iPhone 4G display put under a microscope, 960 x 640 a lock?
You've seen it in San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that's what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker's call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS -- making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair -- while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You'll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days' time.

I want one.
@jjrp123 Can't wait either. This will blow all android copycats out of the water.
@jjrp123
And we can all be sure that Paul would love to have one, too...
Check out that pixel density...whoa...
@jjrp123 not a fanboy but if this is true I agree. I'm a sucker for high-res, high quality displays.
@jjrp123
i really want to see what it looks like in comparison though... the source links don't seem to work. maybe they're not used to the traffic?
FINALLY they have something before anyone else. And it only took 3 years! Nice job, Apple.
@sweet greggo
And if having something first were the only thing that mattered, we would all be driving Ford Model Ts. LOGIC FAIL.
@jjrp123
What do you do with that kind of pixel density. Watch it with a microscope?
@jjrp123
I'll pass on this and take the Super Amoled Galaxy S from Samsung instead!
@jjrp123 Now all we need is the new macbook air to have a touchscreen and an app store..
@safe travels
Mirror, with original images, here: http://appleguru.org/iphone4grez/
@huzzlehoff PPI = 330 ish. Insane
@jjrp123. ppi = 330 ish. Insane
@iamlilysdad dont get me wrong, but if its still lcd then this thing is not so great, everyone is moving to oleds and I think that its time Apple do the same
@bjjones you actually want a samsung i feel so sorry for you
@Jack
Ford model T wasn't first... not even close
@jjrp123
What's up with the ODD pixel ratio? 16:10.67? Other than that, increased pixel density gives all devices more hope for the future! :-)
HTC better hurry and increase their pixel density before Apple patents it.
@Edobe
But the question is, so what?
@Jack
The Ford Ts were the most popular car for a number of years until competition came along. What's your point?
@huzzlehoff Higher pixel densities are great, my Bold 9000 has a 2.6" screen running at 480 x 320, it looks great. Everything is smooth. It almost makes up for the sluggish applications and the web browser that takes 45 seconds to render pages!
One important thing to note is while it's a 4th generation iPhone it's probably not an iPhone 4G like the 2nd generation iPhone is an iPhone 3G, 3G referring to the att's network its running on. As at&t doesn't have a 4G network and probably wont until at least next year (what will probably be an LTE network) it will probably be a 3G phone (called the HD i'm betting). What I don't understand is why virtually every tech site and news outlet continues to call it the iPhone 4G despite this misnomer (seeing that their is no reason to believe it is a 4G phone, even the CDMA chips that are supposedly being developed for other networks are based on 3G technology and not 4G.
@prestochango
4G as in it's the 4th generation iPhone.
-iPhone = 1G
-iPhone 3G= 2G
-iPhone 3GS = 3G
-iPhone ??? = 4G
Seeing as how we don't have a name for it yet, most are just calling it the "iPhone 4G" because it is the 4th generation device. Just like how we call the latest iPod Touch the "iPod Touch 3G" even though it has nothing to do with 3G cellular connections.
@nk
I'm sure they will once some of the problems with OLED are worked out such as screen burn-in, longevity, and color accuracy. AMOLED fixed most of the outdoor viewing issues which is kind of important for a phone (much more so than a laptop or tablet IMO) but Samsung can't produce them in high enough volume for Apple yet and some of the other issues remain. I'd guess by the 5th or 6th gen they will be using OLED.
@TechNick they should just go fast and furious with it and just call it iPhone... no more numbers tacked onto it, but they probably shouldnt call it the iPhone 4g due to the legal implications that might bring with it...
People associate 4g with the network and this would be seen as misleading consumers who dont know about tech like us
@TechNick It just annoys me because I know calling it the iPhone 4G misleads a lot of people into thinking it has 4G speeds that sprint and now verizon boasts having (even though they're 4G networks are still being developed )
@SteveyAyo
Yeah I doubt they will call it the 4G. I have a strong feeling that if anything, they will call it the "iPhone HD". 1280x720 video recording was added as an option in the 4.0 beta. So between 720p video recording, and the extremely high resolution screen for this size, I think the iPhone HD title seems like a good fit.
@prestochango
Another Apple Hater bitching about "4G"...what else is new?
Anyways I can't wait for the iPhone 4G. I just wish it would have a bigger screen.
I'm starting to think though that I may just wait for 2011 before I upgrade. My 3GS is awesome as is. And while I love that high resolution I'm hesitant to get it if they will keep the screen the same size.
Cuz chances are they'll make it bigger in 2011..which is when I'd be due for an upgrade.
