LG Display busts out 84-inch 3DTV with 3,840 x 2,160 res, we want the 2D version
Yesterday we brought you Samsung's 19 inches of transparent AMOLED goodness, today LG counters with an 84-inch 3DTV boasting UHD resolution and a claim to being the world's biggest of its kind. To be honest, at that size you really can't get away with old reliable 1080p, so it's comforting to see LG's keeping pixel pitch in mind when designing its headline grabbers. In other news coming out of the SID 2010 show, LG is demonstrating a "liquid lens" TV that'll give you glasses-free 3D, though the details of how that works are a bit scarce, while the company's also pushing its IPS wares in a big way, with a 47-inch HDTV, a 32-inch pro monitor, and a 9.7-inch (sounds familiar) smartbook on show. Also at 9.7 inches, we have color e-paper that's slated for mass production before the end of the year, while that flexible e-paper from January is also making an appearance. A pretty comprehensive bunch of goodies from LG, we'd say.
Update: We just noticed a small but freaky 3.98-inch UHD LCD with a world's best 394ppi density. Amazing.

I agree, 3D glasses still don't look sexy.
@Officer John117 It's a shame they have to cover every viewing angle to be effective it makes it virtually impossible for them to look sleek and sexy.
@Officer John117
but those women do.
first HDTV that can display 720p/1080p without interpolation
@Officer John117
So, let me get this straight. We'll sit around in beer stained, wife-beater vests and boxers, slouched on the couch munching Cheetos, but there's no way we're going to make ourselves look goofy by wearing 3D glasses. That makes a lot of sense.
I don't get what the big issue about the glasses is. A significant proportion of the population wear glasses anyway, so why is it such an imposition for people?
@beefiron If you wear glasses to begin with then it's a pretty big deal to have to put another pair over your own. You may not care how doofy you look in your own home, but the lack of comfort is another thing altogether.
@TheBennettBrigade
The point he's making is that people are complaining about
"having to wear glasses"
when a significant portion of OTHER people do anyway, it's no issue for them.
Glasses wearing people don't sit in front of the TV bitching about how uncomfortable it is to be watching TV and have to wear these "God damn glasses!"
So why should everyone else?
@Officer John117 I should have to wear glasses to watch TV if I don't have a vision problem.
@SolidSnake eww...
@SolidSnake
Whatever rocks your boat...
@Officer John117 Everything about LG is really BIG. http://j.mp/lg-biggest-lcd-in-the-world
@Officer John117
I want this as my desktop monitor..... minus the 3D bullshit.
IPS technology was invented by Hitachi Japan .........
@XRX
Cool story bro.
LG Display busts out double Ds.
@cdf74dc9 : 2D's > 3D
@cdf74dc9
is there a triple d? or is that an e?
they're looking at us with 3D glasses while we look at the screen without them
It's needs those stupid glasses.... fail.
O all that 3D hype...
I see no point in 3D TVs.
@Moze
Yea, people that walk in your house are like "is that TV broken? Why is it so blurry?"
Haven't you heard? Blurry TV is the new trend. Replied Steve.
Sorry, the boobs are not 3D enough, kinda 2D for me. :P
"we want the 2D version".
You mean you the writer of this story wants it in 2D?
@Axtor
Here here!
Whats his point anyway?!
It's not like a 3DTV won't display 2D source/content...
And 3D's here like it or not, you don't have to use it, but a high-end new even higher resolution TV is going to include that new feature everyones talking about.
It's just something else on the feature list, I wish everyone would quit bitching, and quit honing in on the 3D. The news here is the UHD resolution, not that it does 3D.
3D has just as much right to be mentioned as the contrast ratio, say. In a full spec of the TV.
Now that's big 3DTV but would only get the projectors when thet implement glasses-free 3D experience!
Hot girls in post means >80 comments by horny nerds.
@aforty
Where are the hot girls?
@JXCGunrunna
HOT GIRLS!??!
Those girls are hawt, even if they wear those awesome hightech 3D glasses.

84 inches sounds great, and the increased resolution IS great, but how many people actually have room for an 84" TV? At that size, you're pretty much dedicating an entire wall of your room to the TV. And who really cares about 3D? I've still got no idea why the industry is so hot on something so few people actually want.
@Magicland Hype sells, they make you believe you want and need it.
2D version? Simple, just close one eye.
I want those 2 dames myself.
You all realize that you can just use any 3D TV in plain old 2D mode by hitting a button or changing a setting?
@Willen
Yup, 3D TV's can do 2D content and I believe many can do 3D content in 2D.
Eventually 3D will just be a built-in option on TV sets, I don't see why everyone has to boycott it and hate it so much, it's an optional extra and will be as so on future sets.
WANT!!!!
Not the TV ... :P~
2160p for the win. 3D not so much.
Well, you have the 2D version of those shapeless girls for now so at least have that as consolation.
I'm sorry, was that rude?
Sorry, but once you get past, say 65 inches, you might as well get a projector. A bigger TV than that is pretty unwieldy, regardless of weight and you are pretty much going for the home cinema crowd at that size anyway. I guarantee you, setting up a front projector and screen and some good windows shades is going to be easier and cheaper than setting up an 84 inch TV set. And yes, I know this isn't really meant for the home, but even in a bar a projector just makes way more sense.
Argghhh, that's Quad-HD, not Ultra-HD.
Quad-HD is 3840x2160p (4x Full-HD).
Ultra-HD is 7680x4320p (4x Quad-HD).
I want the girl on the right
Does anyone have more detail about the 32" pro hd monitor? Is the first new large format computer monitor? The 30" monitor market has been stale for 2+ years.
Not another waste of money please... Full HD is still growing
