the USB sockets have been relocated as a compliance measure, but now, they're of the SuperSpeed variety. Each one is also capable of 10W power (read: iPad-friendly) and it also smokes the EPA's Energy Star requirements. The modifications have pushed the expected ship date back to October, and the original $9.95 price has been bumped up to $19.95 -- though the company is quick to point out that each one is made in the US of A, and those who got in early will have their orders honored. An extra Hamilton for USB 3.0 and 10W charging? We're still as sold as ever.

Letter from FastMac regarding U-Socket status:
Dear [redacted],
Thank you for pre-ordering the TruePower U-Socket. The response to our pre-announcement of this product has been overwhelming, as has been the numerous industry awards we have won for it :-)
I wanted to email you to give you a progress update on our development. As you know, we have been working with the UL/ Safety Agencies to get this product certified and approved for sale in the US & Canada. They have asked us to make a number of changes, starting with a new look: see http://fastmac.com/usocket
In addition to relocating the USB connectors, the safety boards have also requested some other internal changes which will make the U-Socket safer & easier to manufacture. Since we were asked to redesign the U-Socket, we've gone back to the drawing board and rebuilt the product from the ground up to incorporate the following additional features:
a) USB 3.0
b) 10W Charging support so you can charge 1 iPad at full speed or 2 iPads @ half speed. This also means you can charge 2 iPhones at the same speed as Apple's AC adapter.
c) Energy Star- U-Socket meets and beats the EPA's Energy Star requirements by more than 10x their minimum when compared to the energy savings achieved by a typical Energy-Star compliant AC Adapter FYI, only 2 mobile phone manufacturers (Nokia & Samsung) make Energy-Star compliant AC adapters.
d) TruePower Technology- custom 'TruePower' energy efficient AC/DV converter and power management ICs
e) Custom UL-approved transformers that are smaller than even those found inside Apple's impossibly-small iPhone AC Adapter
All of these modifications/ upgrades will result in a reschedule of the shipping date to October end at the latest.
We apologize for the delay and understand that the new shipping date may alter your buying decision. We are committed to providing the safest, most compatible & highest quality products and this delay is necessary to comply with those goals. Should you wish to cancel your order, please let us know; please bear in mind that your current order guarantees you the price of $9.95 whereas later orders will be billed at $19.95 per U-Socket.
Thank you again for supporting FastMac and the U-Socket product line. As you know, we are one of the few, if only, accessory manufacturers left in the United States. You'll be glad to know that the U-Socket is not only designed in California, it is also built in California in our very own factory right here in San Francisco. We sincerely appreciate your support and look forward to contacting you within 2 months with a firmer ship date.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Nice
I do like the way they notify you that there will be delays unlike some companies who would only tell you about them after you contacted them.
@BigJayDogg3 USA and Canada :( why doesn't Mexico ever get anything that i legit... I guess ill have to deal with the pirate U-socket (possibly called tu-socket or you-socket over here) that is not tested and ruins my usb charging electronics
@wacktool
No, the last version looked nice. It actually seemed to be designed by a designer who cared about how his power outlet looked. This version looks more like a kid got curious and somehow managed to rig a usb hub into his power outlet and make perfect cuts off to the side of a normal outlet plate. I wanted the first version, but will pass on the second.
@wacktool I will b replaceing all the sockets n my home it's logical because about every handheld device has a USB cable so if I replace all sockets n my home me or my children will not have 2 worry about keeping our gadgets next to the computer any more this is a great idea
@wacktool
I don't know where you buy your electronics because I use pretty legit and certified charging solutions, in Mexico. The only real problem is getting stuff as soon as it's released in the US; still, have you ever heard of online shopping? It's fast and it's nice.
@wacktool I mean I like it.. but why are they using that old socket design?... Why not the Decora / Modern style?... They I would def. buy a few...
@wacktool Well now actually... I just clicked through their site and I see on the order page the Decora design... so I actually dont know which one is being sold...
@Conceyted So… you know better than Underwriters Laboratories?
@Arkv2 Best place I can think of to buy in Mexico, at least in my current city would be Best Buy or Home Depot, and they don't have many legit accesories. I also don't trust shipments i've had a few bad experiences.
@wacktool
im sorry but how the hell do you get data flow out of a usb port used for charging?
@wacktool
I'm curious as to exactly how they're cutting power to the transformer unless something's plugged in. It's either one hell of a small pressure switch (that will see a lot of traffic) or some circuit that detects maybe the resistance of the device plugged in, which would itself need a transformer to power it (kinda negating the whole 'it doesn't use juice unless plugged in' idea). Kinda makes me not want to throw these around my house because I like things that are really off when they say they're off.
woot! But still waiting for mine.

