You've seen it in
San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in
Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that's what they claim. The guys from
superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker's call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like
the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the
iPhone 3GS -- making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair -- while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You'll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at
WWDC in a few days' time.
@MosesusedaniPad
prolly not, it doesn't run on the Nexus without bombing at the basics yet.
@ddddd
And by "the full web" you mean ads? Not sure why you like ads so much.
Wait so if the resolution 960 x 640 how is the rumor of the 1280x720 video recording possible?
@panckakes
A better question is, why you think the camera res and the display screen res must be the same.
Capturing an image and displaying them are two different things. have you ever seen a camera with a screen that matches the image quality?
I don't want to sound bad or anything, but its only got a high pixel density because of its smaller screen size (compared to other phones)
Japanese mobile phones have high resolution AND a decent screen size (see the sharp full touch>>) for AGES
http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/30/softbank-introduces-sharp-aquos-fulltouch-slider-with-quasi-xga/
Sure the pixel density of the Sharp is slightly lower, but the screen is physically larger.
@FC1032 but is all about pixel density and no other phone has more = the sharpest display ever on a phone.
@FC1032
dont be confused - Japaneese count mobile resolution by counting together all 3 colors, so you must divide their numbers by three
Would love to see how this screen holds out against Samsung's Super AMOLED screens :-)
@bahumbaba
While i think S-AMOLED is a great technology, its still not available to anyone other then samsung.
1- Price per unit
2- Production cycle
3- Production yield
Those are 3 VERY big issues that Samsung has to get worked out before we can even start to look at S-AMOLED. Samsung is taking a big hit in cost just to be the first on the market with the technology. In fact Samsung is having a hard time producing enough for there own phones let alone Apple or HTC.
Also S-AMOLED does have some negatives, its not all candy and unicorns. but until price, quality and quantity are in range of LCD, it will be a dead technology to most. i give at least another year until we really see S-AMOLED make any real strides.
@Col Forbin
I don't know allot about the Super AMOLED technology, but besides being expensive and only accessible by Samsung what are the negative points about it?.
From what i've heard it's also have a low power consumption.
@bahumbaba
I think the real problem is that Samsung uses PenTile in its S-AMOLED. PenTile is horrible for text and ultimately degrades the overall image, but increases brightness/contrast and reduces power. What PenTile does is add a white/clear pixel to trick the eye for displaying more color with less information. Ultimately its ok for smaller (qual/pixel) multi colored images, but when solid color smaller text is displayed, your just adding mud to the image. Same when a larger image is displayed, just adds more mud . But its a great way to add brightness and contrast and reduce power consumption. but also increases the size of each pixel, which is showing to have a determination on screen size and ppi.
Dont get me wrong PenTile is a great Tech, but not for a device that does more then display Pics. (great for a small screen point and shoot camera, not so much for an all in 1 device) And the benefits are a great selling point, and not using PenTile AMOLED doesn't show that much promise if your going on specs alone.
I also believe adding the touch input layer directly into the display dramatically increases the initial cost and repair cost, but does make less components and thinner devise. But so far a lower quality touch input devise has been used to reduce the cost which is 3 times the cost of a TFT + input layer. This will change over time
I do think S-AMOLED is a great technology, but i do feel its more of a marketing ploy then devise benefit at this stage. And i do feel the above negatives will be overcome very quickly. thats why i say give it a year before we see any real strides. That and to get production problems under control.
prepare for your eyes to bleed
@tylersmyler
I don't think it's gonna suck that much :D
Glad Apple finally understood that we need a higher res than 480x320. To all of you saying that 800x480 is enough - you have no idea what you are talking about. Been using an HD2 since November last year and I definitely see the pixels when viewing the screen from approx. 30cm away. I'm also pretty sure most of you would be saying the exact opposite if this was a non-apple phone.
While I'd personally still take the Galaxy S over the iPhone 4, the latter has surely gotten much better in my book and once Apple decides to up the screen size to ~4", I'll get one.
Also the A4 should have no issues rendering any current iPhone game at that resolution(as proven by the iPad).
Resolution this high might help me read text sites without zooming in. Its almost possible now but the text is too pixelated.
quadruple the pixels and I am there Apple.
It wasn't superiphone.cz who put it under microscope, but mobilmania.cz. (the most popular czech mobile e-zine
http://iphonemania.mobilmania.cz/iPhone-HD-v-redakci-teste-se-na-fantasticky-displej
superiphone just give the part of iphone to mobilmania
Don't think there'll be any need to be calling it the 4G:

@allthingsapple and in that list of top 5 most popular smartphones youll also see multiple Blackberry devices, so whats your point?
The thing with the iPhone that kills me is the carrier. I have had service with At&t twice for 2 year contracts. In general they suck as a carrier, and then you throw on a data pipe on top of there voice signal. I seriously don't think so.
I am not convinced that the new iPhone will have this resolution. Why would they put a 960 x 640 resolution on a tiny 3.5 screen when the iPad has a much larger screen and have almost the same amount of pixels?
What amuses me is that you could use this slate to activate/sync a iPad lol!
Awesome stuff. Hope the battery life is decent!
a higher screen res would be a plus for the new iPhone, but personally, i hope they do make the screen just a bit bigger. maybe one of the new models can have the new resolution, but the same smaller screen for people that don't want a bigger screen/phone.
So now i have one more excuse to buy the new iphone, i guess
i hate apple but the new i phone is the sexiest phone ever seen
@xdeiri
I know, its pretty frikkin awesome!
I wish it had a big screen, like 4" or something, that would be so amazing.
