MeeGo 1.0 demoed on MSI netbook, looks shockingly stupendous (video)
You've already watched pre-release versions of MeeGo fly around on a number of netbooks, but if you're still wondering if it's worth your while to install v1.0 on your own machine, you owe it to yourself to have a look at the video posted after the break. The fine folks over at Liliputing have installed the fresh-out-of-the-lab operating system onto their MSI netbook in order to showcase some of the features, and frankly, we're duly impressed by what we're seeing. It's clearly light on its feet, with an Expose-like shifting of screens happening at speeds which we previously only dreamed of seeing on an Atom-based rig. We can't say the rest of the world is really ready to ditch Windows 7 for something as niche as this, but judging by this vid, you should probably give it a whirl. What's to lose, right?
P.S. - Phoronix was able to run the new OS through the benchmark gauntlet, and it certainly showed up Ubuntu.
[Thanks, Rafael]

i've tried it today and i think it need more software support ....
couldn't sync with my google calendar ...
From the looks of it, MeeGo seems to borrow far more from the aesthetics of Moblin than it does of Maemo. Personally, I think the tabbed interface; seems quite appropriate for a smallish screen. I'm actually quite impressed and surprised by how snappy it is for a version 1.0 product that was only announced so recently (MWC if I recall correctly, but maybe I'm mistaken - will need to check).
If they cut out some of the chrome and really polish up the UI to make some standard Linux apps look a little more uniform to gel better with the OS, then I'd really start to consider installing it on a spare machine to try it out. Or, ideally, I hope they get a nice developer community around it to push some lightweight, snappy apps - if this had a really slickly skinned version of AbiWord, a decent XHTML editor, a classy looking media organiser and a few of the other things necessary to give it a well-rounded cohesive feel, then I think it might start gaining some traction.
Am excited to see how this develops over the coming months.
Why would i want a PC o/s without a catalog of standard software?
no good office apps ... Open office and google docs are jokes.
back to your mom's basement MeeGo with the rest of the Linux users.
Downloaded it, got it on a flash drive, booted it on my HP Mini 210, and it sucked ass.
Firstly the wireless didn't work (it's broadcom so I can forgive MeeGo for that) and connected to the wired lan.
So opened Chromium, went to meego.com (the home page)... 'Page could not be found'.
Went to google.com... 'Page could not be found'
Went to bing.com... Bing loaded... huh :/
Went to the mozilla website... that worked too... wtf?
I went to google and meego.com on my desktop and the loaded fine.
Next I attempted to follow the tutorial on slaine.org to get the wireless, and got stuck because MeeGo couldn't access the repository on meego.com. FFFUUUUUUUUU!!!!
The somehow I managed to get Firefox on it, and still couldn't access meego.com either.
I tried rebooting, installing to HDD, using a usb wifi adaptor, using a different flash drive, and still no dice.
So maybe SOMEHOW MeeGo blocked it's own website. What the fuck MeeGo?
Windows 7 or Ubuntu Netbook Remix might take more time to load, but at least it works.
@cookiebits Seems to me there's just something wrong with your connection. Worked just fine with men.
Keeping in mind this is the first release I have to say Iwas positively surprised how well the whole thing worked. Very snappy.
I was also impressd how well Flash worked. Youtube hasn't worked that well on any other OS with the good olde EEE 901.
@goad Yeah, you're right. I tried again today and it's runny sweet!
It's a bit faster than UNR and speedier than Windows 7, but more netbook friendly. And I do like the improvements they've made on top of Moblin 2.1.
Sometimes linux just makes me RAGE! I think it's the fact that there's no simple way to install/configure propriety drivers... stupid synaptics and broadcom...
is there proper GMA500 support? it booted on my fujitsu u820 but stalled at character console and couldn't start graphics
I can boot the older release candidate IVI variant but the installer is buggy and it doesn't load gma500 aka poulsobo drivers
bad Intel, bad!!
Tried it with USB stick on my Toshiba NB200 , it is surprisingly good, boots in 15 secs, everything worked except for bluetooth, which never worked with any linux distro, I know theres a workaround somewhere.
Totally cool, they need to add more apps to their app store "garage", which can be easily done. Someone commented google calender sync dint work, but it worked for me. Nice to see evolution neatly integrated. This will take the crown as far as netbooks concerned in due course of time..
BTW will it ever support AMD athlon neo , coz its in some netbooks ??
As long as it is penguin ( read: Linux) flavor, there are a huge quality freeware apps for us to consume, mean you don't need to pay the apps, normally donation to support the apps development.
At the end of the day, we are less poor, freeware, got it?