But its still a 3.5" screen (actually I thought I read that it's *slightly* smaller). And don't give me the crap about "no one wants a bigger phone" because the EVO and other phones with larger screens than the iPhone accomplish it without making the device much bigger.
@TheRogueFFAngel
I kinda doubt this. That screen on the leaks doesn't seem to be able to handle that kind of resolution unless it was four inches plus. I wouldn't ve surprised if it was the same or at least wvga.
@nk Sure just don't try to look at one in the sunlight, the amoled that is.
@prestochango your a fucking genius its not called 4G for the network rather its the 4 generation iphone. We don't need a lesson on the device so buzz off
@prestochango Im pretty sure EVERYBODY knows that here, and engadget, as well. 4G is forth generation, as you have pointed out. Here's a little more info, though.
The only "4G" service out right now or relatively soon is Sprint's WiMax 4G, which gets 10mb down. And, I'd also like to add that 4G is a scam, but you'll find out why right now. Both, T-Mobile and at&t have launched hsdpa 7.2, which, as the name implies, has 7.2mb down speeds. Which means the difference between at&t 3G speeds and Sprint's 4G is 3mb. So, really, it's no big deal at all to call the iPhone, the iPhone 4G, because at&t's 3G network right about reaches the same speed as WiMax. AT&T's real 4G (LTE) will launch next year and it's been reported to double it's current 3G speed. That is something I'd be picky about fixing, not so much, 7.2mb down vs 10mb down. Shit, even T-Mobile said they can boost their 3G network to twice the speed of Sprint's 4G.
@huzzlehoff nice one! If this rumor is from sony , I would tend to believe it, if Apple is only putting a VGA on iPad, why would they make a phone like this? Besides, the iPhone OS 4. 0 is quite disappointing, I am really excited to see if the phone is any special
@huzzlehoff
It will vastly improve the display of text. Printers usually have a resolution of at least 600 DPI.
With today's low-resolution screens we have to choose between pretty but blurry text (Apple's choice) and sharp but misshapen text (Microsoft's choice). Higher resolution will make compromise unnecessary and give us sharp text without deforming it.
@TechNick
Watch Apple call it the "iPhone 4G" just to make those not-so-smart people believe it uses 4G. Hey, you never know what shady stuff might pop up.
@prestochango Te 4g denotes generation of iPhone not generation of network
@TechNick
Yes, everyone seems to agree that "4G" stands for "4th generation", but "generation" on the topic of mobile phones usually refers to the generation of the network technology. Hence the confusion.
1st generation: NMT
2nd generation: GSM
3rd generation: UMTS
4th generation: LTE
@Cold Dead Fingers
Dude at&t and T-Mobile have aweful service. Those speeds are not what you will ever get. Sprints actually covers a decent area and works well with a pretty sweet phone that's coming out. Get over yourself cause it is misleading and moat people don't understand cause they don't research. They just think it is 4g coverage cause 4g. IPhone is old news anyways.
@McKirf
"What's up with the ODD pixel ratio? 16:10.67?"
You mean 3:2. It's not that odd. Apple's first widescreen notebooks (before the widescreen craze) were 3:2, and the iPhone has always been 3:2. It's easy to make on a 4:3 line (just cut it in half), and opinion may vary, but I think the touch of extra width makes the phone more balanced visually.
@huzzlehoff
It doesn't matter what you do with it. It's merely there to shut up the Android fanboys about the iPhone not being as good as some of those half-baked Android-based smartphones with their oversized displays.
@putte Thats why you should call it the iPhone G4. The iPhone 3G was G2 and 3GS was G3. Thats why its really stupid to incorporate marketing buzz terms like '3G' into the name while also using them to refer to the generation of the device.
@TechNick I have a feeling it will be called the iPhone 3G HD (along the lines of iPhone 3G S)
@jjrp123
This WinPho7, or android? Decisions, Decisions.
@TechNick
Why don't we just call it the iPhone HD? Doesn't that fit perfectly?
I'm not sure a pixel density that high really gains you anything. I know that my droid at 854x480 is ridiculously crisp. I don't know if I'd notice any higher pixel density, and the new iphone's screen is just as small as the others.
@TechNick Yep I reckon iPhone HD for the name as well (Y)
@ApocalypseGuppy So you wouldn't want it if you had the choice?
@Oghowie I would need more information to answer that. Does it draw more power? Does it lower the performance? If there are no downsides at all. Same price, same power draw, then sure I'll take a 1920x1200 cellphone whether I can tell the difference or not.
@asfdsad
I stand corrected! However I believe that since 16:9 is pretty much the MODERN standard nowadays, it should be strived for on most devices.
