FastMac U-Socket delayed due to safety redesign, now going for $20
And here you were thinking this thing had vanished into the never-ending Lairs of Vaporwareville. Lucky for you, the gents and gals over at FastMac have been hard at work caving to the also never-ending list of demands from the UL and various other safety agencies. That means that the utterly brilliant U-Socket is indeed still on track for mass production, but it'll be slightly redesigned and stacked with a few bonus features by the time it hits the market. According to an update sent out to loyal pre-orderers (which can be seen in full after the break), the USB sockets have been relocated as a compliance measure, but now, they're of the SuperSpeed variety. Each one is also capable of 10W power (read: iPad-friendly) and it also smokes the EPA's Energy Star requirements. The modifications have pushed the expected ship date back to October, and the original $9.95 price has been bumped up to $19.95 -- though the company is quick to point out that each one is made in the US of A, and those who got in early will have their orders honored. An extra Hamilton for USB 3.0 and 10W charging? We're still as sold as ever.

Letter from FastMac regarding U-Socket status:
Dear [redacted],
Thank you for pre-ordering the TruePower U-Socket. The response to our pre-announcement of this product has been overwhelming, as has been the numerous industry awards we have won for it :-)
I wanted to email you to give you a progress update on our development. As you know, we have been working with the UL/ Safety Agencies to get this product certified and approved for sale in the US & Canada. They have asked us to make a number of changes, starting with a new look: see http://fastmac.com/usocket
In addition to relocating the USB connectors, the safety boards have also requested some other internal changes which will make the U-Socket safer & easier to manufacture. Since we were asked to redesign the U-Socket, we've gone back to the drawing board and rebuilt the product from the ground up to incorporate the following additional features:
a) USB 3.0
b) 10W Charging support so you can charge 1 iPad at full speed or 2 iPads @ half speed. This also means you can charge 2 iPhones at the same speed as Apple's AC adapter.
c) Energy Star- U-Socket meets and beats the EPA's Energy Star requirements by more than 10x their minimum when compared to the energy savings achieved by a typical Energy-Star compliant AC Adapter FYI, only 2 mobile phone manufacturers (Nokia & Samsung) make Energy-Star compliant AC adapters.
d) TruePower Technology- custom 'TruePower' energy efficient AC/DV converter and power management ICs
e) Custom UL-approved transformers that are smaller than even those found inside Apple's impossibly-small iPhone AC Adapter
All of these modifications/ upgrades will result in a reschedule of the shipping date to October end at the latest.
We apologize for the delay and understand that the new shipping date may alter your buying decision. We are committed to providing the safest, most compatible & highest quality products and this delay is necessary to comply with those goals. Should you wish to cancel your order, please let us know; please bear in mind that your current order guarantees you the price of $9.95 whereas later orders will be billed at $19.95 per U-Socket.
Thank you again for supporting FastMac and the U-Socket product line. As you know, we are one of the few, if only, accessory manufacturers left in the United States. You'll be glad to know that the U-Socket is not only designed in California, it is also built in California in our very own factory right here in San Francisco. We sincerely appreciate your support and look forward to contacting you within 2 months with a firmer ship date.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

@Jazper Which world is that?
I've seen a whole bunch of countries and not a single wall socket with an on/off switch...
@HansImGlueck
Pretty sure we have those here in the UK. In fact, we do. So you've seen a whole bunch of countries and yet you've never been to jolly old England?

