Nokia N8 gets first official carrier in Vodafone UK
Expect this to be the first of many similar announcements as Nokia works out carrier agreements for its new flagship phone. Vodafone's always informative Coming Soon page has today been updated with the N8, touting its "incredible" camera, social features, and personalization options. Nothing resoundingly new or informative then, but at least you'll know where to look come late August.

WIN!
Now to see what I can negotiate off them as a premium customer...
@MarkAnderson This will sell amazingly well, I just want Nokia to make a GOOD smart phone so that people don't get the wrong idea about touch screen devices. I see so many people using the 5800 and I wonder if they think this is how far mobiles have come along? Such a crappy s60 user interface and a horrible screen. Good lord.
@Spaldinggreat
I have a 5800. It's a good phone - never had a problem with the UI aside from some slight irritations (double taps, network messages, etc) plus it's one of the best mobile music players ever made.
@MarkAnderson I agree. (Two) good speakers and a front-facing camera for video skype. Yesterday I video skyped from the handset while away from my pc. Brilliant! Cheap as chips, 5800 contracts. 16:9 good screen shape for video, compact for the pocket.
@MarkAnderson Not wishing to start a flame but I did use it for 4 months whilst I had no other option and I found it so laggy, awkward, unintuitive and just so poorly designed. I mean really, I shouldn't have to press 3 or 4 times just to get things to work.
@Spaldinggreat
Fair play. I can understand some of your frustrations.
orange please
@keanu096 Orange you glad it's coming on Verizon
@Cynical Hippie Orange I glad it can be used on any GSM network :D
Too much talk about a phone that won't be released for at least 3 months. It would have been wiser to just drop it on the public like Moto did with the Droid- THAT was something.
With 3 months of speculation and leeks it's bound to be "old" once it's available.
@Geozec
Nope, they will have lots of new stuff to announce when it comes out, mainly on the content side. Think EA games, Web TV, etc.
@Geozec
Like the iPhone 3GS was?
Sorry, no.
@Geozec
I have to agree, never understood Nokia and its 6+ months in advance announcements
@nk
Well at the moment they have to anounce something or investors get crazy, I get that. But it's a shame anyway.
@Geozec Yup, Nokia have a habit of pre-announcing their hot phones way too far in advance. So much so, with all the hype, when the device actually hits the shelves - like the N97, there is either disappointment or as you say, a feeling of too little too late. By August, there will be an iPhone 'HD' and a slew of new Android phones. If the N8 was due to be out at the same time as the new iPhone, and the latter fails to deliver, the N8 would be worth considering along with the HTC Desire. The N8 camera really is awesome assuming the demo shots are genuine.
@Geozec well they have every reason to. If I was a big shareholder I would to
@nk
I haven't understood the 6 month prerelease announcements either but this time they were forced by the leaks. I think they would have waited at least until june before announcing this phone, probably even later.
@newone
LOL "leaks"?
If they wanted to keep this secret they would have.
Given Nokia's recent "successes" they HAD to anounce something, that's why.
@newone
How is May to August 6 months? And hasn't the iPhone HD been rumored long before the N8? GTFO...
@christexaport ok in N8 case it wasnt 6 months, but look some other nokia phones
Well, so far so good. At least the carriers think it is good enough. Getting my N900 was a total bitch!
Vodafone's got some pretty good phones now. This, the desire and the galaxy s. My contracts up soon and I've no idea what to go for. They've all got their merits
Had a nokia last year, but ultimately ditched it as Symbian was still a joke since my last nokia.
Can anybody tell me... will this "new" Symbian offer a REAL, capable email client? The offerings available in S60 were so bad.
Thanks!
@pilot145
Err... Nokia Messaging's been out for a while, chief.
@MarkAnderson
Yes I am aware of Nokia Messenger, and it didn't ever work properly on my last Nokia device! Very buggy, and not feature-comparible to iPhone or anything else for that matter. Tried Profimail, and the regular "email" app that came with the E71.
Specifically I want to know before wasting my money on an unlocked Nokia again that it will have a solid email client. I travel around the world and use email constantly.
Thanks.
@pilot145 Nokia Messaging requires me to give my access details to Nokia. Due to my work and confidential data I manage, this is not an option for me. I want a proper email client which directly access the mail servers of my company.
@pilot145
It is a completely reworked Email client in S^3. Works like a charm according to testers. Though, I have to say, I have never had any issues with the mail client on the E series devices I have had. Are you looking for Exchange support?
@chabba
How is that different from what Blackberry devices require you to do?
@JFH
Thanks for you info! I will only be using a gmail address, but not exchange support. The whole clunkiness/poor design of S60 turned me off big time. I have searched for screen shots or video of this new email client but can't find any.
I am really interested in this phone for the camera too, but good solid email capability might sell me as it has 5 bands of GSM which is pretty neat.
@chabba
Nokia Messaging isn't recommended for corporate email servers yet. MfE is the recommended solution. You have to use the right tool for the job.
@christexaport of course, we use MfE. However, the email client of my E series phone cannot handle HTML emails, etc, so albeit this solution is somewhat secure, it is definitely not comprehensive.
Why does Vodafone get everything?
@commenter7 cause they're awesome like that
would be fun to see if the n8 can be hacked to run android 2.2 :)
anyway, it makes a change from o2 getting yet another exclusive, then their network still isn't up to scratch to deal with even the first gen iphones.
@Wiggy Fuzz
lol why would you want to downgrade an OS?
What I really like is how good the N8 feels when you hold it - I have never seen such a feeling after the iPhone launched. Apple makes hardware which feels good to hold (admit it: most people like to fondle pretty, smooth, curvy things, both living and non-living ;-) ) and it seems in this case Nokia also followed the lesson. Now please launch the darn phone and dont screw up the software! Ofcourse going by my 1st impressions of their proto software, they are well on their way not to.
That is such a nice phone. Not giving up my N900, but I hope the next MeeGo device will have camera close to this.
@Engadget
hmm, my earlier post was deleted...Very mature.
Once again, it's not flagship. Do you not read from Nokia's press release? Find me one reference that says otherwise please.
Dear Nokia,
Please bring this to AT&T. Ralph says he'll love you forever.
Thanks,
We Need Better Shit
@Sliderocket21
Ralph/AT&T will completely screw over the N8 just like they did to the Motorola Backflip.
$30 enforced data plan
Tethering? either gone or optional for an extra $30
Ovi Store? replaced with AT&T store
12MP photos? shrunk to 2MP when you upload it over the air
No thanks to any of that
Question about UK Voda users:
hows the 3G speed of voda compare to tmobile and o2??
Ive tried o2 iphone 3g and feels like its slower than my web n walk tmo N900.
@Raffstyle
Better than O2 speed wise (afaik, I was on O2 for the iPhone 3G, switched since), same as O2 for coverage (or so).
Much better coverage than T-Mo in terms of getting a signal in a building. Speed-wise, I'm not so sure.
Anyone know if this will be available on Vodafone Ireland?
