At this point, we don't even know if
HP's Slate is
still hitting the market -- but one thing we
do know is that there's no evidence to suggest that the company will be releasing it with
webOS instead of
Windows 7. In fact, the two platforms are so wildly different and targeted for such disjoint devices -- never mind the fact that HP and Palm aren't yet united in the legal sense of the word -- that there's virtually no chance that the existing Slate hardware could be effectively used in time for a near-term webOS tablet launch (at least, not a tablet that anyone would want to buy). There's word on
Gizmodo today that the Slate will be offered as a webOS device, but that appears to be a misinterpretation of a
DigiTimes report from HP Taiwan that the company intends to use Palm's operating system to underpin both "smartphones and tablets," while avoiding porting it to netbooks since they're "more similar in functions with traditional computers." Given the Slate's lukewarm reception, we can totally understand HP canning it in its current incarnation -- but you can't just drop a flashy mobile platform onto it and call it good. Interestingly, the
DigiTimes report goes on to say (on an unrelated note) that the Slate
will come to market before October, but it's unclear whether they're taking into account the most recent round of rumors that it's been deep-sixed; guess we'll know soon enough.
@pretol
"Isn't rumored" almost struck me as a double negative. It just sounds "off"
i was wondering when someone would clear this up. i saw so many different site running wild in two different directions with the same information
GOOD SHIT!
It's crap hardware anyways so who cares?
... So is a WebOS slate coming out or not?
WebOS may make it to a tablet. But there's no chance of it happening in in 2010.
I think these rumors are being put out to dissuade people from buying iPads.
It does not appear to be working.
C.
Let's face it. There is only one company reliable enough to come up with a tablet that can compete with iPad. Adobe, please buy JooJoo and make it happen!
Another false article by the woefully ignorant Jesus Diaz, surprise surprise.
@theinternetstom
Jesus does tend to talk right out of his Christ...
All articles on this subject should be stopped. To many rumors.
@derekdevine
The ironic thing, that the title of this article is about NOT having a rumor ("HP Slate ISN'T rumored to be switching from Windows 7 to webOS"). They don't even have a rumor, and they're still speculating. Journalism doesn't get any more ridiculous than this.
If I may say, it is certainly possible that Palm was already secretly working on a tablet version of webOS and that could have been a major reason for HP to buy them, knowing that the hardware was pretty mih done.
Or maybe it's just wishful thinking :(
Yet you dismiss the possibility that HP has been working on this prior to the buyout rumer and the WebOS already runs on x86 hardware. Getting this to run on a tablet should be pretty easy. HP could release the tablet whether or not they own Palm. They don't have to own Palm to do so. A simple "agreement/license" to allow them to use WebOS is all they need and is probably something that was worked out a long time ago. So yes, it's not impossible that a webos tablet would be out before Oct.
Ever since the announcement of the Exo PC Win 7 Slate, Ive lost all interest in the HP Slate. The Exo is better in every way (except for it only having 1 camera). Cant wait to hear more about it next month.
Wonderful watching the tech media make up their own news. Whatever gets you page views, no need for actual journalism.
Also Engadget once again displaying their hatred of all Wintel slates. How is the HP Slate getting a lukewarm reception when the latest youtube video has over 1.4 million views. What other HP product has anywhere near that amount of interest. The Apple fanboy media are doing a spectacular job torpedoing that interest by crafting stories of the products demise and it's move to a failing mobile OS. Congratulations on being Apples lapdogs.
Stop this pointless rumors, please; HP did not officially dismissed the W7 slate yet, period.
And by the way, the only lukewarm reception was a 'review' by an apple fanatic who admitted to have just booted the device and taken a few pics for a span of only 10 minutes.
These are the facts, the rest is bad journalism.
@0110110101100100
I agree but I still think the Exo PC Slate bests it thus far.
@timotim
and I agree, sir!
@timotim Does the EXO PC Slate have a stylus? No? Then they got it wrong. I want a freakin' pencil to write on my tablet. No, not a crayon, or a Q-tip, and I'm not an artist so finger painting doesn't excite me. If it is a portable productivity tool, I want to WRITE on it.
makes sense they bought palm, it would be like a giant palm device. Might be pretty good. Throw in the google pad and there will be a new market
Gizmodo is quickly becoming known for it's "misinterpretations." They (Gizmodo) call that "journalism."
THANK YOU!!!!
Everyone and his dog has been reporting the demise/conversion of the Slate to WebOS - all of this from the one post by Michael Arrington. It's even being reported as *confirmed* fact by stock market trading sites like The Street and Motley Fool. Those two in particular should know better.
It's far more likely that HP is going to release the Win7 slate in June or July - then a WebOS slate in September. Also, apparently, no one is aware that HP makes phones - the iPaq series, all based on WM 6.x - so it's not surprising that they're looking for a way to revive this product... and it's natural to move it onto a slate.
But the idea that it has to be one or the other is silly. It may end up being true that the Win7 slate is being dropped - but at the moment there just isn't any confirmation to this very unsubtantiated rumor.
Also - a LOT of people want a Win7 slate. Surprise.
Anyway, thanks again for reporting the facts in this situation. I'm glas someone finally did.
haha!! Another HP epic fail!!

Windows7-OS is an antiquated system with regard to operation mode and its graphical interface is almost the same since it was first Windows-OS (1995), therefore it is very difficult operation with the fingertips in a multi-touch screen, if you leave the hpSlate with Windows7-OS would force us to use a stylus
The power of the tablets is the ability to multi-screen it means to recognize multiple touch points while it is only possible with our fingers, it can not do a stylus
Windows7-OS, Linux-OS, Mac-OSx must evolve to a multi-touch interface, windows8-OS will be so, but while out .... iPHONE-OS will be taken much advantage