If I plugged a USB keyboard into that socket... what would happen?
@Plazmic Flame Nothing. No more than if you plugged a USB keyboard into an iPad power thingy, or any other USB power adapter. The keyboard would power up of course...they expect power.
@Plazmic Flame I'd hope to be able to surf the net on any TV in my house. If i have these plugs, apart from charging, my house better a freakin computer. High Speed Internet(Ethernet and Wi-Fi) in EVERY room, Nice Monitors/TVs, A server to store all the content, and terminals. *sigh* One can dream...
In the meantime, you could also get one of these. It lets you bring those USB ports with you, too: http://www.belkin.com/iwcatproductpage.process?product_id=400738
@John H Not enough power :(
Powered USB Output 5V/500mA each port
@HansImGlueck
That's standard USB power. So yes, it's not USB 3.0 and it won't power an iPad, but it's small, portable, and $20.
I had no idea about this...but the other day I was thinking, what if all the electrical outlets turned into usb ports? I think that would be much cooler! :D. and for $20 that isn't bad at all!
@gofightlose
that'd be a really bad idea. usb ports don't have transmit enough energy to take over current electrical ports. maybe future USB versions waaayy down the road, but right now? No, not at all.
USB 3.0 on a socket now is it?? nice!
Why do you need USB 3.0 for a charging port?
@Mars478
Might be for convenience so you can use USB 3.0 cables rather than having to bring a "legacy" cable just for charging. Could also be because the USB 3.0 spec includes a significant bump in how much power the ports have to supply.
USB 3.0 on a socket now is it?? nice! Faster transfer speeds, but for charging - that is well over the mark
$0.49 standard 20A outlet + $2 or 3 for a USB wall wart = a lot less than $20. With a wall wart you can take it with you good for any outlet. Doesn't seem like much of a deal
@Xing
You're paying for the R&D at this point. Have you ever noticed how the top of the line CPUs are always waay more expensive than the second best despite the speed difference not being any larger? Same idea.
(...)and it also smokes the EPA's Energy Star requirements.
Really? Is 'smokes' the word you want to use when describing an outlet?
I'd buy this if they had a decora style version.
It'd also be sweet if they made variations of these with other I/O too.
HA HA now you Android buttboyz gotta pay $10 mo so my iPad owning home's can get dey juice on. You bitches got pwned!
I like it, but it would have been lots cooler if the cable was integrated into the design (and possibly retractable back into the wall).
As it is now, you still need to supply your own cable... and if you are going to do that, might as well just plug that cable into your computer.
Still very cool for a 1st gen design.
Cool, but the actual design of the product is just weird to me. The placement of the USB ports looks totally random. It's not a huge issue or a deal breaker, but just lining up the ports with the power outlets would have made a big difference.
Not sure why the excitement. I'd be more excited if it were a surge protector, too...
No matter how old I get, outlets will still always look like little surprised faces to me. "Don't shock yourself" is literally what I read in their faces when I was a little kid.
Build a tamper resistant version and I'm in.
Those sockets always look disgusted to me...
@MAzr
It's new lame website!
As a licensed electrician, i'd suggest they make one Tamper resistant or child proof, to go along with the new electrical code.
"made in the US of A"
Hasn't meant a thing in over 20 years.
Except that most likely, it's garbage.
"FastMac U-Socket delayed due to safety redesign, "
This is silly, why not just get USB outlets on a power strip. This is about as smart as "Gun'n'Nuts."
Totally worth it. Can't wait
That customer service sounds great. This whole idea and the people involved are full of win!
Dear Fastmac: please design one that looks like the decorator style outlets I have in my house, and furthermore please combine it with the SAFETY STYLE DECORATOR OUTLET so it's friendlier with my daughters.
Do devices draw full or only low power from the USB ports on the U-Socket when fully charged?
The Energy Star web site says "In April 2008, EPA finalized Tier 2 for external power supplies with more stringent no-load and active levels, which became effective November 1, 2008. "
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=find_a_product.showProductGroup&pgw_code=ACD
does it charge and send info id love to re wire my home to be usb compatible but only if i can have hella memory and devices accessible from my upstairs computer or bedroom ipad dock or cellphone charger etc.
This is perfect, I have a single outlet near my nightstand which has to charge my Blackberry Bold, 30 GB Zune, Nintendo DS and still have plugs left to plugin my alarm clock and lamp.
$20 is a bit steep however, I'll wait and see if a similar product pops up on Dealextreme or brando.
just in time to be obsolete...
about 2 years after you install these, you'll be looking at it like it's a weird ancient plug type
Wonder if they'll ever make something like this:
