Samsung Galaxy S will hit Asia in June, get Froyo later
Samsung has just let the cat out of the bag regarding its top of the line Galaxy S, which is set to make its global debut in Asian markets this June. Unsubsidized, this 4-inch beastie will cost you S$1,098 (or around $775), which might be a little on the steep side, but then this is one of only a pair of Super AMOLED handsets on the market and Samsung makes the other one. And in case you want an alternative closer to home, Amazon's German portal is now listing the Galaxy S for pre-order at €649, which works out to about the same price. The best news from today, however, is probably Samsung's official confirmation that the phone will be getting an Android 2.2 upgrade at some point in its future. No specifics are given as yet, but we'll take our Froyo whenever and wherever we can get it.

Bring on the super amoled!
@XChrisX Bring on the Pro! What happened to the Pro with keyboard :(
@Schmich No clue, but I'm so used to using soft keys that it would just be weird going back to a real keyboard. This is considering I came from a sidekick to the first induction of the fruit phone.
@Schmich Pro's release date is sometime in August, and from what I undrstand, Sprint is getting it here in the US. Not sure of non US carriers on the Pro.

$1100 unsubbed? Errnt. Keeping the Nexus One.
@Level 5
That made me choke... With that price or not, EVO is still better when compared spec by spec/feature by feature. Even the Dell Lightning looks more kicking.
@Level 5
good idea samsung phones wont get updates im tellin ya samsung has said that before with the behold to promised updates the said they wont support it
@Level 5 Please note, those are 1,100 Singapore Dollars.
@thugjedi91 yeah look at us i8910 users
That's still about $800. Considering my phone was unsubbed at $550, that's a substantial difference.
@Vlad Savov
a rough conversion
1,100.00 SGD = 782.172 USD
without taking tax/conversion considerations that still is pretty much...
@commenter7
uh just realized, engad already posted a conversion....
@MegaJapan Not with the GPU and screen this thing has.
@MegaJapan actually, this processor has wayyyy more 3d performance than qualcomm snapdragon.
@MegaJapan
Yes this has a better GPU and possibly a better processor.
@xavierpr14
Advantages of EVO:
4.3" > 4"
HDMI Out
Mobile Hotspot
HTC Sense >>> TouchWiz
8MP Camera > 5MP Camera
4G (when applicable)
Kickstand?
Advantages of Galaxy S:
Super AMOLED > TFT
Lighter weight?
...Did I miss something?
@MegaJapan
Yeah only the biggest thing!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/samsungs-galaxy-s-has-four-times-the-polygon-power-of-snapdrago/
@fais
Of course. And I also missed how EVO has dual LED flash while Galaxy S has none... Can we also compare value?
@MegaJapan Sorry buddy. The EVO is close at second. But this phone's Super AMOLED 4" compared to the EVO's 4.3" TFT/LVD makes it a lot better. Don't underestimate the importance of a display, which is basically what you look at all time time.
Add to that small things like the Divx/Xvid support...etc.
@commenter7
Talking about taxes.... I don't think the US price will be as high as $775.
I didn't find an example for Samsung price policy but if it's similar to Nokia's then the german price tag with €649 (that's including VAT) should be almost exactly the same as a US price tag without VAT. So about $650!
Does that look a bit better to you?
@MegaJapan
Well we can only compare value when both phones are priced in the same country. For all you know the EVO could be priced at €649 if it were to come out in Europe.
@MegaJapan
yes you miss the most important aspect of any mobile computing these days, the processor and GPU. Samsung's Hummingbird + PowerVR SGX540 is meant to thrash any Snapdragons in existence, yes dear, including your EVO.
However, Samsung's software will dissapoint its hardware siblings, sad but true.
@TareG
And you're underestimating the importance of the software, where TouchWiz is among the ugliest UI's I've ever tried. Good luck taking pictures in the dark.
@MegaJapan BTW evo is nexus one with bigger screen -.-. This is something totally different, super amoled makes a difference, this can wireless sync to samsung TV.
@rescawen
I don't mind discussing this all day but, saying EVO is N1 with bigger screen is just, well, ignorant... No offense.
@MegaJapan Kaboosh. Despite all the nice features and HDMI, the super AMOLED screen is something great out of the ordinary, that no other phones have except for Samsung.
@MegaJapan
This is all a bit strange Android fanboys vs Android fanboys? Talk about fragmentation.
@Billy
You mean except for "Samsung's", as Samsung is not a phone but a manufacturer that makes them...
@fais:
Can I be considered an Android fanboy when I'm still loving my WinMo phone?
@MegaJapan TouchWiz is great for people like my mother, and this is the best -easiest- Android phone I would recommend her.
As for people like you and me, ever heard of rooting and flashing? I'd do that as soon as Cyanogen blesses me with a Froyo-based ROM that has the Galaxy S goodies inside (like that divx/xvid support).
@annoynimous
Well the Samsung-Intrinsity Hummingbird might be on top now, but the competition is hard in a few months some one else is on top.
Qualcomm with their Snapdragon might have an advantage as they can do more in-house, with their acquisition of AMD Handheld Graphics and Multimedia Assets in 2009 and their custom ARMv7 Scorpion CPU core used in the Snapdragon SoC. New faster Snapdragons are on their way like the 1.3 GHz and a dual core at 1.5 GHz.
I think they are both good designs.
@TareG
So you would recommend a super high-end smartphone to your mom? Somehow I doubt that she would even get to use half the features on it, but let's move on.
There's no guarantee that this device is even "root-able". There's still some Android devices out there that hackers haven't been able to root. While we already know the EVO got that on record time.
@MegaJapan
EVO's 8MP with FLASH >> 5MP NO flash
@MegaJapan
"Advantages of EVO:
4.3" > 4" "
This is only an advantage if you want a huge screen. Personally the EVO is pushing too big for me.
"HDMI Out"
who really plays HDMI video out on their phone? I mean really. This is a luxury at best, not a needed feature.
"Mobile Hotspot"
Froyo has this built in and it's still to be determined if other carriers will allow it.
"HTC Sense >>> TouchWiz"
Clearly this is nice, but it also slows the update releases and locks you into HTC's timeline. Again, preference, not a clear advantage. Although I do like Sense.
"8MP Camera > 5MP Camera"
Anyone with a photographic background knows that more MPs doesn't mean better pics. What it most certainly means is worse low light performance, as you try to cram more and more pixels onto a tiny sensor. It's an advertising gimmick that has existed for years in the subcompact world, and it's worse in cell phone due to their even smaller sensor sizes.
"4G (when applicable)"
When Applicable and no VOIP
"Kickstand?"
Please!!!, something to break off. There are after market cases that have this feature, and since most people put some type of case on their device it make more sense to be on the case.
"Advantages of Galaxy S:
Super AMOLED > TFT
Lighter weight?"
All true, and incredibly important to usability as a carry everywhere device. + the processor GPU combo is better.
@69camaroSS
"This is only an advantage if you want a huge screen. Personally the EVO is pushing too big for me."
Comparing EVO and Galaxy S size by size, there's barely a noticeable difference. The EVO 4G may be a little thicker and wider, but the Galaxy S is also slightly taller. If we say that they're about the same size, I'll take the one with the bigger screen.
"who really plays HDMI video out on their phone? I mean really. This is a luxury at best, not a needed feature."
If you record a 720p video on your phone, and you have the HDMI cable at hand, wouldn't you like to quickly view on your HDTV? I'd take that rather than transferring the video elsewhere, specially if I'm, say, at a friend's house.
"Froyo has this built in and it's still to be determined if other carriers will allow it."
You do know that just because the software supports it, doesn't mean all hardware will, right? In other words, not all Froyo phones will be able to be used as a WiFi hotspot. There's no saying if Galaxy S will, yet.
"Clearly this is nice, but it also slows the update releases and locks you into HTC's timeline. Again, preference, not a clear advantage. Although I do like Sense."
Just like Samsung also delays their firmware updates? Yeah, I get you.
"Anyone with a photographic background knows that more MPs doesn't mean better pics. What it most certainly means is worse low light performance, as you try to cram more and more pixels onto a tiny sensor. It's an advertising gimmick that has existed for years in the subcompact world, and it's worse in cell phone due to their even smaller sensor sizes."
And anyone with a photographic background also knows that the more pixels, the easier it is for editing in programs like Photoshop. I understand perfectly that more megapixels doesn't necessarily always make it better, but also let's not forget the fact that Galaxy S is also lacking LED flash to take pictures in darker areas.
"When Applicable and no VOIP"
Which is an important selling point here in the US, specially if available in your city or soon to be (will be in my city this year), and I personally wouldn't be passing up that chance.
"Please!!!, something to break off. There are after market cases that have this feature, and since most people put some type of case on their device it make more sense to be on the case."
Being able to do it with a case, or being able to do it without a case... I see an easy choice. I don't have a skin-case for my phone, just my belt pouch, so this would be perfect for me when watching videos on it and whatnot at an office. But it's an extra, hence why I put the question mark on it.
"All true, and incredibly important to usability as a carry everywhere device. + the processor GPU combo is better."