;o.o
@mm
i lol'd at the angry sockets :D
that face looks like they just caught their viwes in bed with somebody else
Still looks brilliant, even more so now. 20$ is fair IMO.
I wonder if Apple will allow the product to have that name?
@Argot
They'll almost have to sue just to protect the name. But will probably lose or not put up much of a fight.
@Argot unlikely as that's the company name and they've been around for a good while now
@Gonzie
Didn't help Mr. Nissan who ran a computer business of the same name. I think Apple has a chance to make life hard for FastMac
http://www.nissan.com (note, this site goes to the court decision not the car company)
@JamesR
Eh, looks like he's slowly getting the nissan.com domain back...sorry, my link wasn't meant as a plug for the site. Before it used to show the court decision.
@JamesR
Mr. Nissan got his domain back and he is allowed to post any comments he wants there about Nissan Motor -- but it still doesn't make up for all the time and $$ he lost for that ridiculous lawsuit. It's funny though, you think instead of doing that Nissan would have just said "hey can we please buy your domain name?" -- instead now whenever someone goes to nissan.com they can see the lawsuit information (lol -- to funny), instead of the car company's website :P
@JamesR
That website hurts my brain guts.
They look really surprised!
@stueck Pissed off is you ask me ;)
@richb93 yeah, depending on your viewing angle ^^
@stueck Either way, they don't look like the sockets in the UK. They look like 'The Scream'...
@stueck You would be too if two little rectangular bugs kept buzzing past your right ear!
Maybe I'm missing something, but if this is for charging, what difference does USB 3.0 make?
@slumcat It can push out more power.
@slumcat
Not only will USB 3.0 cables facilitate faster transfer speeds, but they’ll carry more power, too. The USB-IF recognizes the growing number of portable devices that charge via USB (cellphones, MP3 players, digital cameras), and have bumped the power output from about 100miliamps to 900 milliamps. That means not only will you be able to power more than 4 devices from a single hub, but the increase current will let you charge up heftier hardware as well.
It should come with some 8 ft USB extension cables as well. Because 99% of standard cables will be too short.
@slipdisc There is a length limit for USB, don't know if that's just for data, or if it has changed with USB 3...
@slipdisc
There is nothing like setting power sockets at bench level. Makes no sense to have em down near the floor; kid safety, old people, oh&s, easy access, easy to change.
Change ur life, go up
@Oli D Even so, the limit is over 16 ft.
@Oli D Yeah the spec says a little over 16ft.

Shipping is 7.75...WTF
Deal killer for me
Made in the USA! That's one of the main selling points for me. You don't see many accessories made the USA anymore...
@cprocjr
made in USA by non USA citizens.... Somehow I rather buy them imported.
@kingofwale Generally, US citizens work in US factories. And even if they didn't, the factory is still subject to US safety, health, and minimum wage regulations AND pay US taxes.
@kingofwale What? Says who?
Go away troll...
@kingofwale as long as they're legally allowed to work in the US, they'll be paying taxes.
will this USB charge the iPad?
because apparently Apple feels that most USB aren't worthy enough to charge its devices
@kingofwale
"Each one is also capable of 10W power (read: iPad-friendly)"
fail
@weirdo557 He doesn't fail, he or she is just the common Apple gadget owner, who just reads the title of the article, and then asks the questions.
@kingofwale I expect it will. I have numerous non-Apple chargers that will charge my iPad even when on. Problem is that the majority of third party, single device, chargers assume you are charging a cell phone or MP3 player, not a Tablet. They put out more than a typical PC USB port (500ma), but not enough for the iPad to be happy. Apple could have mitigated this by creating a coaxial charge port and it's own special power supply, rather than going with the 'standard' USB connector, with the 'non-standard' current draw. Actually my PC ports charge my iPad just fine, as long as the screen is off. Overnight when I'm not using it works for me.
Well, I wasn't gonna DIY when it was $10, but for @20 I will. You can go buy a GFI outlet for less than $2 (i've got extras around) and use some scrap usb parts too. Cost me nothing for the convenience. If I was renovating or building new I'd be all over this though- it's ridiculous (and highly inefficient) that I need to go get a whole separate brick when USB is rather ubiquitous.
I still want an NA-spec socket that has the same on/off switches for each outlet that much of the rest of the world has. Add that in and it's a total win.
Nonetheless, nice to see someone trying to improve things.