At the cost of features already mentioned. Yes, it's faster, but it doesn't exactly make Snapdragon look like a Pentium 4 compared to your Core i7.
@Level 5
How about you read more careful buddy. Its not $1100.
@MegaJapan
Yes, you miss the 8/16GB Internal Memory plus the MicroSD addon...
@mbsb0812
Yes, I forgot that. Though I find that to be of very little importance, probably on the same level as the kickstand, since high capacity microSD are found so cheap nowadays... 1Gb of internal rom is just fine for me.
And I'm still looking at that very high price tag of $775...
@MegaJapan
Advantage Galasy S
Bluetooth 3.0
Hummingbird >> Snapdragon
DLNA (WIRELESS) TV out
Deep integration with Samsung TVs using allshare
Thinner and lighter (fits better in hand when holding it) I've held both.
Battery life
Ability to use the screen outdoors with less sun reflecting
Froyo upgrade coming
World phone (GSM) you can unlock the phone and use it anywhere in the world
@MegaJapan
Display size is not everything. You should looked at their spec too. This is more like personal preference. if i have to choose between 40' LED TV vs 43"LCD TV, I would go with 40"LED TV.
HDMI Out is pretty good. However, Galaxy S is DLNA certified. That means you can also look your stuff through huge DLNA TV(Recently most mainstream HDTV has it).
Mobile Hotspot is additional $30 service and Proyo's feature. No point to talk about it.
HTC Sense is good. Agree
8MP does not mean it is better than 5MP all the time. You have to compare actual output. I think someone already made good point.
4G....How about HSPA+ with Galaxy S(T-mobile)?
Kickstand is good but not required.
Anyway Galaxy S and EVO are great phone.
@MegaJapan
Jesus Fucking Christ, MegaJapan, we get it.
We get that you don't care about the size difference.
We get that you would use HDMI if your phone had it.
We get that you don't understand how WIFI hardware works and that you actually think any of the current WIFI b/g/n radios used in phones could be incapable of ad-hoc connections (ugh, what a fail).
We get that you are intolerant of other UIs, especially ones that you are forced to use (oh wait...).
We get that you REALLY HAVE NO IDEA what you're talking about when it comes to photography, especially hardware and post-production.
We get that you would compare the entire family of mobile standards (3G) to a single specification that lies within said family (WiMax 802.16e IS NOT 4G, only the m-spec is), AND that you automatically assume 3G is slower than 4G, even though the specifications don't imply either (only max theoretical bandwidth, not carrier implementation).
We get that when you can't refute a valid point, like truly objective technical specifications, you marginalize it.
Enough trolling. You're as bad as thatlondonstockexchange douche, who is so insecure that he will post about the iPhone in EVERY post in the hopes that people will support his decision (again, because he is so insecure). No one cares that you like the EVO more than the Galaxy S, in the same way that no one cares about that teabag-lover's adoration for a product to compensate for his inadequacies. If you don't have anything constructive to add to this thread, STFU.
@SeeKo hell no thats not better, im not asking for it to be free but damn $700+ is very steep even $650, that right there is my all my bills in one month minus the rent, but any who if i'm going to dish out that much money samsung REALLY need to prove to me that are going to support their android handsets, look what they forgot with the behold 2 its a sad state that the behold owners are still on cupcake which is very stale now.
@MegaJapan Samsung Galaxy S will be able to share HD content wirelessly, no need for HDMI out. Also, BT 3.0 and wireless N. You mentioned lighter, but not thinner. This will be the thinnest smartphone to have a touch screen on the market @9.9mm.
@MegaJapan Why the hell would an 8mp camera be better than a 5mp one? Isn't this a tech blog? Shouldn't we all know this by now. In my experience, more MP == crappier photos.
@MegaJapan Personally I dont know about Touchwiz as I use a Moment. But why would you need to take pics in the dark? Also from a leaked picture Ive seen of the back of the Galaxy S Pro, right under the camera lens is a led flash. And im willing to wager that the price with 2yr will be between $249 and $299.
dunno what it is but i find samsung phones very boring... =s
@nicholasphan I think this is more exciting than pretty much any other phone that's on or will be on the market.
@revoltracers
You won't be thinking that once you cash out the $775 and spend a few days using TouchWiz ^_^.
@MegaJapan
yeah and the three months later when samsung move on and stop supporting your phone you'll be up in arms
@nicholasphan
I agree that Samsung phone's design is boring. They are more like Business man style....They are boring but anybody can accept it.
@MegaJapan All reports I've read that says it one way or another, you can turn off Touchwizz in the settings. People don't like any of the skins much, besides Sense, but that's still love/hate. If I'm right, you need to get over it.
